Muse lands at Merced College

Former Buhach Colony High running back Dallon Muse plans to play for Merced College this season after being dismissed from the Sacramento State football team.

Muse told the Merced Sun-Star he accumulated three strikes for things like missing meetings and being late to class, prompting Hornet coach Marshall Sperbeck to cut the freshman loose.

Muse will have the familiarity of former teammates like Jarrell Davis to line up with at Merced.

Muse ran for 1,519 yards and 18 touchdowns last season.

I don't believe Sperbeck cut a three-star athlete loose for missing meetings and being late to class BEFORE THE SEMESTER EVEN STARTS... lol, so long kid...

I raely comment on football stuff because even though I am a fan, I'm not as knowledgeable about the game or the football program as a lot of the posters here. And Sperbeck seems to have the program headed in the right direction so I won't question his decision. But the maturity of teenagers is always baffling to me. Physically these kids look like strong mature young men. But there is a chemical in the brain that makes some kids just not get it, at lease not all at the same time.

Missing meetings are a definite no-no. I mean you'd have to have a helluvan excuse to miss one, and I definitely wouldn't tolerate it from an upper classman. But I'm not so sure I applaud the move like some of you have. A 3 star athlete is a gem for many reasons. Talent aside, the coaches can go out and recruit other 3 stars with confidence and say to a kid 'we already have (fill in the number) 3 star athletes on our roster, son.'

But more to my point and getting back to that chemical in the brain that allows us to mature (mentally and emotionally) in different timeframes, maybe this kid needed a bit more time. Maybe he has a more severe form of ADD or ADHD than most. Coming from a HS program where you have no meetings to a college program where you have several. Maybe he just couldn't adjust that fast.

I just hope he was dismissed because they felt he was a lost cause and he didn't show the attitude or behavoir to suggest he was worth the time to invest, and not just because he couldn't adjust to a new way of life in a matter of a couple of weeks.

If he was sincere and was trying, I'd have keep him and punished him in other ways, maybe RS him. But don't give up on him. Not a good message to send to the rest who are giving an honest effort, IMO.

I don't know this young man nor can I speak of this paticular situation, but similar issues like this happen on every college team. You are correct in saying that some kids mature faster than others, both mentally and physically...but with that said, it is more of a reason to start off in a JC.

I was on one of my sons recruiting visits and saw first hand a university make a recruit leave after a couple hours into his recruiting trip. The young man had flown up from SoCal and after acting very immature during an interview with current players on the team was immediately put back on a plane and sent on his way. This showed me that this coach and team understood that the character of the team counts more than the individual "characters".

I agree that there are some maturing these kids need to do and lessons to be learned, but missing meetings and/or practices can't be accepted...not when the University is paying for part or most of your education. Sound like he was given at least 2 warnings to change..the player even said he had 3 strikes...sounds like JC would be good for him to help understand structure...I wish him the best and that he matures and gets another shot either here or elsewhere.

Muse said he was released b/c he missed meetings and was late to class. It was probably something else as he could not have missed class as they haven't even started and he is a frosh. We will never hear from the school, too much liability, so it is best to move on and sign more 3 star DB's.

He might have been in the Summer Bridge program that some of the incoming freshman atend. It allows them to get ahead in class as well as workout with team for weight training and non coached workout...but you are right, we will never know what all that happened. Looks like Sac State gave him a good recomendation for the Merced coaches,

I think you have to look at this from a philosophical perspective and not just a chemical one. If Muse is not mature enough to handle being at this level of competition and stay focused, is it more harmful to keep him here or to let him go to a situation that better suits him? He could be a distraction to coaches and other players and at the same time, hurting his overall future.

That being said, who knows what really happened. Muse could have done something significantly worse than what he is stating and the school and him are keeping it under wraps. Sac State is on the cusp of taking a big step up this year and I wouldn't blame Sperbeck for not being tolerant of those who can't conform. Not to be overly dramatic, but this year is important for Sperbeck as a coach and Sac States football program. There are a lot of eyes on this team.

Sperbeck has not lead us astray thus far. In Marshall we trust!

I assume the coaches have an orientation for all incoming players that cover the University, football, and NCAA rules and requirements. Each player should know what is expected of them and what they must do to stay in good standing. It’s unfortunate that a player was lost, but what’s done is done and hopefully it works out for everyone including Muse.
