Looks like our true freshman quarterback is getting some love. Big Sky Player of the week and National Freshman of the Week. Truly high honors.

Here's the Oregonian link: http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2012/10/vikings_quarterback_kieran_mcd.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anyone else overjoyed we get this kid for next three years? I mean he's good right now, but by his junior year, he may be very scary and among the elite.

Nice. Yeah, it's going to be great to see him over the next few years. Unless you're an opposing linebacker or safety trying to come up and tackle him. That 5th TD he scored on Saturday was great. Just ran right over two linebackers.

Hats off to incoming Freshman Kieran. He has managed to single himself out as the best choice to coaches. His play has been okay and he can only improve. I think his size and strength is a plus. I think the only part of his game in question is his check down and decision making. He seems to tuck it when some big plays are available. I think with his experience in tucking it and running works well in the early part of the game but once the team is behind the windows of opportunity seem to dwindle and this does not equate to a winning program. To make my point more substantial. How do you see this and notice on the roster a "Collin Ramirez" Single Season Touchdown Pass Aaron Rogers record breaker and holder with super impressive numbers across the JC board for passing rating and not scratch your temple. A university is a learning environment. Instruction sometimes is visual. I think Kieran if anyone could benefit from this presence on the field. That's the reason you go to the JUCO pool to get talent. He can lead in situations where a bruiser is best left with a clip board signalling plays. Why run it out of him right now. Is a title out of the question now? Come on... How many teams in the NFL have multi-talented options on the roster. I am not here to say what someone is or isn't but a tandem Passing Running Mix up would throw opposing coaches into orbit. Collin is a 4.5 40 time. I am still scratching in wonder if the kids reps will pan out? I say share the beef and keep the defenses guessing who they are up against. TWO QUARTERBACKS IN ROTATION WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR TWO ON THE FIELD SIMULTANEOUSLY.... How many more losses does it take?

Portland State QB Kieran McDonagh, handing the ball off, accounted for six touchdowns in Portland State's 77-10 victory against the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday.

This is how that disgusting Oregonian newspaper should have portrayed him.

Working off the stats in the three games he played in, Ramirez seems to run as well as Kieran (4 runs average 12 yards). In passing he passes a little less efficiently than Kieran. Kieran, however, has thrown 7 interceptions (though none against ISU) and Ramirez none. I dunno. Ramirez had fantastic numbers in JUCO, but that's JUCO. I admit I didn't understand why Ramirez didn't start. Maybe he was slower picking up the plays. Maybe the coaches just like the way Kieran runs, blasting straight ahead. We do use the pistol, which highlights the running game. As for playing them in tandem, that may be too complicated for this young team.

I think that McDonagh's running in camp helped push him into the top spot.

The problems that the Vikings have had are not because the offense has had trouble scoring from the QB position. I'd be hard pressed to say that we've lost any games because of the QB position, notwithstanding the interceptions.

My thought is that McDonagh has more upside for this team overall. If he was sitting on the bench this year, he'd be essentially at the same spot that he was at the beginning of the year next season, and he'd be burning a year of eligibility next season playing behind Ramirez. As it is we have him for three years after this season is completed and he's going to be very good next year and beyond.

JUCO stats are good to get the message board and fans excited, but once the rubber hits the road, the coaches are going to play the players they feel they have the best chance to succeed with. I am not taking anything away from how hard the 2's and 3's work. It may be news to the Oregonian, but every player on this team is giving their all every game. They all want to play, but there is only so much time available.

Thomas Carter didn't let being low on the QB depth chart stop him. Now he's getting a lot of time in at WR and holder, so maybe Ramirez could learn how to play FB? :)

For this team to be a young team that embraces winning in the future... Is an NFL strategy that gets teams draft picks early in the first round... Can a coach afford to lose 8 this year or more to win 8 down the road... Sounds pretty average... For a few seniors glory while how many seniors are left with a record on their shoulders that is satisfying to a couch surfer who can go watch next year when the winter sets in...What about this team is young? I thought this was Big Sky Conference. Blog sites are overall zealous outspoken people who need to be heard and feel they are "right" so they write... It feels good. Opinion or not its all argue able and what losing says about its fans can be heard here... It's ok, cause that's the big picture? Fans want wins... Blog sites for their teams want wins... Getting in the game when there is less skin in the game doesn't quite constitute numbers... Most people would want a two car garage knowing it had a diesel in one side and a sports car in the other. Which one of these young players couldn't handle it yet excepts losing? Coaches are hired and fired... We have gotten a glimpse of that mid stride? Not something a savvy coach would pull going into Confernece play... I am totally confused by a lopsided victory makes feel like we tried to make up for something when we couldn't find an answer... Then to get squashed in a shoot out... When keying on the quarterbacks run kills his average per carry and wears down confidence and brings the dreaded. I don't have an answer to a loss... Other than a number one and then a number two and then a number 3zzzz.... I am counting losses... Pretty tiring...from my blog post...I say Ram and McD lead some wins... Diversify to save McD face in the long run... Stats could tell another tale of his talent at this pace and I am sure he wouldn't want that either...

I lost my secret decoder ring.

What exactly are you saying?

Hey Marty, I found your secret decoder ring in my box of Cracker Jacks. :D

@Gilbert.points - welcome to the forum, I would like to respond to your coherent post.

Some thoughts on Kieran:
GreenGiant hits it on the head that the QB play isn't the reason we've lost games. With the exception of UW (still was impressive) and maybe NAU, McDonagh and the offense has put this team in position to win. Your concerns about his intermediate passing skills could be valid, but do you see this team run very many of those? His lack of intermediate passes may have to do with the plays being called. Not to mention, he has a new crop of receivers every week due to injuries and line up shuffles. Lack of familiarity means drops, breakdowns in communication, and even interceptions. Let's remember he's only a true freshman. This emphasis on his seven interceptions seem to be silly considering Yost has 7, Denarius has 6, and Sorensen has 8. These are the only three quarterbacks averaging more passing yards a game than him, and I don't think any of them are true freshman.

