Anyone catch the game on ESPN2 this afternoon. It was a simulcast of the TSN production. An interesting thing happened. The Roughriders won a home game 41-20 today. Former Sac State LBer Darnell Sankey was inappropriately called for a facemask; first, there was no evidence that a facemask penalty was committed by ANY Saskatchewan player, and second, it was physically impossible for Sankey to have done so as he was attempting an ankle tackle.
What really prompted this post was the interesting onside field goal play Saskatchewan attempted. This isn't something that would be legal south of the border, but I do like the premise. This most often happens as an onside punt, but apparently you can do it as a field goal, too. On any scrimmage kick, any offensive player aligned behind the kicker before the kick (and therefore "onside") is eligible to field the ball and keep possession. As is common in Canadian ball, the Roughriders sent two gunners in motion from the left to the right behind the kicker, and the holder rotated so that the kick was aimed toward the sideline at about the first down marker. Unfortunately, the kicker got a little excited and put a little too much mustard on the ball, and it carried out of bounds, prompting an "illegal kick out of bounds" penalty since it hadn't gone past the 15. The Alouettes got the ball at the spot the ball went out plus ten yards.
Interesting idea, but not something that would be legal here. They've got some crazy ideas in Canada that don't happen very often, but when they do, they make for a very exciting game....
