Last Chance U - Watch it NOW!

If you have the time for a bit of binge-watching on Netflix, go home and watch Last Chance U. It is an eye-opening documentary about JUCO football, revolving around East Mississippi Community College. It reminds me that A LOT, maybe most of college athletes are pretty selfish in the way they are brought up. They're given so much in life, and coaches and teachers give them a free ride, but when adversity happens, they quit like a bunch of babies.

The show is 6 or 7 episodes long, but it's worth the time. BTW, I am not saying this young man is selfish by any means, but just doing a little research on a new member of our roster only reminded me of some of these kids from the movie. Here's the kid...

This sounds really interesting but I'm not fully grasping your assertion here, is this guy associated with this Juco program or what is that connection?

No, he isn't associated with the Juco in the movie, but doing a bit of research reminded me of some of the players from the movie. Igbinoba is someone who was highly recruited out of high school, but grades got in the way. He committed to Mississippi State, then had to go the JUCO route and has some how ended up in Greeley - lots of guys out there like him.

I hope he fits in to our offense. We don't normally use a fullback in the traditional way. I also hope he can pick up the offense, being that he is coming in so late.

These kids represent highly gifted athletes that are ill-equipped for Division 1 college athletics. There is a reason they are at that school instead of the high profile schools they have the physical skill sets for, and it has to do with their moral fabric.

In my experience, college athletes are cut from a different cloth. They possess a grit and determination that most of their peers don't. Those factors transcend physical ability.

It's true that there are successful pre-madonnas with freak ability -- but it is the exception, not the rule. Most don't make it passed the first year or two. In my experience it's generally the kids with strong work ethics that are the best players. That they developed and honed skills and rose above the field of other competitors is representative of that.
