Here's a little story about how much playing in the title game has improved Eastern's recognition. The day after the game, I flew back to Spokane. The next morning, I flew to Atlanta for a week of business work. Halfway through the nonstop flight from Seattle, I walked back to the lavatory wearing my Eastern jacket. Two people recognized the logo and said "Go Eagles". Upon arrival Sunday night, somebody in the business center here at my hotel did the same thing. Last night I walked about eight blocks through snowy downtown Atlanta looking for food and beer. I found a good place (Hudson Grille on Peachtree), and as soon as I sat down, the guy sitting next to me says "Eastern Washington, right?". I say "Yeah" and he goes on for about ten minutes about what a great game it was, and how championships should be decided in a playoff. Now, I know plenty of you have similar stories, and I really don't care if I'm the only Eagle fan in America. But this kind of recognition wouldn't have been possible even a month ago.

I love that. :D

I think that the power of this championship run cannot be underestimated and will be felt well into the future. We always talk about ways to get more fans in the stands and I think it starts first with an energized student body. Students are the ones that add that excitement to the stadium and they are also the future alumni that will comeback to the stadium as fans for years.

The problem we now face largely has to do with the fact that most EWU alumni were apathetic fans as students and continue to be apathetic fans as alumni. That culture seems to be changed as a result of this football team; students are excited and proud to be Eagles. Roos Field will become the place to be on Saturdays instead of nothing better to do.

The future looks bright for the Eags.

how long you here ranger? I've probably got some time Friday for a celebratory drink. In other news, I just met a guy who runs a brewery here (5 Seasons) from my hometown of Goldendale, WA. This is a small world. Go Eagles!

Flew in Saturday night and had to leave this (Thursday) morning. Definitely would have taken you up if I had known!

speaking of Goldendale, we have several Eagle owned wineries ...one right near Goldendale is http://www.windrivercellars.com/

Do we really have EWU people who own some local wineries? Because I had a request for us to bottle "Inferno" red wine and start selling it by the case. I'm not a wine drinker but sounds solid to me.

Spent this week in Olympia, just got back to Spokane. I will be back there in two weeks, will work on getting our Eagles some love when I return. Lot of folks in Oly excited about our success, including the Governor. Tough session to find dollars for EWU but if we raise enough private dollars that will get their attention. Just unbelievable our next game is at Husky Stadium. What a great opportunity for us to show people EWU is a great school. We need 5,000 Eagle fans to attend. Or more. Maybe some of our Cougar friends who live in Seattle can come too. WSU has Idaho State in Pullman on Sep 3 but the Coug fans who can't make it to Pullman are welcome to join our bandwagon. Plenty of room.

That's cool. Washington's still a great state. Something I'm reminded of when traveling. You've got to be tougher or smarter than average to live and work in Eastern Washington. I loved going to school at Eastern (twice) because it taught me how to out-hustle, and outsmart those with a pedigree. Evidently, that education carries over to football too.

no question at all this year has put not only EWU football on the map, but the university as a whole. I don't think anyone can argue anymore that athletics is one of the best tools to attain recognition at a national level. Boise State was a junior college as recently as the 70's, but EVERYONE in the country knows about them now because of their smurf turf and the success they've had with their program. Academically, they're pretty similar to Eastern, so really the sky is the limit for a program like ours. Just need to build that fan base more and the rest will come!!!
