The trouble with being in your last year of eligibility is that just about the time you figure you’ve got a new system down pat, it’s time to move on.

That’s not exactly where Strong Safety Micheal Dorsey finds himself, but it’s close.

“I really wish I had another year. Coach Glanville’s defense is a lot more aggressive, there’s a lot more blitzing and a lot more man-to-man coverage. It’s a lot of fun,” said the 23-year-old senior who actually graduated with a 3.4 cumulative gpa last December.

Last year began with the team not knowing who would be coaching. “We didn’t know who the head coach would be, then there was all the excitement around Coach Glanville and we were really energized and excited about learning the new system,” he said.

“Mike Dorsey was a senior when we got here,” recalled Alundis Brice, assistant coach for defensive backs. “He’s a real leader. In fact he’s one of the brightest kids I’ve ever met.”

Brice said Dorsey’s mental quickness played a major role in this year’s secondary.

“He was the adjustment guy in our secondary. We react to what the offence gives us. Dorsey did the checks. That takes very quick thinking...in fact, it really has to be a natural reaction, there isn’t even time to think,” he said of the Rex Putnam high school graduate.

Dorsey also felt he blossomed a bit under the new system, playing with more aggression. “I played in the box a little better,” he said.

His on-field highlight this year was playing Montana. “We played pretty well overall as a team. It was a fun and exciting game and we had opportunities to beat them in front of their home crowd,” he said.

Brice describes Dorsey as “a very mature person. I think he could be a US Senator or a company president someday. He’s someone this university will be proud to have as an alum.” Along with some other teammates, Dorsey has been an official school Ambassador. Among other things, Ambassador’s are called upon to provide VIP campus tours, “a tribute to his intelligence and outgoing personality,” Brice said.

Whether there’s elective office in Dorsey’s future remains to be seen, but at this point, it definitely appears that there’s a Masters Degree in International Management, a program he’ll begin in the PSU business department this fall.

From a walk-on to the PSU football program in 2003 to a highly-rated starting strong safety has been quite a journey.

“I’ve had a lot of fun. We’ve had a great staff and I’ve met a lot of people. Portland State is a great place to go to school and Portland is a great place to live.”

This is one in a series of articles that will run on GoViks.com throughout the summer. The athletes featured are those who earned endowed or named athletics scholarships at Portland State during the 2007-08 year. Micheal Dorsey is a recipient of the Phil Knight Scholarship.
