M: 2017-18 Season

in an exhibition game. UCSC has a decent team and you could tell they've played a few years together as they kept it close till the end of the first half, 48-37 Hornets. At one point, Strings had 23 of the Hornets 34 points and he was unstoppable as he finished with 42 points.

The two new JC transfer guards from Western Texas, Hicks and Tolbert, started and both played well. Tolbert is very quick and a great ball-handler and Hicks doesn't mind putting up three's, hitting four. It looks like Jeff Wu has his shot back, which is a good sign as he started too and played a lot. Patton is improved too and can really get up in the air. Ugbaja was on crutches with his right foot in a boot.

Not as many bench players got real playing time cuz the Banana Slugs were too good. It was a legitimate test for an exhibition game.

Hornets lose at Colorado State 72-61. I watched most of it and to be honest the Hornets looked way better than I anticipated. The Hornets didn't match up well against CSU's size but they hung tough. Hornets were down 2 at half, briefly held a small lead early in the 2nd half, and trailed by 7 with about 3:30 to go in the game. A bricked open 3 by Wu would have made it a 4 point game.

I like the lineup with Strings and Patton in the front court with the 3 guard look in the backcourt. Hicks and Tolbert look like they will finally provide some perimeter shooting that this program has been desperately missing the past couple of years. The Hornets will really need one of the returning guards to step up along side the newbies.

Hornets get ran off the court last Friday at San Francisco 69-56.

Hornet fall behind early, battle back, then get ran off the court at G1 to the dungpilers 64-47. I couldn't go, had something come up. Not looking good for this team, it's anyone's guess when the first D1 win will come from.

I think the dominance we had in basketball has shifted to ucfe.

We are still up 66-50 in the Causeway Series. Hopefully this team will improve the more they play together. Last night there were long stretches where the ball just wouldn't drop.

As much as I love Brian Katz, it’s time to review his position with the school. Now, I know he has a lot going against him with him when it comes to recruiting and developing a program with our facilities/conference affiliation and school history situation. With that being said, after having watched every game this year (Causeway game) in person, it seems like he has lost some of his fire. The reality of it, this program was only successful for a two year period and that was because Katz struck lighting in a bottle with Mikh McKinney. Maybe with Mark Orr’s background at St.Mary’s, maybe he can guide the program to new heights. I think the CIT was Katz’s heights, and I might be asking for a little too much but would like to have a taste at that automatic bid.

FYI, he’s off to a good start with this year’s recruiting class but his “motion offense” is not at all effective without a player who’s “hungry” to score the ball. Unless our program limit/goal every year is to reach .500.

Or I could just be overreacting from this SDSU game 😂😅

14pts in a half on national tv, didn’t help anything. I agree, Katz is the best the school can do with facilities, pay and history. I’d like to have a year above .500, won’t happen this year.

Safe to say the Hornets won’t ever be invited to a Wooden Legacy Tournament ever again.

Game 1: Hornets get routed in a laugher to SDSU, 89-52.
Hornets were just over matched against one of the top programs on the West Coast. Wasn’t expecting anything more than to not get completely embarrassed…and it was worse than getting completely embarrassed. 14 first half points is inexcusable no matter the opponent.

Game 2: Hornets drop a winnable game to CSU Fullerton, 68-63.
The Hornets just don’t have anyone that wants the ball other than Strings. The Hornets lose by 15 if Strings doesn’t carry this team in the last 6 minutes or so.

Game 3: Hornets face St Joe’s on Sunday at 11:30 AM.

I agree with what GAS said (welcome to Sac Buzz btw). Once Graves went down for the season it was pretty obvious this was a throw away season…but what has hurt his program the most has been the misses on the recent recruiting classes. Most everyone is either a bust (Wu, Jacobs), or on their way to being a bust (Patton, Le’afa). I like Patton and maybe he comes around, but he really needs to start scoring points inside and needs to stay out of foul trouble. Le’afa has solid defense, but he can’t make open shots and that kills this offense. The JC guys (Hicks, Tolbert) have energy but are too undersized to really make much of a difference inside the arc. Fowler has potential so the jury is still out on him. Martin is just a body to eat up minutes and fouls and grab a few points and boards along the way.