Thoughts on Collin Ramirez and the QB situation in general:
NO RESPECTABLE PROGRAM HAS DUELING QUARTERBACKS. It keeps the defense guessing, but also it keeps your teammates guessing and stunts the chemistry and trust that develops between a quarterback and the offense/team. The fact of the matter is that the QB position was wide open for PSU coming into the year. They had as many as 6 guys vying for the starting role. If Ramirez is as can't miss as you say, how come he didn't make an impression in spring practices or fall camp? He was given every opportunity to seize the position. I am tired of hearing this "he broke Aaron Rodgers' record at the JUCO level." Cool, but Rodgers went to play at CAL, and Ramirez came to an FCS school. Breaking records at a JUCO doesn't guarantee success at the next level whether it be FCS or FBS and it certainly doesn't mean he's entitled to start or even get playing time (ask Padron at EWU). The coaches play who they think gives the team the best chance to win. We are not there at every practice to see these guys compete. Practice, film, how you prepare… that's where playing time is earned. There's no politics about it, a kid set to greyshirt (McDonagh) came in and earned the spot because the coaches and the team believe he is their best shot win, and I will have to take them at their word because they see everything... I just watch on Saturdays.

PS. Why all this negativity on KM? I thought he won BSC player of the week and national freshman of the week? Seems like a random time to question our QB position.

I give my fair share of credo to KM. I am also speaking from a Collegiate standpoint. No respectable team runs this style offense for very long. I am not negative... I just don't think excusing a loss and firing a coach at the same time is where this team wants to be. This allows complacency and maybe next time. Everyone plays their heart out every game, come fame or not. Every coach does the same come firing or not. I just think and read a little bit between the lines and headlines. Record breaking doesn't come easy otherwise everyone one would break a record like a trip to JC Penney's in search of fall fashion. Nope. We are off to California soon to play some of the kids Collin schooled. What to say he is on the bench. Give him a chance to win and make excuses for losses is why the DC is no longer with the team. I think anytime you allow mediocrity performance on a high level of play and say its neck and neck without declaring the starter in fall practice until a game time decision sounds a little far fetched... Wasn't it neck and neck at the QB position leading into play? Sounds a little soupy. Granted his performance in some situations is a huge impact. I have watched national title teams in the top ten switch QB's repeatedly. Why? Because winning is situational. Look at TCU LSU etc etc. Why does pitching require so many pitchers in a baseball game? Some teams need that "he is our man" "you are the man" kind of leaders while some have too much talent to go to a conventional approach. Plus its "College" more trickery and tom foolery than nearly any other level... Along with a unconventional offense... It seems like a REAL solution... "Hats off again for the fever prose you guys or gals! McD and Ram still my thoughts...

I think as we see Burton's players come more and more into the program, we are seeing he values athletes. Thomas Carter has proven to be an all around athlete; he has made himself a valuable player and a threat any time he's on the field. I agree with your statement, kudo's to him and the coaches for finding a spot to put him on the field.

"No respectable team runs this kind of offense"? We're leading the conference in yards per game. "This kind of offense" must have something to commend it. Actually, if it's a pistol, it's very modified as far as I can see. The only apparent problem is the secondary, and it's improving.

Conference stats:

Scoring offense: 3rd
Total offense: 1st
Rushing offense: 3rd
Passing offense: 6th

Agreed. The problem isn't the offense.

This offense won't work. Hmmmm! Ever heard of tim tebow and the U of Fla. Alleged experts are usually people who have never excelled at anything on their own. time for another drink. :dunce:

Hmmmm! I have heard of Tebow and Florida, have you heard of another? Chris Leak was already established as the starter and had a great career going at Florida. Tebow was used exclusively in run packages as a power runner. Why get into run packages and tip our hand when we don't have to? There was no established, prolific, or incumbent starter, ala Chris Leak at Florida, here at PSU. There was a QB competition where all quarterbacks were given equal snaps, and the coaches went with the quarterback who had the most upside and gave the team the best chance to win. Now we have a kid who is a threat in the red zone as a power runner, and a threat through the air. Heck he's even a receiving threat.

I don't understand give Collin a chance to win talk. You don't magically get inserted into games to be given a chance. Your chances are at practice, and you can't perform at practice, why should you be given a chance? Record breaking or schooling guys that may or may not be playing at Poly and UCD isn't enough, sorry. Stated before, the offense hasn't been the issue and since someone here is obsessed with records, pretty PSU broke the rushing record the last game and had one of the most prolific offensive performances since the Lomax days. I really think our offense will be fine, and the team will get wins if the defense builds on their last performance.

Some elusive writing on your message board. Really eclipsed me with your knowledge and ability to bastardize me, impressive and offensive. Heck I would say you might want to wipe your mouth but, it kind of looks good on you at this point. Elusive in the sense commanding a retort but still shying away from the bottom line and headlines. Savory stats on a down team makes for great and soaring confidence for us all :D But doesn't MAGICALLY CHANGE THE WIN COLUMN NOW DOES IT? Keep winning sunshine, with the rest of them.

Hey my mistake,I misunderstood your post. I thought you were talking about the two quarterback system used at Florida, but re-reading it, I realize you meant the offense that Tebow ran which was the modified pistol. I'd say the pistol worked pretty well for him and even at Nevada with Collin Kaepernick. Nevada.. isn't that where our coach is from :D
