Monday Games

Even Montana and Montana State will be unable to avoid Monday night games this season...

Montana and Montana State will no longer meet in Saturday basketball doubleheaders come next season.

The Big Sky schedule instead split up the men and women from both rival schools. One will play in Bozeman and one will play in Missoula. And both meetings will happen on Mondays in 2014.

No other Big Sky schools played two games in one venue, so accommodating the rivalry adjusted the schedule too much for other teams.

Montana's coaches understand why the switch needed to happen, but both showed more frustration about playing on a Monday.

"You don't want to play your rival and probably your biggest draw of the conference season on a Monday. I mean, the big thing is as coaches we want to make sure that it's fair and equitable to everybody. It looks that way. I think everybody plays at least one game on a Monday," Griz coach Wayne Tinkle said.

This really impacted the Southern Utah women last season and let's just say they were upset about it because it forced them to make needless travel adjustements.

This is a logical step and I congratulate the conference for finally enacting it.

From the schedules that have been released, I have noticed a pattern, I have noticed that the monday games are games against rivals.

Montana plays Montana State both times on Mondays

Weber State and Idaho State play both times on Mondays

And Eastern Washington is playing Portland State both times on Mondays

Rivalry games on Mondays? Not sure that helps the conference attendance wise. Rivalry games should be Saturday night games.
