Montana game

I liken this game to the 1980 USA vs. Soviet Union hockey game. The soviets had dominated hockey for 20 years. The USA wasn’t given a chance to win but they pulled off the miracle win. Coming into this game Montana has dominated the Big Sky for over a decade now. We go into this game with no one giving us a chance. For us this is our playoff game, this is our championship game; this is our chance to prove ourselves. This quote is similar to what Herb Brooks told that the USA hockey team on that great night and I put it in the context of being told to our team.

“Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that is what we have here tonight. One game, if we played them 10 times they might win 9, but not this game, not tonight, tonight we play with them, tonight we stay with them and we shut them down because we can, tonight we are the greatest football team in the Big Sky. This is your time, their time is done its over, and I am sick and tired hearing how about what a great football team Montana has. Screw em, this is your time, NOW GO OUT THERE AND TAKE IT.

Except US won the gold medal......

I don't think this is really a fair comparison because UM wins the Big Sky every year and.....oops...they just did, I guess that's 10 in a row now.

Yawn.

I agree that the Hockey Game was a bad comparison. However, I'm gonna havta break it to you, Monte...your record will have 3 blots: us, Montana State, and whoever beats you in the 1st round.
This season is laden with upsets at every level, so don't sit back and enjoy it just yet. Wait till AFTER the Orange and Black storm the field, the Blue and Gold storm the field, and whoever else storms the field. scUM is gonna go down, if not in football, then definitely in bball (I'll ensure that your teams don't make the free throws. I've already ruined 2-3 teams doing that.)

I like how in the same post that you guarantee the Griz will go down - you shy away and start on the basketball smack.

And I wouldn't count on that first round game. We found the first two rounds of the playoffs easier than the Big Sky....so I guess that's a twisted compliment to you.

But I like your little fantasy there. Whatever helps.

Hey man, I'm just making a guarantee. Montana will go down. Football, basketball, soccer, you name it. We'll fight like hell. This is a new Idaho State you'll be seeing. And I'll be in the stands and on the front lines of the games, wrecking havoc with your teams and getting the stands into the game. You have NO idea how much potential lies here in Pocatello. It's only a matter of time before they find out. And when they do, you'll find that the venues here (Holt, Reed, Davis...) will be absolute hell for opposing teams. Namely, you. scUM.

Super,
As someone who went to UM, and covered ISU, albeit briefly, until the school ponies up and gets some better facilities ISU will never consistently draw the type of recruits to push them past the Griz in any sport. It's not an opinion, it's a fact, and everybody associated with ISU knows it. Until the Bengal Village becomes more than just architectural plans, it isn't going to happen.

I guess you're right. We could stand to use better facilities. Let's just hope they're friendly to the atmosphere of the fans and not another business venture. As a proud grad of Poky High, I can attest to this. The Pit was by far the best place for a basketball game. Standing room only. Rival teams and fans were literally shoulder to shoulder with no room to wiggle. It was (and in my heart, still) my home for 2 years. The team could feed off the fans' emotions and carry themselves to victory. Then...they built that craphouse, The Palace. Nothing but gross commercial BS. It gives the other team too much comfort. No more crazy nights in an old gladiator pit, but more like a social atmosphere to gather and joke around. I'm sorry if I sound extreme, but y'know? Once I tasted true pride back on that court a few years back...I want everyone to have a taste of that.

That's why as much as I hate Montana, I give them props and even some respect (albeit with bashing) because that's the kind of devotion I want here. Too bad we're in BYU's and BSU's neck of the woods. Missoula has nothing BUT the Grizz.

Simply, I'm afraid of ISU doing the same thing. Too much attention given to the donors and wealthy people and not enough to encourage a real jungle for fans. Stadiums are SUPPOSED to be rowdy, vicious hellholes where the opposing team is given no comfort or quarter. That's my tangent for the night, lol!

(Whenever I'm working on a paper for PoliSci101, as I was a few minutes ago, I tend to get philisophical).

Ryan, I think our staff is making a committment for better facilities. At least now we have a very pro-athletics president who wants to make sure that the concept of Bengal Village comes into fruition. Unfortunately, in Idaho the state can't pony up some money for athletic facilities like they can in a state like New Mexico. And when you consider that our student body here turned down a bond to make improvements to Reed Gym, then do you think it may be likely that they would pass a bond to help build a new gym or make some improvements to the dome? If they're going to be using some of these facilities while in school here, why can't they try to make an effort to help out a little bit?

Realistically, I think our only option is to try to approach very wealthy alums and boosters of
ISU to help with facilities, and I'm not sure who they all are, but people like Marvin Lewis, Merrill Hoge, Jared Allen, and the CEO of Office Depot are just a few that come to mind. Currently the ISU Foundation is trying to raise about $1 million for the replacement of the turf at the dome, and equipment needed to maintain it. The next priority would be to build an outdoor practice field on the east side of the dome, for a cost of about $1.5 million, and after that we desperately need a women's softball stadium built on the south side of the dome, where the current practice field is, for a cost of another $1.5 million. And after that we need to raise between $15 and $20 million for a basketball gym, just on the north side of the dome. And after that then we'd probably try to raise about $20 million for improvements to the dome to bring it up to code, which would include improvements to lighting, heating, plumbing, a new sound system, etc. And we'd still need new tennis courts, coaches offices, and indoor practice facility, and other things built which are part of the plans of Bengal Village, so that we can be competitive in this league. So you can see, it isn't exactly cheap to try to get the things we desperately need, but I believe a fund-raising effort is just around the corner, and we will get the job done. And we do have very good staff members in place to ensure this gets done.

Right now ISU spends about $1.7 million each year for athletic scholarships, and the Bengal Foundation only covers about $350,000 out of this; the rest of the tab is picked up by the state. Too bad that the state can't help us with some nice facilities. Our total overall athletic budget is just over $7 million.

First of all - Pocatello has nothing BUT the Bengals....

But I see where your argument is going. In the "neck of the woods" is Montana State (obviously), Pac 10 Washington State, and Idaho --- which are both closer to Missoula than BYU or BSU is to Pocatello.....So much for your theory.

I like your effort though.

You're forgetting something, monte...people here are bandwagoners. Everyone here follows the big names, be it the Yankees, Red Sox, Lakers, USC, Texas, Florida, and such. People here follow those teams before supporting ISU. Not to mention the wave of BSU crap I've seen around here.

Why in God's name would anyone in Missoula ever support Idaho? Just wondering.
People here are BYU homers (the LDS factor) and BSU homers (BSU being an Idaho team). I mean, I'm from Ohio, I love the Buckeyes; I'm born and bred. But it's the Bengals first before I sing the Buckeye Battle Cry.

Another thing, sure MSU is in the neck of the woods. But WHY would anyone in Missoula even like MSU? Aren't they your biggest rival?!

This argument is weak. So you're saying that no one supports any major sports teams outside of Pocatello? Someone needs a serious reality check. Most Griz fans are also professional sports fans, and many Griz fans that show up to away games (and games in Missoula) come from across the state or places like Washington, Oregon and Idaho. What's your excuse there? And another thing, there are MSU/WSU/UI/UM, etc grads everywhere that cheer for their team. Not everyone was born a bred a Griz fan in Missoula or Western Montana for that matter - same with the amount of LDS members in Montana as well that cheer for BYU and USU.

My first suggestion to you would be to travel a little and you will understand what I'm talking about.

Not according to google, close but no cigar, but hey who is counting.
