Viking Basketball Hosts Exhibition Friday Against Linfield

http://www.goviks.com/news/2010/11/2/MBB_1102105848.aspx

I noticed the Vikings have added Brandon Hawkins, a juco transfer from Fresno City College, to their roster. He is the son of Hersey Hawkins, former NBA player for 13 years. Brandon initially signed with Pacific University and below is his player profile from there:

I wasn't able to go tonight. I know it's just exhibition, but I'd love to hear any thoughts anyone would have on how the team looked tonight. I'm especially curious about the new guys.

119-74...second half was pretty boring as we just walked all over them...

Portland, OR - After leading the Big Sky Conference in scoring last season, the Portland State Vikings picked up where they left off last March, routing Linfield 119-74 in a preseason exhibition game at the Stott Center.

The Vikings were lights out from all over the court, hitting .522 from the field, and making 15 three-pointers in the game. PSU also converted 32-42 at the line.

Senior guard Melvin Jones led the Vikings with 24 points, making 8-10 shots, 4-6 from three point range and 4-4 at the line. He also had six assists and three steals in 23 minutes of play.

Chris Harriel scored 17 points and Phil Nelson added 16 for the Vikings as six scored in double figures.

Linfield hung with the Vikings early, hitting three three-pointers and taking a 19-16 lead at the 13:36 mark of the first half. Later, Linfield led 25-24 on a pair of Zach Meikle free throws with 9:20 left.

But the Vikings took the lead for good on back-to-back three pointers by Melvin Jones and Phil Nelson. The Viks went up 34-28 as those shots ignited a 33-13 run over the last eight minutes of the halftime.

Jones' 17 first-half points led PSU to a 61-41 halftime advantage and the Vikings cruised home from there.

PSU kept the pedal to the metal in the second half, hitting 13 of their first 16 shots, and scoring 58 more points.

The Vikings 17 steals fueled 26 fast break points and PSU scored 39 points off Linfield turnovers.

Junior center Nate Lozeau scored 12 points on 6-7 shooting and had four rebounds in his first start for the Vikings. Junior forward Chehales Tapscott, also making his first start, had nine points and seven rebounds.

Tree Thomas scored 15 points for the Vikings and Charles Odum had 11 with four assists and three steals.

Senior center KC Wiser led Linfield with 19 points.

GAME NOTES: The game was a non-counting preseason exhibition. The Wildcats are an NCAA III member of the Northwest Conference… PSU beat Linfield, 85-52, in a counting game last Dec. 9… the Vikings come off a 13-19 season in 2009-10. PSU was 7-9 in the Big Sky Conference and reached the conference tournament semifinals… Portland State begins counting games next Friday when the Vikings host Pepperdine at the Stott Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game airs on Freedom 970 AM and http://www.970.am. It is also available on Big Sky TV at http://www.b2tv.com. Live stats can be found at GoViks.com.

Odum, Tapscott and Lozeau did well. Stats aren't out yet - curious to see how we did on assists. We'll at least play Pepperdine close (they have a good team this year).

First off...

Chalupas!

Had we not gone cold in the later part of the 2nd half, we'd have put up 125 or 130 on them. To be expected when a D1 team plays a DIII team.

Here's some random thoughts on the game tonight.

-I love me some Melvin Jones. Looked great with the ball, shot well, passed well, and was perfect from the line. What else can you ask from your point guard.

-Tree looked to have way more touch in the key tonight. It reminded me of the progress that another guy named Thomas made early in his PSU career on the park blocks.

- It's so freaking awesome to have a couple of bigs on the roster.

- Odd that Geving would put the starting five back in with under ten minutes to go in the game. I guess it's exhibition, and he's looking for things, but damn, talk about putting the foot down on the neck.

- I wish there was a box score on goviks.com, we had a ton of steals tonight.

- It was good to see Coleman and Odum get some minutes.

- McClouskey is a vocal assistant coach.

A little rusty early, but I'm pretty pumped for the Pepperdine game next week.

I went over to the Linfield board to get the stats, and you're right, Linfield committed 24 TOs (forced by us?). We had 13. Those TOs converted to 32 points! We also had a large advantage in rebounds, with 6'1" Odum getting a lion's share of them. He also had a large nunber of free throws - a lot of driving layups that didn't go but drew the foul. That guy bounces all over the court. Coleman was in for only 8 minutes; I suspect he'll be playing more by mid-season. And you're right - it's nice to have two bigs in the lineup after years without any. Lozeau looked competent, though I wonder about his seeming lack of rebounding. Was that just a quirk of the game?

Pepperdine looks tall and apparently good. Michael Thompson Jr. is on that team, and is shooting 12-14 a game.

Guede played 19 minutes, picked up three points, 2 steals, a couple assists and three personal fouls. May not make points, but he's terrific as a defender.

Two names I didn't notice in the write up, Guede and Cataldo. Did they play?

Guede did play. Don't remember if Cataldo played or not.

Was Cataldo even suited?

I think Guede will be huge off of the bench this season.

"Freshman Brandon Cataldo, a 6-foot-10 center from Rainier (Ore.) High School, is expected to redshirt."
