Kicking

Kicking has really gone south on us as probably expected.

How do you kickoff two home games with kicks out of bounds? Also, after a good start, we're down near the bottom of the BSC in punting.

Speaking of kicking, I really wish we would go for it on a few more 4th downs. This was an especially big issue for me in the Davis game, but I noticed last night, too. Chalmers was good against MSU, but but I don't trust him outside the 30 at this point.

We need to to bring in a kicking specialist to work mwith and improve his technique.

He seems accurate but not powerful. I too am sick of 45 plus yard field goals. Just go for it, they are getting the ball back at the spot anyway, lets see you get closer and then try a FG.

The Kicking game has been a joke and makes PSU look stupid, especially on the Kickoff team, from the Kicker to the coverage lanes the unit needs improving, it helped to keep Sac State in the game.

Oh, the kickoffs. Makes me want to stay in the tailgate area a bit longer. I'd rather power down a beer or two than watch our kickoffs go out of bounds.

So back to kicking...

Looks like Urrego is the sole owner of kickoff duties now. His kicks looked pretty good as far as distance and getting some odd spin and movement that seemed tough to catch. However, he really gets those things downfield in a hurry and the kick coverage doesn't get a chance to get downfield to stop the kick return from developing. It's better than the kicks going out of bounds, but we're ranked 100th in kick return defense at this point in the season. Not sure if it's our kicking, or just the fact that our kick coverage just stinks.

After this season is over, the coaching staff will have a lot of evaluation to do with the team and the coaching staff!

Better.

That's what comes to mind after the EWU game from the kicking department.

We punted well (avg over 40 per kick with 3 inside the 20) and I think we only put one kickoff out of bounds.

Murphy played better in the SDSU on kick returns, but didn't look good against EWU. Two bad games from him (UCD and EWU) makes me think that they should get someone else some reps in practice.
