NAU coming to town

I feel like the announcers are being really harsh on Johnson today.

Also, our lines are just not at the same level as the past few years. I don’t think we’re a legit contender this spring.

I almost feel guilty about winning that game. NAU played hard and never gave up.
A few questions:
1) Was that really a fumble? The Weber player looked down on the replay.
2) Is Weber for real this year? Or are the COVID byes messing with their preparation and momentum?
3) Why did Johnson start at QB?
4) What was up with the defense this game? I know there were some injuries, but they struggled.

Grateful for the win!

Always glad for a win. Im not gonna say we didn't deserve to win because plays still have to be played. I will say however that this team is not playing like a contender. Not playing uo to their ranking. Credit NAU they had a good gameplan but it should never have come to that. This was supposed to be the offense's breakout game and outside of two drives looked pretty bad. 3 turnovers, two deep in enemy territory. Have a lot to clean up. Hope actually playing consecutive weeks will help this team.

No, the fumble was not a fumble. It was called a fumble and there was not a video angle that could prove otherwise.

Jury is still out.

Barron has an injured left wrist with no timeline for return.

Defense was down a few players with injuries, but still?????

I recorded the game, and one of the angles showed the knee hit and then on the second rollover the ball was stripped. It was not a fumble. It just wasn’t extremely obvious and required some close observation. Big Sky officiating needs help, they can’t even call made field goals correctly. 😂

I think ISU, SUU, and NAU are much better than people think. I expect all out battles the next two weeks.

I’m not sure what we do well after 3 games. The DBs are probably the strongest unit we have but it’s not like they’re locking people down. SUU game will be a dogfight.

What a rollercoaster ride.

So, so, so many missed calls, missed tackles, missed catches, missed reads, and two lead changes in 17 seconds. WOW

I'm glad I was there to see it in person.

As poorly as we played, we still pulled out the Hell Mary win. WOWs. :notworthy:

I will say this about Randall's play. He was good sometimes poor sometimes and okay for most of the game. He looked like he hasn't played in three years. Oh wait, he hasn't played in three years. His decision making will get much better from here on out. He just needed to get his feet wet.

QB is not ready to do the job at this level yet. Some of that has to do with the time off. He will get better as he continues to get some game time. Does anyone know when Barron will return. We need him. Randall is not a quick processor of things during a play. I have never seen any QB as hesitant to throw the ball as he was. Thank God he can run it because he isn't going to win any games with his passing until he improves dramatically. I think fast thinking and quick responses are natural for a good QB. Randall doesn't have either. He can get better at these things if he is properly coached. That means the QB coach has got to spend some time with him after practices and run him thru the plays over and over that he will be expected to execute during the game. Again, he can get better, but I doubt that he has these skills naturally and thus will never be great at it. Did anyone else notice that he never looked beyond the first option. Later in the game the coaches did not ask him to look down field. His throws were limited to quick outs with the exception of the final Hail Mary, which is another version of the don't have to think or pick out a receiver beyond the primary one. Future game plans with Randall at QB has to focus on passes that are almost automatic with a quick throw to a specified receiver or area. Even those passes require correct timing, but not to the degree that downfield passes involving multiple options do. Josh Davis was a man on that field today. We would not have even been close without what he brought to the field. As someone else mentioned, it does seem like there were a lot of 2-deep players not playing today. Injuries I suppose. Jay doesn't even bother to tell for each game what the 2 deep is. I suppose he is trying to not let the competition know exactly who will be playing in the game. Did anyone know that Bronson Barron had broken his hand before he did not take the field today?

The only thing I heard about the injury was that it was an injury to his left wrist. I didn't hear broken in any of the conversation. We probably won't hear much about when he will be back. We certainly didn't hear anything about when it happened, just 'in practice'. We haven't heard anything about when any of the defensive players will be back either. I don't think there is much that a coach can legally say about a players injuries or health. There are laws about that sort of thing. I don't expect to hear much. Next man up. :coffee:

Yes, it is obvious why Jay Hill selected Bronson Barron to be the starter at QB rather than Johnson. However, I feel that too many fans have been too quick to throw Randall under the bus. Remember he did move us down the field in two impressive drives that ended in touchdowns the first quarter including the 50 yard strike to Rocket (Rashid Shaheed.) He needs to adjust better to the adjustment the defense will make better. he also needs to make better and quicker decisions, but as Olds pointed out, it has been three years since he played and like olds, I think he will get better. The interception can be blamed on him, but the other tow turnovers cannot be blamed on Johnson. (One can be blamed on the referees.) Something that most fans fail to recognize is that before the three turnovers Weber moved the ball down the field and scoring opportunities were lost due to turnovers - not a failure to move the ball.

As bad as Johnson's performance was today, he pulled off the Hail Mary connection with Justin Malone to give us the miracle win and moved the ball effectively setting up what should have been scoring opportunities. His performance Saturday was way better than we ever got out of Jake Constantine.

Also, I need to give shout outs to my game MVP - Rocket Shaheed - and Josh Davis and of course Johnson & Justin Malone for the game winning Hail Mary. Davis averaged 8.8 yards per carry for a total of 141 years rushing which kept the ball moving and out of Wudtee's hands giving NAU far fewer scoring opportunities.
