Must....get....Dano....Graves

Graves had better get a grasp of his accuracy, but given the combination of his passing AND his legs, the Big Sky had BETTER watch out if we snag him.

I'm assuming you haven't seen Dano Graves play much. One of his biggest strength's is his accuracy. Even Troy Taylor (who has worked with Graves, among other area QB's) has commented on this. I know his accuracy was a tad off during this past weekend's State Bowl Game, but that was to be expected considering the weather and poor field conditions. Normally, he is exceptionally accurate.

He is what Mr. Taylor had to say about him (prior to the start of this season):

"If Dano has the type of year he had last year (66 total touchdowns), he'll wind up being the greatest quarterback in section history. He's extremely competitive, really smart, a great runner, very accurate."

I spoke to a family member of Dano's about a month ago and he said that Dano was leaning towards Sac State and staying close to home... From what he told me yesterday, this late season push has increased his visibility and other schools are making a push, including UC Dungpile... :-/

I hope this is correct. I recently read an article in the SacBee or possibly the Folsom Telegraph where Dano was touting the Air Force Academy. If I recall correctly, he claimed his grandfather flew planes and he's always wanted to do the same (he loves the movie Top Gun). Up to now, I have only seen Sac St and Air Force listed as school's that have offered him a scholarship so the Academy seems to be a real threat to the Hornets chances at landing him.

BTW, as I was typing this, I found the article I was referring to. Here's the list of potential suitor's, along with Dano's comments:

Graves has received offers from Air Force and Sacramento State and several other schools have shown interest including Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly, San Jose State, Portland State, the University of San Diego, Cornell and Lewis & Clark.

“I’m extremely interested in Air Force because I like the movie Top Gun and my grandfather was a pilot,” Graves said. “I’m planning to go on a couple visits in January and by the end of January I’d like to know where I’m going.”

Sac Bee also indicated that he would be making a trip to Hawaii next month where his brother is on scholarship as a QB. Hawaii is recruiting him as a WR. There was no mention of Sac State in the Bee article I read, but I hope he is considering Sac State.

I played with Tony Trosin for 1988 season, which was arguably the best season Sac state football ever had. Tony was the starting quarterback for only the last eight games, including the playoffs. Tony Trosin threw 24 TDs, 2400 yards passing, and completed 59% of his passes in only eight games. At the time he was the most proficient passer Sac state ever had. It's not surprising that the Trosin boys are so talented. It would be great if they came to Sac state.

Dano Graves is about to be awarded the national player of the year award.

Sac State has as much chance of landing this kid as it does with building a new arena.

I believe that if Sac State somehow pulls this off and gets Dano... Possibly Babineaux follows.
Then it sets a precedent for Sac State and area players starting to stay home.

With what they have coming back next year. Say they win the Big Sky next year then the following year would be a bigger hawl possible from area recruits. Lets stay tuned...

I think we have the edge over PSU just due to proximity and fan base. Air Force I think is the biggest threat - his grandfather was a pilot - but who knows if he is interested in the military. Hawaii has not offered a scholly but his brother plays there. If Hawaii offers a scholarship it may seal it.

I think the large fan base may really pull in our favor. He'd have lots of fans from Day 1 coming to see his play. Everyone wins.

He could be the straw that stirs the local interest drink, indeed. This would be a HUGE pickup for Sperbeck... Can you imagine the Hornets landing the National Player of the year?! I know it's not quite like getting the hoops NPY, but still!!!

It will be tough, AFA is the AFA and Portland State is moving into a brand new 23,000 seat stadium.

I think we should do everything within our power to get him to stay home. He would be the player that catapults the program to the next level.

Today's article specifically on his recruitment...

http://www.sacbee.com/2011/01/13/3320701/national-award-in-hand-graves.html#

Sounds like the military committment might be weighing on him. Good to see his parents are so involved. Also, the fact that he's visiting us third is a good sign I think!

Post your support!

Dano,

Sac State would love to have you play in Hornet Stadium. Your family will be able to see you play in person at every home game as they would only be a short drive away. Coach Sperbeck and the football staff have done a tremendous job in laying the foundation for this Hornet program. The recent facility improvements for both athletics and education set the tone for a great experience available here at Sac State. The place is here, the time is now, and the boundless opportunity exists here. Make the commitment to Sac State and become the icon this region is looking for.

Sincerely,
Hornet alumni and fans everywhere.

From what I've read, Hawaii is recruiting him as a WR (as are some other schools). If that's the case, it all comes down to how badly he wants to play QB and if he's willing to play at a smaller school to get that chance. I believe Air Force and Sac St. were the first to recruit him to play QB (at least I hope Sperbeck isn't dumb enough to recruit him to play another position).

I hope Dano sees Sac St. as an opportunity to not only play QB, but also to transform an entire program. While it's certainly not a given that Dano will be an elite QB at the FCS level, he surely would be the most decorated recruit they've had in some time, if not ever. And if he succeeds at Sac St. he could be root cause of something big finally happening.

Hopefully the fact that Sperbeck showed belief in him a long time ago carries some weight. Let's cross our fingers.