Katz is on contract though the ‘19-’20 season so he has a few more recruiting classes to turn it around, but he really needs to hit paydirt on a couple of guys to get this team competitive again. Then there is of course the facilities issue. I would like to see the Hornets play most of its non-con games in G1 against quality regional opponents (P12, most MWC, some WCC), which would hopefully help on the recruiting trail.

That’s it, 556 hornet fans in the 19,000 seat G1 playing non-conference Bethany and Lincoln YMCA. Not feeling the warm fuzzies for Katz anymore. Actually, I’d like the school to drop the sport, after 25yrs and they still play in and are funded like a D2. The program is so far behind the eight ball for a D1 program it will never be a consistently winning program. Appears the women have a throw away season too.

 Those games can still be in the Nest. Get Cal, Nevada, BYU, other name programs in G1. Enough people will show up to those names that draw to make games in G1 worthwhile.

Game 3: Hornets squander a 12 point 2nd half lead and lose to St. Joe’s 74-69.
Hornets played well for most of the game, especially inside with Patton (15 pts, 7 boards) and Strings (20 pts). St. Joe’s got hot from 3 and the Hornets couldn’t answer and then folded in crunch time. Good hustle and rebounding against the bigger St. Joe’s line up, just too many TOs. Fowler looked good, he should improve if Katz lets him log enough minutes. Disappointing loss, but something for this team to build off of at least.

So the Hornets would be like the Washington Generals to the visiting Harlem Globetrotters?

How much would it cost the school to sponsor a program, but not play any games? Just forfeit everything through the season to give the young men an experience. We can say we sponsor D1 basketball in name only to recruit those underprivileged poor students who want an education, and want to attend a D1 school. They would save $$$ in travel costs, be in class for every lecture and not have to lose time studying during that silly march timeframe.

Hornets lose 70-54 at St. Mary's. I caught the 2nd half, Hornets didn't play too bad considering they were giving up a ton of size inside and managed to grab 8 steals. The game was a 10-12 point deficit for most of the half, which would have been a lot closer if the Hornets had someone that could make open 3's. Tough night for Strings (15 pts on 7/14, 6 boards), he struggled against St. Mary's size. Excellent game for Le'afa (20 pts (3/5 from 3), 6 boards). Fowler had a few nice plays to the rim for points (4 pts, 3 boards). No one else scored more than 4 points.

Hornets beat up on NAIA opponent Antelope Valley 97-74. Everyone scored except Herrick who didn't take a shot. Close game early on, Hornets pulled away in the final 6 minutes of the first half and then roll in the 2nd half. Only knock was poor FT shooting.

Hornets hit the road to face a very good Boise State team on 12/9 @ 1 PM PST. Should be a laugher.

Is there something of a BSC-WCC Challenge going on? We're playing Saint Mary's, while UOP is playing Northern Colorado. Is the same thing going on around the conference?

Hornets got rolled at Boise State 2 weekends ago 77-54.

Hornets ground out a win last night and get their first D1 win of the season in the Nest over CSUN, 66-61.
Solid game by everyone as the Hornets had the size advantage inside. Hornets probably win comfortably if they would have defended the 3 better. Patton (16 pts, 8 boards, 3 blks, 6/8 FT) had an amazing game on both ends of the court. More impressively he stayed out of foul trouble and didn't pick up his 3rd and 4th foul until under 5 minutes left. Strings (14 pts) was solid in the first half but was doubled up most of the 2nd. He had a terrible night at the stripe (0/4). Fowler (10 pts, 4 boards, 3 stls) had a good solid game and nailed a clutch 3 that turned the tide in the Hornets favor late in the game. Le'afa (10 pts, 9 boards) had some clutch boards and solid defense in critical moments late in the game. Wu struggled from the floor but still managed an 8:1 assist to TO ratio. Tolbert had 8 points off the bench.

Hornets lose a close one at G1 against Portland, 80-75, this past Thursday.

Le'afa (23 pts) had a monster game, Strings (19 pts, 13 boards) and Tolbert (16 pts) had good games as well. Fowler (8 pts) continues to be solid. This was a one possession game with under 2 minutes to go. Poor FT shooting and poor perimeter defense sinks the Hornets again.
