NAU @ Sac State

Just tuned in and the Hornets have a 16-7 lead with 11:49 left in the 1st. Anyone know if NAU is playing its starters?

Well, NAU's starters are on the floor if that's what you mean by playing. Sacramento State looks like they've shown up with a purpose so far but NAU hasn't.

22-18 Hornet lead with 4:17 left in the first. NAU is starting to get things together now. The Hornets seem to have fallen asleep.

Thanks, yeah I was referring to if they had rested them for the entire game.

Well the Hornets let another double digit lead melt away. I have come to the conclusion that Katz and this team has no idea what to do when they are leading.

Thanks to a lose ball foul by Daniel with .7 seconds left, NAU drills 2 FT's to cut the Hornet lead by 1 and make it a 27-26 game at the half. It's just pathetic how easily they let NAU back into this one. It looks like this will be another close finish.

Sacramento State seems to be slowing the tempo down and that definitely isn't NAU's game. Is that the Hornet's usual approach?

Unfortunately yes. They just kind of run in circles and someone throws up a shot.

I saw Sacramento State a few times when I lived in Flagstaff and have watched quite a few games on bigskty.org since. Sacramento State had nowhere to go but up from last year and I see definitely see improvement from in this year's team. I don't know the statistics but they seem to play better defense than I remember.

There is a lot of parity in the Big Sky Conference and the only team I'd say is significantly ahead of the others is Weber State.

Yes there is much improvement from last year, there is no doubt about it. It's just hard to watch the Katz style of offense when as a student you got to watch a high tempo Hornets team run up and down the court with a full press and wide open offense...not to mention the play-makers who would hit a clutch 3 or make a remarkable dunk that would make you jump out of your seat...

The good news is the Hornets are only a few athletic players away from competing for a BSC conference birth...and a new arena away from competing for a BSC title.

36-35 Hornet lead with 15:46 left. As usual the refs are calling everything on everyone in the second half and completely taking over the tempo of the game.

NAU's only shot is if Cameron Jones starts to heat up.

NAU just doesn't have any fluidity tonight. I credit Sacramento for controlling the way the game's being played.

I can't get myself to complain much about the Big Sky Conference referees anymore as that's the way it has always been. Big-time, accomplished refs are going to go to big-time conferences. The only ref who ever made me twinge was Eric Curry and he's in the Mountain West (or WAC ??) conference now.

Hope Sac gets a new gym but I'm guessing state budget constraints will get in the way of that just like improvements are on the backburner in Flagstaff.

I'd be surprised if NAU loses this one. The only hope the Hornets had was to bury NAU when they had the chance. The Hornets just have trouble making a play when they need one, they just don't have the talent.

I have no idea what the financial strategy is for the new arena. It's on the books but that is about it. This down turn in the economy killed any chances of a corporate sponsor coming in and helping with the funding. President Gonzo just needs to find a way to get it built.

50-47 NAU with 9:12 left. The typical failure to execute the fundamentals is killing the Hornets again. NAU is destroying the Hornets on the offensive glass and getting easy second chance points.

Yes, the Hornets seem to have a hard time finishing.

NAU has played superb and horrible and if often occurs in the same half of the game this year. Nothing would suprise me as they're often a Jekyll and Hyde team.

President Gonzo...is that his given name or an allusion to his nose?

59-53 NAU with 4:16 left. It would be very close if the Hornets could hit their FT's. But at least Katz is in his comfort zone...coaching from behind.

NAU shoots free throws horribly, although tonight seems to be an anomaly so far, and the team has a maddening penchant of turning the ball over a lot.

I don't think this is over yet.
