I'd never cheer for the Grizzlies. Ever. Not even if there was a fire. I'd especially hate it if THEY are the team that finally takes down the Bison.
I wish they both could lose.
This.
I used to cheer for the Big Sky teams (including Montana) to do well when out of conference until I started reading eGriz and saw how fervently they cheer for us to do poorly. As for the Bizon, I'm sick of the hubris, the whining about 2010 and the general ugliness of every fan interaction I've had with them.
The irony? Both fan bases will swear they are the model for good fandom and all week long they will slurp each other about how their programs are FCS royalty. (Insert gagging sound effect here)!
eGriz doesn't represent the fanbase. Most Grizzly fans are good people.
That wasn't my experience. The one (and now only time) I visited their stadium, I was purposely given bad directions that caused me great discomfort. I'm VA disabled and unable to walk very far so when I was told the wrong direction and got halfway around the stadium I had to call security to bring a cart for assistance. When we went back by the tailgate group that had mis-directed me, they jeered and cat called. It was so bad the security guy apologized. That was after the game.
My husband and I didn't fair much better before the game when we got hassled going past some groups of fans because we're a biracial couple. We had intended to stay the night in Missoula but were made to feel so unsafe that we drove back to Spokane. I'm not one to over react to that sort of thing given that we were stationed all over the country, including the Deep South for the duration of our 30 year marriage. But I have to say in all honesty that I haven't experienced that much "discomfort" (as in wondering if some good old boys were going to run us off the road) since we made the mistake of stopping for lunch in Midland, Texas 25 years ago!
I'm sure you are right and the majority are fine folks but that trip combined with their rabid, often over the top, comments on-line have turned me off.
