M: CIT @ Portland

The Hornets are selected for the CIT and travel to Portland to face the Pilots once again. Portland narrowly beat the Hornets in the Nest earlier in the season and are the only team to win in the Nest this year.
Sacramento State will travel north to face Portland on Wednesday, March 18, at 7:05 p.m. in the first round of the tournament. The Hornets and Pilots played each other earlier this year at the Nest on Dec. 14 in a game that went down to the wire and saw Portland pull out an 80-75 victory.

Would have loved to see a new opponent, but any opponent is good at this juncture. With a victory, there's still a shot at a home game in round two depending on the results of the other matchups with no set bracket.

I still think that UCD and SAC need to play @Davis in front of a packed crowd to top the season off. Any chance of that PGP???

Davis is going to the NIT so I don't know how that can happen this year. It would of been a sure sell-out. Is there no set brackets in the CIT?? I was hoping they would publish a bracket so I can make a plan about attending. Portland will be a tough game but we got beat the first time by their bigs. I noticed that lately they have been living or dying with their outside game (Bailey, Pressley, Sharp etal). We have a chance to upset them if they don't pound it inside. Really happy to see this team get at least another game together. They really deserve this.

I can't believe my good luck. I have tickets to the Portland 2nd and 3rd round games and was glad to see that we got the Big Sky rep, Eastern Washington, wear a nephew graduated, but now I just read that the Hornets will also be up there the night before! Now I can watch the Hornets in person one more time - and I'm a Univ of Portland grad. I'll have to wear my Hornets gear tho this time around.

That game we played here against the Pilots was also one of the most entertaining; lots of non-stop action and I think the Hornets have improved more since then than the Pilots have, altho they didn't have Bailey in that game. Should be a good one.

Sounds awesome; pretty cool how that worked out for you.

So what are some thoughts about this game? Yeah it’s cool that the Hornets get another game, but the reality is very few people care about any non-NCAAT games. Think Katz starts working in some of the underclassmen in preparation for next season? Or does he treat this like any other game and keep doing what has worked all season?

Personally I would like to see some of the underclassmen get some playing time just to give them (and fans) a little taste of what’s to come. McKinney is averaging over 37 minutes/game on the season and Garrity is over 32 mpg, so it isn’t too far out of the question to see them get a few extra minutes of rest and have Graves, Barlett, or another guard get a little more time alongside Demps.

Since Portland has good size upfront and everyone except Mills returns for next season, I don’t think the front court rotation will vary much. Although I would like to see Strings get some good time in.

I think Katz plays for the win. If he can win and get some young guards in he will. I think Strings is going to get some time anyway, since he has earned it. The reason for playing for the win is to reward the kids who got you where you are and to possibly influence some recruit down the road. Just playing post-season should help recruiting a bit. I don't know of any recruits in the Portland area but recruits in general can watch the stream to get an idea of Sac's way of playing. Mikh and Dylan deserve to play as much as they want to play in this and any more games this year. My only regret is that I'm not The Green Hornet this week.LOL Do us proud TGH!!!

I think they play for the win because it gives the team a shot at another home game, likely a rubber match against NAU if they beat GCU.

That would be fantastic. I'm definitely up for that. Do you really think we would get a home game?

Well after I posted my question about whether we would be able to host a CIT game I tuned in the stream from NJIT. I think I found the ONE DI gym smaller than ours. Their gym has seats on only one side of the court. Where the players benchs are there is no one behind them. Our gym will definitely be adequate.

This is where the bracketless structure gets interesting. The CIT will consider regional matchups in every round, so my money is on the Portland/Sac winner playing the NAU/GCU winner. If Sac wins, I'd say we host a home game, yes.

The Pilots are selling all reserved seats for $10 (students $5) and making all seating general admission. They only sell out when the Zags are in town; maybe they'll get a few more now w/these prices.
The Chiles Center holds nearly 4,900.

Assuming we win, I doubt we host the following round. I think the CIT hosting is based on bids and GCU nearly sells out their place for every game…and they just recently expanded their arena to about 7k. Unless the Hornet admin is ok with taking a hefty loss on a bid, I don’t see us out bidding GCU. Now if NAU wins then who knows. This is just another reason for Macriss to prioritize getting an event center going.

This.

Yeah, I can see why you think the bigs will give us problems..they ARE BIG and they are pretty skilled but I noticed they didn't use the bigs as much after Bailey got healthy. I hope they continue to live and die with Bailey as I think we have a better chance that way. Now Bailey could kill us also. He is real good. I just like our odds better without having to try and stop three 6'11" guys at the same time. Hornets, as we all know by now, will leave it all on the court whether they win or lose. These Hornets never quit. Hope they win another and get a home game, possibly against NAU. Would love to play them again (expecially at home).

Very sparse crowd on hand at Portland. Quality streaming though.

5-4 Portland under 16 minutes. Portland has had some open looks from deep but are missing them. Hornets have not gotten thing going on offense. Tiffin got the start over Stuteville and has been solid on the defensive end.

14-13 Portland lead under 11 mins. Things have picked up a bit for both teams. McKinney has 2 PFs (picked up a cheapie in transition). Hornets are getting open shots (outside and in) off of the drive to the rim.

21-20 Portland under 8 mins. Portland taking advantage with their size and getting some points in the paint. Tiffin also with 2 PFs now. Hornets are still hanging with them.

32-29 Hornet lead under 3 mins. McKinney has 3 PFs, Tiffin with 2. Garrity is getting hot from outside. Portland is drawing a lot of fouls inside. Hornets playing pretty well though and hanging tough.

36-30 Hornet lead at the half. Hornets playing well despite the foul trouble. Garrity is killing it, great team effort so far.

NAU just finished doing their job by beating Grand Canyon.

45-36 Hornet lead under 16 minutes. Hornets are starting to frustrate Portland. Great start to the 2nd half by the Hornets.

50-40 Hornet lead under 14 minutes. Hornets are still playing well with a great team effort...giving up a lot of 2nd chances though. Stuteville needs to be better on the boards.

55-42 Hornet lead under 12 to go. Portland heading to the line. Hornets are in complete control right now, need to keep this up.

57-54 Hornet lead under 10 to go. Naturally as soon as I say that Portland goes on a run. :ohno:

Same score under 8 to go. Portland has all the momentum. Hornets are hanging on for dear life.

62-58 Hornet lead under 6 to go. Going to be a close one.

64-62 Hornet lead under 4 to go. Portland is playing great on the glass. I think the Hornets are in trouble.

68-66 Hornet lead and ball under a minute.

McKinney sinks 2 FTs, then turnover Portland. 70-66 Hornet lead under 16 seconds left.

73-66 HORNETS WIN!!!! Clutch McKinney FT shooting seals it for us.
