NAU vs Bears

Ok, so last night I thought for sure our season was over against Montana St. I was so angry at the way they were playing defense for 3/4 of the game. Thank goodness they got their act together the last 10 minutes of the game. I think it's a miracle we pulled it out, but nonetheless we're in the semis.

UNC has a good team. They are the regular season champs for a reason. I'm happy for them. I'm glad it's them. It's a breath of fresh air. It's too bad we have to face them in the semis. I would prefer Weber or Montana in the semis just because it's so much more fun when we beat them 8) . We beat UNC at home by 11 and only lost to them by 1 at their place. I think we match up with them well. It will be a battle once again.

NAU has been so inconsistent this year. Sometimes (when they play defense) they look untouchable and can beat down ANY team in the big sky like when we took down Montana, and UNC. Then there are those times when even the worst team in the conf looks good against us (Idaho St.). The key to us playing well is defense. We are a great offensive team (except for free throws) but our defense is good one day, bad the next. Let's play good defense the remainder of the season and see what happens. Here's to the Jacks axing the Bears. May the best team win

Really happy I drove up for the game last night. That was possibly one of the best in-game environments I've ever seen for NAU basketball. Rolle was loud and the crowd, students and community alike, were into it. That is what NAU basketball can one day be. Way to go, Jacks.

PS - Will write more later, King.

I envy your life Mt. Jack. I was just watching it on TV. The crowd did sound incredibly loud and Mitch was going nuts every time Platt would nail one of his 3's in the come back. It was awesome to watch.

King -

I'll admit that I thought NAU was dead in the water. 30 minutes of listless basketball and a 16 point deficit didn't bode well at all. They stepped up the defensive intensity, the crowd woke up and became what I've always hoped they would, the Jacks hit more than a few clutch 3's and voila - the next thing I knew it was a tie game. Apart from watching the tourney games in Portland a few years ago and the NCAA tournament game down in Tucson in 2000, I'd have to say that last Saturday was probably the most fun I've had at an NAU game.

But the slate needs be wiped clean tomorrow night. No home court and altitude advantage. No preferential calls. A win over the home team will take NAU's best effort of the season. NAU has just as much of a shot as anyone in this league. If NAU keeps the rebounding at least close and plays team defense...why the hell not? They played UNC better on the road than most Big Sky teams. We shall see.

Go Jacks!

Man, sounds like the refs are helping UNC out big time. Jacks can't even breathe on their players and it's a foul. UNC player kicks Jones in the head while he's down and nothing called. Really? Everything is going UNC's way. It's getting ridiculous. Not only do we have to beat UNC, but the refs, and the crowd as well. It's going to be an uphill battle it looks like.

boooooooo, those fuc**** refs, This is unbelievable, WTF. it can't be this lopsided. Are you kidding? How many fouls do we have compared to them? Is this set up? At this point I don't doubt the Big Sky INSTRUCTED the refs to ensure UNC wins so that they don't lose money. No UNC in the final ensures that the conf loses money. I'm thinking this is an explanation for the discrepancy with the refs tonight. I believe in homecourt advantage, but the refs shouldn't be pulling for the home team. Their duty is to be neutral and call the game fair. I'm fine loosing, but loosing in a fair way when the other team beats you with their game not with the help of the refs :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

That hurt. It shouldn't (it's just a game...I do realize this) but it did. I'll mope around a bit tomorrow then when some 12th seed upsets a 5th seed next week, I'll be stoked again. But that was a hard way to lose for a talented, fun group of seniors to watch.

Ref'ing was suspect. (i.e. the 7th team foul on UNC should have resulted in the 1 and 1...didn't happen in the first half after Proctor's foul at the 11:23 mark...NAU didn't shoot free throws til the 9:18 mark) But again, it's always suspect in the Big Sky.

I can reasonably expect that the Bears fans would be apoplectic if NAU had shot 18 more free throws. But you know, the season's probably over now. UNC won the game and NAU didn't. I'm pointing directly at getting out-rebounded by 16 as the real culprit.

More later when time allows.

Sad they lost but proud of the effort put forth under questionable circumstances.

Come on NIT, CBI, or CIT. Go Jacks.
