Larry Kerr named defensive coordinator

I had a feeling this is the guy they're aiming for. He has lots experience, but I'm not sure the game has passed him by. He didn't do very well for CSU while he was there for his second stint.

If anything else I hope he'll bring a calming presence. It seems like maybe some maturity in the coaching staff will be a benefit. Maybe not getting a personal foul after every big play, play with some poise, maturity.... I know I'm asking too much...

The entire coaching staff was very green before at least now there is someone who has seen it all. Something was very dysfunctional last year and I'm thinking that had to be a part of it.

I believe if this next year doesn't go the way it's planned, he will be the next head coach. They will promote from within the coaching staff and give this guy a shot instead of bringing in an outsider.

I'm not sure I understand the excitement about this hire. I don't recall the CSU defense with Kerr as being anything to shout about. In fact, if memory serves, the entire staff was fired when Fairchild was let go. Kerr wasn't kept on because of his stellar defense that helped lead the Rams to all of 7 conference wins over 4 years.

He has gone 6-14 as the head coach of L.A. Valley College over the last 2 years. You really think that's a resume that should excite the fans and the team? Is this really the guy you want to take over if Collins is fired after another season of futility?

This is a very positive move for this team-coaches and players. And we need positive right now. Many of the local players were recruited by Coach Kerr and have allot of respect for him...and can't wait to play for him. His wisdom and experience will also help mature and guide this young coaching staff on how to properly motivate and guide these young men to be a great person, great student and great athlete. I am very encouraged by this hire.

Wow, the hire was just announced and you have already had the time to take the pulse of the players. Very impressive.

I hope you are right and I hope he provides the wisdom and experience you think he will. Personally, I want more than a great person, a great student and a great athlete. I want a great team and I don't see anything in his background that gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling that he is bringing that to the table.

Yes, I know several players and this hire is already a positive buzz. His hiring is bringing POSITIVE encouragement to this team and that is a good thing. This team has had enough negativism from 2013. It is a new year and new day in Bears football. This is a great start to 2014. A POSITIVE attitude is a critical ingredient to being a winner. A NEGATIVE one breeds losers.

I love the sunshine your blowing. I know several players as well and follow several others on twitter. Those I know have never heard of Kerr and I haven't seen anything posted about the hire on twitter by those I follow. I'm curious where the buzz is?

I agree the team needs something positive and they have had way too much negative. This isn't it. For me, as a fan, this hire at best is a big "sigh" and I have a hard time believing a guy with his dismal track record over the last decade is causing any buzz.

So are they just hanging on, waiting for Collins to get fired?

I think PlayerParent has been pretty right on with their comments in other posts.

So your friends have no confidence in their coaches? Why is this? Integrity issues? Lack of discipline? Why is Collins such a bad coach?

Kerr has coached in 13 Bowl games, and has been a defensive coordinator at Northern Arizona, UCLA, and Colorado State.
I'm thinking that having someone come in that has an impressive resume built around football is going to do nothing but help us.
We gotta give the guy a chance.

You are right, he does deserve a chance. But for the sake of argument let's look at his last tour at CSU-

2008- Allowed 410 yards and 30.2 points per game
2009- Allowed 387 yards and 29.8 points per game
2010- Allowed 423 yards and 34.7 points per game
2011- Allowed 413 yards and 31.2 points per game

UNC last year- Allowed 409 yards and 31.2 points per game. Good enough for 1 win over an NAIA school.

He is going to have to do significantly better than what he has done recently if UNC is going to improve.

Agreed. There is way too much negativity on this board towards a guy who has yet to coach a single down at UNC. Give the man a chance. Maybe you'll be surprised 303Bear.

I would in turn say there is way too much blind acceptance of mediocrity on this board. We should want better and have the right to expect better.

Read the CSU boards and see what they think of his tenure there.
