Kris Richardson Leaving Folsom HS to Join Taylor

It's happeningggg. Over - Under (3) of the less recruited Folsom D1 level kids commit to play for the Hornets this year. With about a handful of them coming 2019 and 2020.

Also, is this an Assistant HC position of what's the deal here? D-Coord? Will that be too big of a jump for K.Rich?

According to the article..

"Richardson isn’t the only Folsom coach to join Taylor at Sacramento State. Bobby Fresques and Sam Cole, the team’s offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively, and running back coach Chris Parry will also be headed to Sac State"

Wow. I thought Bobby Fresques was a strong possibility, but I'm a bit surprised Richardson and Cole are coming too. I'm especially surprised at Taylor giving Richardson the title of assistant head coach (I told you he is a line guy). I realize they are good friends, but I thought Taylor would mostly go with more experienced coaches out of the gate. It'll be interesting to see how this all works out. As a Hornets fan, of course I'm hoping for the best.

As laughable as this seems, I wonder if the Hornets have any shot at landing RB Daniyel Ngata next year? I wouldn't think so since the kid has been offered by several big name programs (Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan) but his entire HS staff, including position coach, just landed at Sac State. In all seriousness, though, if Sac State were FBS, I think they might have had a shot at him.

You gotta think the Hornets will land some of the fringe FBS Folsom kids now.

Building a Folsom-style program at Sac State...love it.

Just be forewarned about their reluctance to punt the ball! This is the same staff that would often go for it on 4th and 5 from their own 30. They even did that against superior opponents such as De La Salle. While I'm sure Taylor will adjust that strategy some now that he's coaching FCS .. but still don't be surprised when he does it.

Gotta make this a priority!

Let's slow down a bit here. Fresques is not only a former Hornet QB, he has also been a Hornet WRs coach. Despite what I said about having reservations about Taylor (largely due to the fact that I really have no idea who he is or how good he is), I DO know Fresques, and I LOVE this hire. I could see him taking the QBs OR the WRs and being successful, regardless.

Completely agree regarding Fresques. He has experience coaching under Volek at Sac State and mentoring QB's with Taylor. That’s why I said I thought Taylor would bring him along. I’m just surprised by the other hires and making Richardson asst HC.

Welcome Coach Richardson, Coach Fresque, Coach Cole and Coach Parry to you and your families to Sac State. Great to have you all as Sacramento State hornets!!

Looks like Coach Taylor only retained two coaches from Sears' staff.

Good to see he picked up former NAU DC Andy Thompson. Thompson had left NAU for SUU in December but probably decided he has a better future here.

That's a solid staff. Thompson is a solid get as NAU has been one of the better defensive teams in the BSC.

The RBs (Montgomery) and DL (Plemons) were some of the more consistent and productive units under the previous regime. Taylor retained the admin staff as well.

Let's see if this staff can work any magic in the 11th hour of recruiting season.

Coach Taylor has assembled a top notch staff. I like hiring Andy Thomson away from SUU, as he has had some really good defenses. I am guessing they will put together a really good spring signing class!

I've been following this Andy Thompson thing for a few weeks. Odd to say the least.

Thompson was formally announced as SUU's new DC on 12/13: https://suutbirds.com/news/2018/12/13/football-thunderbirds-tab-andy-thompson-as-defensive-coordinator.aspx

But Coach Taylor told Joe Davidson of the SacBee that he had hired Thompson about 10 days later. And I hadn't seen anything printed about it since -- until last night.

I wonder how Thompson got out of that deal? Regardless, it's nice for a change to see the Hornets program attracting interest from outside coaches. Hopefully the talent follows.

I also really like that Taylor retained James Montgomery and Will Plemons.

It looks like Coach Taylor brought one "coach" (a graduate assistant) from Utah with him, Jeremy LaPan. He's taking over the Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends coaching duties. A California native with experience in the BigSky playing for Montana.
