Due to lower enrollment people have begun losing jobs at EWU. I assume we will hear more, probably with a late Friday PM press release to minimize attention. Budget challenges aren't new in higher education but with enrollment growing at WWU and particularly CWU why can't EWU keep pace? I think we all know why. Our Athletic program continues to thrive despite the lack of leadership in Hargreaves. Nothing will change until we get a leadership change.

The question remains, why would the BOD reward poor performance with a contract extension?

I have no real insight into how our president is actually doing as an administrator and leader on a daily basis, but Southern Oregon running Cullinan out of the place was a huge red flag. It is my understanding that the faculty down in Ashland dang near threw a party when we hired Mary. I want to hire a President who when you talk to former colleagues and employers they have great things to say.

EWU is a great school with super programs and it is affordable. Our AD saw the writing on the wall and he left. I love EWU and we have to work twice as hard as the bigger schools (UW & WSU). We need an AD and president that will inspire our student body and alumni. Let's get excited about our school and make it happen. GO EAGS!!

May I ask why enrollment is dropping? If it’s not the cost of tuition, what is it? Location? And what does part does the president and/or AD play?

Our current AD is the right person for the job. Remains to be seen for the Pres.

I've worked in Higher Ed for 19 years (not currently at EWU). Higher Ed as a whole is seeing a drastic drop in enrollments due to two main reasons. 1.) This generation is a lot smaller than the Millenial generation so there are a lot less students now. 2.) This generation is leary of student loan debt so fewer are going to school as a result. Of the ones going to 4 year schools, many are choosing online programs. Tech schools are also seeing a bump in enrollment as the trades are re-emerging as a career choice. Fewer students plus more options=less enrollment. EWU has been the school of choice over CWU and WWU for the last two decades. If the other schools have rallied and are growing, then it's because they have captured a trend that EWU is behind on. I haven't looked at the numbers and trends so can't offer an informed opinion.

The current budget shortfall is 3.6 million. In 2009, EWU faced a 26 million dollar shortfall and overcame that. This is a very minor budget crisis and has more to do with EWU not being able to sustain it's reserves if business continues as it always has. (source BOT budget presentations that can be found online.) This too shall pass as long as the Administration reacts to it. The firings of two upper level administrators last year that were involved in recruiting and retention tells me they are reacting.

Dr. Cullinan is good at communicating a vision, but most of her vision is to make EWU culturally diverse and the school of choice for first generation students. All worthy goals, but Athletics is an area that I don't think she understands well beyone the front porch to the university concept. However, our AD is doing an amazing job of getting Dr. Cullinan involved in fundraising and special events. I've seen her go get the President and walk her out to events and such that were beyond the President's comfort zone. Lynn is amazing and we are lucky to have her.

The school I am currently at is also having to reexamine how they are doing business. People got lulled into a sense of stability and then the market demanded a rather rapid change. Many are scrambling to get back on top of things.

Go Eagles!

While I agree with what you’ve said, the part about the AD is factually inaccurate. He was told his contract would not be renewed.

The problem with the current President is that she seems incapable of making a decision and putting a plan to action. Everything gets sent to some committee where it treads water indefinitely. The stadium project is no exception.

I wish Dr. Mary Cullinan would get excited about....anything. Maybe she could really get behind the Football program. Seems clear to me the best thing EWU has going for it is the Football team, as far being recognizable all over the place. All started from the team winning, crowds increasing and winning that championship then all the closet EWU people started being proud of the school. It's a winner so hop on board DR. and GET EXCITED about...something.

*The book store is making bank...believe it and that all started when the team started winning then everyone started buying stuff and lots of it. Never use to be that way, now everyone knows the logo.

And as I understand it, this is typical as employment rates drop. Less reason to attend college.

Agreed. She does not inspire and needs to go.

Any intel on the process, firings, attrition, positions being eliminated for next year? Most of all, is the Athletic Department, and football program currently being hit?
