I had to laugh when I saw it on TV last night...they called him a "preferred walk-on" at BYU! LOL! Heck...I went to school at the "Y" and love the place...it's a great school. But I don't know if I've ever heard of a "preferred" walk-on before...I could be wrong but I think it's a hilarious way to make somebody feel good.
There was a long debate on one of the Des News message boards yesterday about the value of a "preferred walk-on" designation. As I understand it, it means you're part of the squad that gets to go to training camp from the beginning. (There is a limit on the number of players who can attend training camp before school starts). So a preferred walk-on is guaranteed a training camp slot. Non-preferred walk-ons have to wait until classes start before they can start working out with the team. A subtle distinction, no doubt, but a distinction nonetheless.
Sounds to me like he'll just spend a year at BYU before going on a mission. And after his mission is over with then they still probably won't offer him a scholarship. And then he'll just fall into our lap.
