NC simply cannot get the players they need to be successful

Now don't get me wrong I'm all for UNC athletics. But the football program can not get the players they need to be successful. Yes every recruiting class we roll around a stud and find a diamond in the rough ,but that's any school you go to. Let's be realistic and say that recruiting is too hard to promote to these kids that are on the tight rope wih CSU.Wyo and CU. Of course CU has the pick of the liter when it comes to this subject but losing kids to CSU and Wyo can no longer happen is we want to win. Downing recruited some great athletes. Eddy, King , Hewitt , Askew , Bigelow, and Davis in 2006 which were all 2-3 star players according to rivals Eddy, Bigelow and Askew were 3 stars before commiting to UNC which makes your recruiting level lower thus dropping in the rankings for whatever reason . 2007 Shapiro ,Orms are the only of the 2007 class that plays major roles. Let's be realistic we are lucky to get players we need. Askew Bigelow and Eddy all had intrest from CU and CSU as so did king and Davis. Askew was Commited to Wyo, Bigelow had offers from 3 schools CU being one of them , John Eddy was a blessing CSU ,CU had offered but he decied to be unselfish and stay at home. King was committed to Idaho State when they were actually a contender for the Big Sky Champion ship. We got really lucky to get those guys hats off to Cody Deti , and Darrel Perkins. Players now such as Alex Thompson, Brian Waggner,Andre Harris, Nick Hernon, Vj Holmes , Elliot Dorsey , Patrick Walker, Darrin McDonald, and Jace Davis are accidental players. All player we landed on accident those players should have never been here period! Walker played 1 1/2 years of football , decied not to go to Sac St. Davis had high school problems but was good enough to play in the Big XII (football or basketball)with his east signing mates. McDonald decided to come back to the CO after giving minor league baseball a shot. Andre Harris was a drop from Orgeon after the signing of LaMichale James. Idk how they landed Waggner to this day was on of the top JUCO qb's in the nations went to Flordia got hurt then beat out for the Job to Tebow. Herron was undersized ,and Holmes and Dorsey were both under looked or just not pushed out to schools enough. These players I just listed should have brought more than 3 win season here. We are looking to go DEFEATED this year because we don't have enough of players that just are inspired to win evey week. There is no nastiness on defense , no confidence on offense it just looks pathetic. Where are these players we are missing I'll tell you ! On the couch back at home. With kids not coming back to school and players simply not pushed or monitored enough in the classroom that they come here in one year and they are gone. Where is Fahinna and Winder. Def could use them in the trenches. Gainey was a stud at Wr his freshaman then never seen him again. Chad Carry ? Larry Barker? Wow those are ghost huh ? Yeah could have used them but since our coaches seemed like acedimcs were key then why were these players playing ? Then couldn't find them on the roster the next year. I know you cannot go to school for the players but I'm prety sure Terrell Pryor ,Derrick Rose and etc... all had people on their necks to go to class, and I'm smart enough to know that some of these athletes we see on tv are the sharpest in box. C'mon UNC get it right !!!!

UNC must change their mind set on recruiting. It needs to stray away from the homer recruiting and look out of states. Colorado has roughly 288 high schools, Florida has 603, California has 1,179. and Texas has 1,478! Yet how many UNC kids on the roster are from these other states....about 13 players. UNC's roster is roughly 70% colorado players. Both UC and CSU have only about 31% of their roster occupied by colorado players. And I think UNC must focus on JUCO players, especially in these other states. This helps fill a need quickly. You know how many kids in JUCO would jump at a chance to play college football. These kids wouldn't care what level they got to play at.

A lot has to do with the coach as well, Weber State has never been a successful football school, at one point not long ago, the University was considering Dropping the program.

Before McBride got here, we never challenged for the title, we never beat the likes of Montana, but McBride has been able to bring in recruits that Weber has never been able to get before, and they buy into his system, which makes his job easier.

A good recruiting coach is what you guys need, a coach that can make UNC look attractive.

That's a very interesting take. And I agree to a certain extent. UNC has the luxury of being the only school in the state at the 1AA (or FCS) level. As we all know, this state doesn't produce a ton of major 1A talent, but a lot of Division II caliber guys. I do believe though, that there are some players who are "tweeners" in that large talent gap, and those are the type of guys UNC has tried to get. I agree that I don't think you can be a succesful program in a powerhouse conference like the Big Sky by recruiting a majority of Colorado guys. This is where I think Coach Collins will have a big impact. It seems like he has a pipeline to the Miami area, which produces a wealth of talent. As well as some California connections. Those are the types of guys we need to find. Also, it's no secret that this team has been severely outsized on the offensive and defensive lines ever since they made the transition up to this level. In that area, I would like to see this program be able to recruit this region that the Big Sky lies in. I think you can find some good big ol' boys in the states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming etc. (generally speaking of course) Obviously, this will be tough to do, trying to convince some kids to come to UNC over a Montana or Montana State, but I think the possibilities are there.
Coach Collins is like a guy who is trying to start up a company, in order to be successful in the early-going to get this thing off of the ground, he has to find kids that "buy in" and believe in the product that he's trying to sell. You need to find guys with character in that aspect, guys who don't want to go to an already established program, but get guys who want to be apart of something bigger... a turnaround of a once proud program. If anyone has the opportunity to talk to coach for any length of time, he is the type of guy you would want to play for, and battle for. And I hope these guys that they are targeting on the recruiting trail feel the same way. And another thing that shouldn't be overlooked, is that Greeley really isn't a bad place "in the middle of nowhere" like some of these other college towns in the Big Sky is. Greeley itself might be a smaller community, but there are so many things in close driving range (Ft. Collins, Denver, Boulder etc.) which could attract kids. And I'm not sure if many of you are still living around here in Greeley, but this place is growing into a college town, kids have places to go now on a Friday or Saturday night instead of hanging out at somebody's house. This place is blossoming, it's in the middle of becoming something bigger, and I have a feeling that is the kind of pitch this coaching staff is using to attract these talented young players from all over in recruiting.

Maybe someone can confirm but I think for out of state recruits they have to account for out of state tuition for that scholarship so I'm guessing those are limited...

Collins and his staff are going to have to go out and recruit like they've never recruited before, it'll be interesting to see what the off-season will bring.

I've liked his recruiting philosophy so far, he's talked about getting guys that FBS schools passed on. I've always thought CO had some decent talent, you have to dig a little. I agree they need to keep bringing in out of state kids. Collins brought in some kids from FL in, so maybe he can bring some more. I think he needs to land a few big recruits that could step in right away.

Well the teams in the 90's I believe could at least win more than one or two games at this level, we beat Montana State in their house when we were still DII (2002 I think) so I think there is talent there if it can be cultivated.
