At least until I can get the $$ to finish my B.S. (I'm 9 classes shy), I'm a secretary. Once I finish my degree, I plan on getting my teaching credential so I can teach 4th grade either in Lodi Unified or at Century Christian School in Lodi.

I was most recently in an admin clerk position at a quasi-government agency in Oakland. Before that, I was a chaplain's secretary in the Navy, with a last stop in Barstow (yeah, I know. lots of H2O in Barstow. LOL). I'm hoping to remain in Lodi, but am willing to either commute or re-locate if required to get a steady job.

If you are planning on getting your teaching credential you can make the same salary as a credentialed teacher while earning your credentials. There are a few programs at universities that have agreements with local schools which allow you to teach and get paid, I'm not sure if Sac State's credential program is one of those, but I do know that Cal State Stanislaus (CSUS) is. I too planned on becoming an elementary educator but had a child and needed to work rather than go to school, so after I graduated from Sac State I got a job with the state.

I AM NOT PROMOTING ANOTHER SCHOOL HERE, just trying to help in the best way I know how. The CSUS program that I am referring to is in Stockton at their satellite campus, the courses are in the evenings/night, that allows for their students to teach during the day.

As far as leads, I know that the state is still hiring. Even with the budget situation and the proposed furloughs, yes, they are still hiring. An admin position is a good way to get your foot in the door, especially for a student. They require that you type 40 wpm and pass a written exam, not really an exam, more like a 3rd grade spelling and punctuation test.

I hope that you find at least a little something helpful on this post, if you have any questions regarding any of the info or need to know where to find anything, let me know.
