Could Portland State pick-up Moser?

Freshman guard Moser to transfer

At this rate, UCLA basketball coach Ben Howland might not have any players to work with next season.

Freshman guard Mike Moser became the latest evacuee on Monday afternoon, announcing that he will transfer following the spring quarter. Moser, who originally committed to Arizona out of high school, became the third underclassman to leave the Bruins in the past four months.

J'mison Morgan, a sophomore center, was dismissed from the team last week. Sophomore forward Drew Gordon left the Bruins last December.

UCLA is also temporarily without freshman forward Brendan Lane, who will be out for five months after having surgery to repair a left ankle injury.

"The way the season worked out for me this year, I feel it is necessary for me personally, to make a move somewhere else so I can play," Moser said through a statement released by the program. "I have enjoyed my time here at UCLA and have built great relationships with my coaches and teammates. I'm going to stay in Division I and haven't spoken to anyone at all about playing. I wont rush into a decision. I'll just wait and see what happens in the next few weeks."

Moser, a Portland, Ore., native, played in just 15 games last season, averaging 0.6 points and 0.5 rebounds per appearance. He made a habit of working out late after home games, often staying to work on his dribbling and perimeter shooting.

"Mike is a good kid, a great student and a very hard worker," Howland said. "I have enjoyed having him in our program. He has a great attitude and I'm supportive of him finding a program where he will have a chance to play more minutes than we envision he will have here."

UCLA finished 14-18 this past season, its worst record since Howland's first year in 2003-04.

That's unlikely, but I would love to see it happen. The team needs to keep stocking up on local talent.

The Viks missed out on Moser, but it looks like Geving at least tried:

UCLA transfer Mike Moser picks UNLV

If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, who built an NCAA Tournament team this past season around star transfers like Tre’Von Willis (Memphis), Chace Stanback (UCLA) and Derrick Jasper (Kentucky), landed another UCLA transfer, 6-foot-8 forward Mike Moser, on Monday.

Moser, who will redshirt next season and will have three years of eligibility remaining, was granted his release by Bruins head coach Ben Howland earlier this month after averaging just 0.6 points and 0.5 rebounds in 15 games. He was slowed by an early back injury and connected on just 1-of-11 3-point attempts and 4-of-20 overall field goal tries.

“It’s an opportunity to play for a good team and a good coach,” Moser, who visited UNLV over the weekend, said. “Coach (Lon) Kruger is a great guy, and I feel like I related well with him. I really like the coaching staff there.”

Moser was rated the nation’s No. 92 prospect by Rivals.com for the Class of 2009 and played for the U.S. Junior National Select squad in the Nike Hoops Summit. He originally verbally committed to Arizona but re-opened his recruiting when then-Wildcats head coach Lute Olson stepped down.

Moser, who averaged 28 points and 13 rebounds en route to Oregon’s Mr. Basketball honors at Portland Grant High School, then picked UCLA over a handful of other Pac-10 offers.

“I just wasn’t given the opportunity I deserved,” he said. “(Howland) wanted me to stay, but I thought it would be best to leave.”

Moser is one of three players to leave UCLA during the past six months. Another Bruin big man, 6-foot-9 Drew Gordon, also visited UNLV before enrolling at New Mexico.

Moser said he also received strong interest from Ohio State, St. John’s, Saint Mary’s, San Diego State and :D Portland State. :D

Moser, Wiley, who's next? These guys are both from Portland, both had fantastic stats in high school, but didn't do much in the Pac-10. Maybe they would have if they had stayed, but their coaches obviously didn't think so. Makes you wonder. In any case do we have any scholarships left?? We've passed out a slew of them to guard JuCos this last week or so. We've got to be very thin.
