Mouse Davis blended Wishbone?

Alright guys I am in Fox Island Washington so I only saw 2 Portland State games last year, even though I'm a true Run and Shoot zealot and try to watch as many of their games as I can. So Iread a article in the 2008 Coach of the Year Clinic Book and he talked about trying to blend the Run and Shoot and Wishbone. Did he do that out of under center Doubleslot and motion a slotback into the backfield to be the pitch man or did he do the same thing out of the pistol/doubleslot that they are using right now? Anyone got a clip of this they can post?

That article would be an interesting read. I don't think I recall seeing the option ran last year with a slot back as the pitch man, but I could be wrong. We did run it with the QB as the pitch man, but I think it was only when we had our #3 QB in who is more mobile. We did see both formations that you provided, where we take our fullback out and replace with a slotback, but it was very limited. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of clips out there on youtube of our offensive sets last year. The majority of formations was the traditional run & shoot with the fullback in the backfield, and the QB in shotgun.

Well I know that he only ran the Doubleslot from under center and in shotgun. But what I'm really asking is if he ever used the triple option.

I never remember him running a triple option but I haven't seen every play of every game. Someone else might remember. I'm all for him blending in the spread option in addition to pure run and shoot. But Mouse is an old guy and he is a purist so I don't know how adaptable he would be now to blending in a triple option play. He resisted putting the QB into the shotgun formation half of last year. It just about killed us.

He said in the article that it ruined the execution of the offense. He talks about only being able to master one offense in that article. It was the same problem that all teams that have tried this have faced, it takes alot of dedication to run the triple option, at least the veer. But it also takes alot of dedication to have all of your recievers read the coverage and convert routes ever play like you do in the Run and Shoot. Hard to mesh two different practice intensive offenses.

So did Mouse author the article in question? I'm not sure if that was made clear in your original post.

Yes the article is what he said when speaking at the Nike 2008 Coach of the Year Clinics. All the clinics are put into articles in a book. I'm sure you can buy it on Amazon if you wanted to.
