NDSU Post Game reflections

It did seem like they were trying to hit Gubrud on every play even if they were late. Regardless, it won't change the outcome of the game. Best to just move on and get ready for UNI.

I'm more upset that it wasn't being called more. Along with the late hits, there was widespread holding on virtually every play. They finally started to call it in the second half, but it had already been going on all game long.

It didn't look all that dirty to me. Can you give some concrete examples? The refs were pretty bad, but they were pretty evenly bad I thought.

Terrible officiating on both sides (the Bourne TD comes to mind) but I don't think NDSU was trying to be cheap.

The three TO's is what cost us the game - yeah, we had to take our shots, but you're not going to win a ton of games being -3 in the TO margin. Who knows what would have happened had we not missed that XP. Doh! Let's hope Coop's good to go next week.

Overall, I thought we played ok. I was surprised that we couldn't get more pressure on their QB on obvious passing downs. All the long 3rd down conversions really hurt us.

The offense was pretty good, but we needed to take care of the ball better to beat the best team in FCS. Too many penalties, too many mental mistakes.

We're still a good team.

Too many turnovers, too many yards given up. It's a tough pill to swallow that we've played so well thus far and are only .500.

For what it's worth, I didn't think NDSU was dirty at all. Just a physical football team.

The refs had a terrible day, though. It's not an situation where we got jobbed, but they seemed to get every close call in their favor. How many times did a close call "stand" after review? All of those were basically 50/50 calls and we didn't get 'em.

Water under the bridge now, we're 1-1 and need to get a win next week to get back on course.

you must have missed all the late hits to our QB.

And don't even get me started on the refs. Simply the worst I have ever seen. The TD catch that was called back, and then upheld on review was fucking atrocious.

That was a frustrating way to lose. The officiating was some of the worst I have seen, but like everyone has mentioned, you simply can't turn the ball over that many times. It'd be cool to play these guys again this year.

Yes, the refs seemed lost out there. I joked with NDSU fans that the MVFC mistakenly sent a soccer crew to a football game and they were learning the rules ;) .
The reviews were ridiculous. I wish I knew more what they were thinking. Two reviewed plays were obviously in our favor but were not reversed. 1 mattered, 1 we got a TD eventually so did did not matter.
Typical homer calls. There were a number of holding and roughing calls that could have been made but were not, I think the line judge's name must be Homer somebody!!
Our guys left it all on the field. Kudos to every Eagle that played, they should have no regrets. GOOD game guys!!
When the coaches have a chance to review film I would love to know what they would have to do over again. From what I saw, I would like to see Gage throw it more and attempt to run less. IMO we tried to get the ball into Cooper hands too much. We really have a lot of play makers and the opposition if looking for Cooper. I would have liked to see more of the short passes and runs to maintain ball control.
I am impressed with Vic's comments through out the summer. He has been telling us this team is going to be GOOD. You were right Vic. With this game as learning experience Why would we lose another game??

I'm also proud of the team. We didn't play a great game but were still it in the end on the road against a very good team. We'll bounce back.

Alright, I went out and got some sushi with the wife and I feel better. Still bitter, but better.

Here are some things that I noticed about the game.

Offense

Let's start with Gage Gubrud. This game reminded me of the last time that we brought a rising star, fresh off a great win to face a loud and intense defense. Vernon Adams vs Montana State. We won that game, but only because special teams were able to bail us out. VA was a dear in the headlights and made poor decisions left and right. Gage Gubrud started this game like a deer in the headlights. It seems like he started this game going through progressions looking for those easy decisions that Washington State gave him. North Dakota State is no such monster, though. They give nothing easily. The difference between Vernon Adams and Gage Gubrud is that Gage didn't wait for the rest of the team to bail him out. He rose to the occasion and made some very difficult throws. NDSU had a way of having a guy in the area for every throw. There were almost no uncontested catches. Gage often found his target in triple coverages. I am very happy with Gage's performance, despite the three interceptions.

Our wide receiving corps is the best in the nation. They went out and proved that tonight. All week, we heard about how if NDSU contained Kupp, it would be over for EWU. Well, they contained Kupp in the most effective way possible, by putting him on the sideline. Yet, our wide receiving corps went out and played like the freak athletes they are. I would even go further and say they played BETTER. Our overreliance on Kupp is actually slightly hindering. He is always at the top of progressions, despite every defense targetting him. Also, Shaq Hill needs to make those catches.

Offensive line had a daunting task and performed admirably. We have an amazing group that is going to carry the future of Eastern Washington very very far. Jerrod needs to quit going down field!

Defense

As is tradition, our defense looked like the sore spot for Eastern Washington. However, I am willing to give the coaching staff a pass, and possibly even a thumbs up. Our young defense has improved. Improved enough that we don't need to rely entirely on the offense. Sure, this game was a bit of a shootout, but our defense made a lot of stops where it mattered. Our offense was the one who put NDSU in position to score, not the defense (as seen by the three turnovers by the offense). NDSU had more opportunities to score and that means...

How about this for a fact, our defense stopped NDSU from scoring more than NDSU stopped EWU from scoring

Our defensive line played admirably, but I think NDSU's offensive line was their best offensive tool. And they still needed to cut block and hold all day long. There were times I noticed absolutely no pressure, but our line wasn't helped by the lack of blitz packages (understandable going against a run first offense).

The sorest spot I saw was from the safety position. I am amazed at how many times they let the NDSU wide receiver get in front of them, when Stick didn't have the arm to huck it accurately down field. Yet, they consistently let them get those 10-15 yard throws.

Special Teams

This is our weakest unit. Our punter is our lone bright spot, for he has a hell of a leg. Alcobendas is decent at PATS, but doesn't have a powerful enough leg to put it in the backfield. Our coverage is terrible and our returns are even worse. Didn't we used to put starters on the field for special teams? They look like a bunch of true freshman out there.

Our kicking has been pretty iffy so far. I was wondering why we didn't just try and go for another pass play instead of trying to kick such a long field goal. It seems like our punter is the only one who has a chance from farther than 40 yards, and he's hit and miss.

Special teams is the weak link this year. We can't seem to find a kicker than can make a field goal at any distance and our coverage has looked really bad. No complaints on punting.
