I’m here to drop negativity… no shock, I’m sure,

I suspect the offense will be just fine. The question for Eastern is always whether the defense will even be passable. This is a year where we’re likely gonna have to get comfortable winning games that aren’t the 50-40 types that have been so common. Eastern had the only truly good offense in the Big Sky last year, but gave up an average of 30 to D1 opponents. We need to be one of the top-tier defenses that regularly holds team under 20. I have no idea if we’ve made strides in the area or not, but we can’t continue to be middle of the pack defensively or worse.

Also, even with the most minor adjustments, the special teams units can’t possibly be worse than last year. But they need to be a whole lot better, not just “better.” As per usual, the offense tends to plug and play. Everywhere else, it fluctuates from average to terrible.

This is spot on. I think there's some tangible drop-off in the offense as compared to last year but it's still a fangerous unit that can score points. The special teams do seem to be improved...at the very least the punting and coverage looks a lot better. What did you guys think?

I thought the offense looked strong. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a good performance against a decent defense. Defense looked like status quo for Eastern, quite poor in general. It’s not like they don’t make plays, it’s just that they can’t seem to string together 3 or 4 good plays in a row without screwing up something. Tackling was highly dubious, and there were a lot of plays where the linebackers just seemed completely lost.

Tennessee State was better than I expected, but it should’ve been a more comfortable win. 3 or their TDs were gift wrapped because of bad tackling, bad pursuit angles, or linebackers going MIA.

Reading my mind. To your credit, you thought the offense would be OK and it was OK enough against a TSU team that is learning how to play together with all their TR's. Lot's of room for growth. The LB play was horrible. Banks got better as the game wore on, but the LB's were missing throughout the contest despite the stat sheet. Tackling was atrocious. On TSU's last score I thought Tommasani was the spy and then he elected to track a crossing WR who was already covered and that pulled him out of position allowing the QB to scramble for the TD and worse it was on 4th down after a series of good stops. The fact that no points were scored until the end of the game on a magnificent throw and catch is VERY disconcerting. To the Eag's credit, no one ever gives up. Proud of the effort and like every year, hoping for a HUGE improvement in week two. May not matter with Oregon looming.
