Alright, I went out and got some sushi with the wife and I feel better. Still bitter, but better.
Here are some things that I noticed about the game.
Offense
Let's start with Gage Gubrud. This game reminded me of the last time that we brought a rising star, fresh off a great win to face a loud and intense defense. Vernon Adams vs Montana State. We won that game, but only because special teams were able to bail us out. VA was a dear in the headlights and made poor decisions left and right. Gage Gubrud started this game like a deer in the headlights. It seems like he started this game going through progressions looking for those easy decisions that Washington State gave him. North Dakota State is no such monster, though. They give nothing easily. The difference between Vernon Adams and Gage Gubrud is that Gage didn't wait for the rest of the team to bail him out. He rose to the occasion and made some very difficult throws. NDSU had a way of having a guy in the area for every throw. There were almost no uncontested catches. Gage often found his target in triple coverages. I am very happy with Gage's performance, despite the three interceptions.
Our wide receiving corps is the best in the nation. They went out and proved that tonight. All week, we heard about how if NDSU contained Kupp, it would be over for EWU. Well, they contained Kupp in the most effective way possible, by putting him on the sideline. Yet, our wide receiving corps went out and played like the freak athletes they are. I would even go further and say they played BETTER. Our overreliance on Kupp is actually slightly hindering. He is always at the top of progressions, despite every defense targetting him. Also, Shaq Hill needs to make those catches.
Offensive line had a daunting task and performed admirably. We have an amazing group that is going to carry the future of Eastern Washington very very far. Jerrod needs to quit going down field!
Defense
As is tradition, our defense looked like the sore spot for Eastern Washington. However, I am willing to give the coaching staff a pass, and possibly even a thumbs up. Our young defense has improved. Improved enough that we don't need to rely entirely on the offense. Sure, this game was a bit of a shootout, but our defense made a lot of stops where it mattered. Our offense was the one who put NDSU in position to score, not the defense (as seen by the three turnovers by the offense). NDSU had more opportunities to score and that means...
How about this for a fact, our defense stopped NDSU from scoring more than NDSU stopped EWU from scoring
Our defensive line played admirably, but I think NDSU's offensive line was their best offensive tool. And they still needed to cut block and hold all day long. There were times I noticed absolutely no pressure, but our line wasn't helped by the lack of blitz packages (understandable going against a run first offense).
The sorest spot I saw was from the safety position. I am amazed at how many times they let the NDSU wide receiver get in front of them, when Stick didn't have the arm to huck it accurately down field. Yet, they consistently let them get those 10-15 yard throws.
Special Teams
This is our weakest unit. Our punter is our lone bright spot, for he has a hell of a leg. Alcobendas is decent at PATS, but doesn't have a powerful enough leg to put it in the backfield. Our coverage is terrible and our returns are even worse. Didn't we used to put starters on the field for special teams? They look like a bunch of true freshman out there.
