KJZZ?

WILDCAT

KJZZ not doing our home games this year? Weberstatesports.com has all our games on radio and our Home game vs the Bobcats on root sports, but no mention of KJZZ.

From what I understand KJZZ was recently sold by the Larry H Miller group to Sinclair Broadcasting, which I believe is an east coast company... I am assuming that there will be no more Wildcat games on KJZZ in the foreseeable future. I really hope I am wrong but I just don't see it.

Bovee has stressed several times the intention of having the team get on TV, and I totally agree that it is vitally important to growing the Weber State brand.

I have from a credible source (I won't say who) that Weber State was actually paying KJZZ money to broadcast the games, not the other way around. They weren't generating enough revenue from the game broadcasts to even break even so Weber State payed KJZZ to come and broadcast them. Hats off to the KJZZ crew, I thought for the most part they did a great job, especially for just a local channel.

People have argued on the forum that they shouldn't broadcast the games because then people will stay home and not come to the games. That may be true for a few hundred fans every game but it is my opinion that the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to broadcasting games. Big time athletic programs play on TV. Period. The big boys of the big sky play most games on TV (Montana, Montana state, northern Arizona...) I would really like to see Bovee and company strike up a deal with another local network for home game broadcasts.

KMYU would be a great fit. They broadcast high school football games and Real Salt Lake games already... Hopefully Weber can get back on TV. Radio and internet streaming is not good enough.

You are right Geo...Weber was paying KJZZ the right to get on TV. However, it was a great deal, something Bovee couldn't pass up. I applaud him for doing it and was hoping it would happen again. Who knows what will happen in the future. KJZZ might still be an option even if management has changed. It is still a regional station.

What is nice, is that there is still plenty of time. We didn't hear about the contract until after the basketball schedule was released, which was late July. From what I heard about last year, the money was initially to be used to get better teams to the Dee. When that didn't work, or when it wasn't enough, Bovee used it to set up a TV deal.

From what I understood, Weber did make some money back from advertising and were able to get Weber State basketball/football broadcast on HD throughout the Green Jello Region. There are Weber State fans in Cedar, Blanding, Franklin, Nephi, who can't drive to the games. Being on TV gives them the chance to watch their Cats. Also, it helps build the fan base. Maybe, because of the deal, there are some new fans. It would be nice to see, if a new arrangement is made, that some away games could be added (total pipe dream).

Now the question should be...WHAT IS THE CONFERENCE DOING TO GET A TV DEAL? TV Deals aren't what they use to be. C-USA just got their renegotiated. I think they lost something like 7M from the original deal (9.2 to 2.7). The MW's deal is set to expire at the end of this year. There are whispering that that deal will be significantly lower than the original. ESPN, FOX, CBS, ROOT are all cutting back. This cut back might be enough to convince BYU that being independent isn't going to cut it. I know that MW schools will be tightening their belts at the end of the year because their deal will not be what it once was. What does that say for the Sky? Well...not a whole lot, but we are cheaper. That might help the conference get a deal.

Does anyone know if the games will continue to be streamed online this year?

They should still be available on eversport, I haven't heard anything concerning whether or not the Big Sky is changing that.

According to the Big Sky conference Website, it looks like games will be on KJZZ again this year. I'm hoping this is for real, as we've yet to hear any announcement from Weber.

Here is the TV/streaming schedule as best I can tell thus far:

@ Utah State - none (wtf?! doesn't this game get enough interest to at least be on local tv?!)
@ South Dakota - ESPN 3
Sac State - KJZZ
@ UC Davis - eversport.tv
Portland State - KJZZ
Montana State - Root Sports
@ Southern Utah - eversport.tv
@ North Dakota - eversport.tv
Northern Arizona - KJZZ
Cal Poly - KJZZ
@ Idaho State - eversport.tv

Keep your fingers crossed...

I hope this is the case too. However, I find it really weird that KJZZ (I'm sure that we are footing the bill to have our home games broadcast on regional tv) isn't interested in going to Poky or Cedar. Also, it is really weird that the USU vs. Weber game isn't going to be on tv. That might have more to do with the MW than the actual interest level.
