Portland State seniors Cory McCaffrey and DeShawn Shead have both been named to the preseason All-Big Sky Conference football team as chosen by a select group of league media and sports information directors.

McCaffrey, a 5-9, 185-pound running back from Sisters, OR, was a first team All-Big Sky selection in 2010, while Shead, a 6-2, 210-pound cornerback from Palmdale, CA, was an All-Big Sky second teamer in 2010. The two Vikings were among 29 players who made the preseason All-Conference team and are anticipated to be the offensive and defensive leaders for Portland State in 2011.

With 1,287 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, McCaffrey ranked second in the Big Sky Conference last year in rushing. He is the league's top returning rusher as Eastern Washington's Taiwan Jones has gone on to the NFL. McCaffrey was fifth in all-purpose yards (129.4 per game) and seventh in touchdowns in the Big Sky. He had eight straight 100-yard games and led the Big Sky in total rushing in league games (1,131) despite being injured early and knocked out in the season finale.

Shead has been one of the Big Sky's top defensive backs for three years starting all 33 games of his career. Late in the 2010 season, he moved to safety and is expected to make the move permanent in 2011. In 2010, Shead had 51 tackles and team-highs of seven pass breakups and two fumble recoveries despite opponents throwing away from his side of the field.

In three years, Shead has totaled 147 tackles, nine interceptions, four fumble recoveries and 21 pass breakups for the Vikings.

Defending national champion Eastern Washington had eight players named to the preseason All-Conference team. Montana State quarterback DeNarius McGhee was named preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Sacramento State defensive end Zack Nash was named preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

The Big Sky Conference will release the preseason coaches and media polls on Tuesday.

Portland State begins practice on Aug. 7 at Stott Community Field on the PSU campus. Further details on the practice schedule are forthcoming.
