Sounds like Hayford has most of the right pieces to have a pretty respectable team. Now lets see the coaching abilities of he and his staff.

'Oldtimeewalum' has been quiet for awhile, so I shouldn't stir him up, but he was bemoaning the fact that new coach Hayford had only recruited one local player. I thought of him when I read the quote in this morning's paper from Shadle player and WSU recruit, Brett Boese: "GROWING UP, EVERY KID FROM SPOKANE WANTS TO PLAY AT WSU OR GONZAGA OR UW." That pretty much sums up the problem EW coaches have recruiting local D1 talent kids. It won't change overnight if at all, but I have confidence that Coach Hayford will bring respectability back to Eastern basketball.

i for one am very excited for this upcoming year! i think we will have a team and coach that will win quite a few big sky games. brutal preseason schedule though.

New to the site but I just started to get back into to the eags. I have heard a rumor that the eags werent even recruiting boese how does a team like wsu snag the kid and were not even looking at him. Also is any one familiar with Ryan McIntyre that played at eastvalley in high school, and last year played at Montana State U. My son goes to school at scc and saw him walking the campus lately. A good friend of mine was the ex asst. coach at MSU and he said that he's an incredible shooter but is just in need of a year to gain weight, but he mentioned Coach Hayford had contacted Ryan during the offseason. I watched the kid in highschool and he sure could stroke well beyond the line. After coming from a D1 with expierence he could help spread defenses.
Also, what happen to other local Sean Fischer(sp)???

Our schedule this year is Brutal but I think Hayford will really turn this program around. I agree with ranger and I think we go .500 or better in conference this year.

Sean Fischer (Gonz Prep) is at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston as is P.J. Bolte, (Franklin Pierce) 6-6, who played at Rice for a year, redshirted at Eastern, then transferred and played at Highline CC (16pts and 10 rbs) without ever playing at EW.

Well atleast sean has decided to go where he has a chance to play, he was awfully undersized for the 2 guard. I also talked to a few of my friends who are coaches in the GSL and one particularly close to McIntyre, and he said Hayford has a strong relationship with him and plans on bringing him in on a visit.
Also I didnt realize just how old are guards are this year. We have a chance to make some noise in league. Go Eags!

@spoeagle - you are right, I have been quiet for a while, but with hoops around the corner, I am fired up! I will have to go back and look at my posts, but if they came across as unhappy that Coach Hayford is not recruiting local players, that was definitely not my intent. I am a big believer in getting the best players that we can regardless of where they come from. It is interesting that the 2 things I heard most when we hired Coach Hayford was fundraising and getting local players. And my previous comments were intended to indicate the irony because I know that Earlywine was constantly pressured to get local/in-state players because it would save department dollars in reduced scholarship costs. Maybe the AD/department has come to it's senses and will simply allow Hayford to get the best players. At least I hope so

With our football team out of the playoffs assume many of our fans will shift their attention to Men's basketball. Whoever this clown is who runs down our AD by implying he somehow crippled our team by preventing the best players from coming to Cheney should be ignored but that's difficult to do. We all want to move on and support our current coach and players. Our AD is an adult and he can certainly handle the criticism but I've decided to finally respond. If our previous coach couldn't get it done with the resources available, he either needed to find those resources or he shouldn't have taken the job. Obviously Coach Hayford has an advantage there because he's worked in this region for many years. Hiring a coach without strong ties to the State of WA proved to be a mistake. It is that simple.

Enough talk, let's give Coach Hayford our support and move forward. We wish Coach Earlywine well and we are moving on. Or at least most of us are.

I guess I will reserve judgement on Coach Hayford until at least half-way through this season, but I like what he has done so far. He has brought in 3 pretty high profile players into this program and some others that seem pretty talented as well. So if recruiting is any indication of coaching, then I think we are on the right track.

Yeah that was my main wonder about him too coming from D3, could he recruit to a D1 program? He has certainly done that so far and has some good looking guys... from his D3 experience it certainly seems as if he can coach basketball well, it will be interesting to see how that plays out with all of Earlywine's guys, I am excited to see what he can do.

After listening to Coach Hayford on the radio show tonight it is hard not to be excited about what is to come.
I would predict the most exciting year/years since Stuckey was there.

Have to agree with you Clawman. I must admit I was a little leery at first, but he sounds like a solid fit.

The big concern from everyone seemed to be whether or not this staff would be able to recruit. I think they've answered that question.

Pardon me for being a killjoy, but let me ask a question: exactly how has Coach Hayford and his staff answered the recruiting question??? Isnt it a little premature to definitively declare a recruit to be a "good get" before he has ever scored a point or got a rebound for us?

I've always thought it best to wait until a kid has played for us for at least one year before we decide whether or not he was a good get. It's amazing how many kids with a lot of hype dont work out, and conversely, how many under-the-radar guys end up being good players.

I feel like we have the answer on Colimon, Forbes, Winford, Johnson, Ederain, and Griffin. Even after a year, the jury is still out on Hankins, Brown, and Henry. So, lets hold on for a minute on the guys who are not yet even on campus, or who have yet to play a single minute in an Eagle uniform.
