CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks carded a final-round 307 to capture the 2009 Big Sky Conference golf Championship with a 54-hole total of 914.
It was the sixth conference championship for Northern Arizona, the most in league history. The Lumberjacks held off a hard-charging Sacramento State team, which fired a final-round best 300 to finish six strokes back at 920. Northern Arizona opened on Monday with a 298, followed by a 309.
"I'm very proud of my team,'' said Northern Arizona coach Brad Bedortha, who guided NAU to its first league title since 2002. "Weber State played great the last two days and Sacramento State really put some pressure on us late today."
Northern Colorado freshman Ali Nelson shot a one-under-par 71 on Wednesday to claim medalist honors. Nelson, the first Bear to win a Big Sky Championship since the school joined the league in 2006, was the only player to break par in the tournament held at the Ocotillo Golf Resort. Nelson shot a 77 in the first round and followed with a 74 on Tuesday. Her score of 222 was three shots better than Northern Arizona sophomore Alexa Kim and Weber State sophomore Emily Copier.
"Last week when I was here I started putting well,'' said Nelson, the first freshman since 2005 to win medalist honors. "I started getting a good feel for the greens. I hit the ball well and putted well at the same time. Yesterday I had to grind it out to shoot a low score. I was all over the place. Today it was fairways and greens.''
Kim, who opened on Monday with an even-par 72, entered the final round tied with teammate Ali Carter for the individual lead. Kim shot a 77 on Wednesday to finish at 225. Carter closed with a 78 to finish with a 228. The team championship was especially sweet for Carter, a three-time All-Conference player who took the fall season off to student-teach in Germany.
"This is all I've ever wanted,'' Carter said. "This means the world too me. It took four years, but I was able to do it. I was keeping track of the team over in Germany. It was nice to come back and contribute and help the team out. To come back and win it is amazing.''
Sacramento State entered the final round tied with Weber State for second place. The Hornets shot a final-round 300 to close at 920. Brooke Green and Samantha Saffold each shot 72 in the final round. Green finished sixth overall at 228. Freshman of the Year Justine Chen tied for seventh with a 299.
Weber State, picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll, put together terrific rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday to take third. Weber State's 304 in the final round was one-shot better than Tuesday's score. Emily Copier led the Wildcats, tying for second at 225. Copier shot 73 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Montana sophomore Carissa Simmons recorded her second straight top-five finish. After placing third as a freshman, Simmons finished fifth at 227. Simmons helped Montana to a fourth-place finish.
The top five individuals were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Northern Arizona will represent the Big Sky Conference at the Western Regional May 7-9 in Tempe, Ariz.
