More Creative Accounting by UI

So I'm trying to understand this. UI has a deficit, and they may have to cut 3 sports. But if they add 3 sports, then they can take care of the deficit?

If it works, go for it. Maybe ISU should try the same thing since if the board approves it they couldn't only allow one state school to benefit from it.

On a related note, I don't know if this proposal is a direct result from it but I recall maybe last year (?) Idaho wanted the state board to give them more money for athletics but they didn't have a specific accounting on paper for what that money would be used for et al. The board said they'd consider it only after a more detailed accounting was offered. I don't know if Idaho ever did that or not.

The (Spokane) Spokesman-Review ran a story in today's paper regarding the subject. It sounds like ISU may explore it, if approved...

If Idaho’s proposal is approved, it could create a template for UI and other schools in the state to add sports. Staben points out UI has thriving club sports, and some could conceivably be brought under the umbrella of NCAA sports in the future.

Presidents of Boise State, Idaho State and Lewis-Clark State are all aware of Idaho’s plan, Staben said. Only one has expressed no desire to explore it for its institution, although Staben did not identify which president that was.

Staben said the idea probably held little interest for BSU, since its ability to raise athletics revenue and attract contributed funds puts it in a league beyond the other Idaho public higher education institutions.
