Nevada Game

Who is going to the Nevada game? I think that we will be very competitive in this game but most likely will lose in a shootout. If the game is tied or within 7 going into the 4th guarter, I like our chances. I think Taiwan Jones will have a huge day and make people take notice on the national level. I also think Bo Levi will look impressive spreading the ball around to many capable receivers as well. The big question will be our defense but I am excited about playing Nevada rather than Oregon State. Feel free to chime in and get things rolling for the opening game. Go Eagles!!!

This team will not be going down there to lose ! I'm thinking there's alot more to THIS game then what it appears. A good showing will not be good enough! HOWEVER, I have to agree with you on the defense, it will all come down to containment ! We can score but can we stop Them from scoring ?

Yeah, this will be a really hard one for the Eags to win. In the past we have been very poor playing against physical ball control type teams that run the ball. But who knows, if we can force a couple to's and score off them maybe we could put them in a position where they have to pass the ball a lot. I'm just hoping for a good showing in this one with no injuries because it'll take a perfect game played to win it.

I am aware its gonna take a HUGE effort to pull this one off HOWEVER, its the first game of the year and stranger things have happened. Might catch'em napping, they may think its gonna be a walk in the park and wont start running until it's to late !! GO EAGS,yes I will be there. PS They can put points up in a hurry ! yikes !!!

I plan on being there, checked into Southwest Air from Spokane and saw plenty of flights. Perfect date to gather Eagle fans and support our team with a Thursday night game. Plan on flying home Friday AM and spending the holiday weekend at the lake. CWU game at Qwest is the next weekend and then our home opener in Cheney against Montana on Sep 18. This is the year we can rally more EWU fans to the UM game than the Griz. Join the EAA and buy your Griz tickets today. Let's make this a true home game for the Eags and open Big Sky play 1-0!

It'd be nice to get 2-3k more Eagle than Montana fans out for the first game on the red turf, but the fact that the game is before school even starts in Cheney does not bode well. I know the school doesn't control conference scheduling, but the date of this game is less than ideal.

Greetings! Just wanted to extend an invitation for you folks to visit our board so we can (hopefully) make it through the summer doldrums together.

Also, any of you coming down for the game might be interested in the Nugget Rib Cook-off happening that same weekend.

I'm flying in from Houston. Will not miss the opener and feel we have a good chance at getting National attention by winning this game. Nevada can not defend the spread. If our defense can hold them and spread out the clock it is our advantage. Our offense can strike quick and often. Go Eagles. Wow...My bad. I don't know what I was thinking.

Welcome to the board PackBacker! Could you tell us more about the team you guys have returning?

I'll do my best:

On offense, most everyone is back except for former RB Luke Lippincott. He, Vai Taua and Colin Kaepernick became the first trio in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards each in the same season. A couple of linemen are also gone from last year's team, but given the offense's successes the last few years it's not anticipated to be much different than business as usual in that area. Thanks to some new additions, the receiving corps is expected to play much more of a role in the offense than before, lending (hopefully) to a truly balanced and dangerous offense.

The defense loses a couple of NFL free agents in Kevin Basped (DE) and Jonathon Amaya (SS), and a couple of other DBs. And even with all the criticism and scorn they've received (most of it justified), we're allowing ourselves to be a little optimistic at their prospects for noticeable improvement this year. The cornerbacks will be bolstered with some instant impact type of talent, the defensive line is bigger and deeper than in previous years, and even the safeties have looked really good so far. They kept the first team offense out of the end zone in the spring game back in April. Simply put, when the fastest player on your team is a defensive end (Dontay Moch, a probable NFL draft pick next year), it's hard not to be a little excited at the possibilities.

The team will be breaking in new offensive and defensive coordinators. Andy Buh came to Nevada from Stanford to take over the defense, and the feeling so far is that he'll have the defense playing much more within their means than their last coordinator (new PSU coach Nigel Burton) did. We're not expecting to see TCU's defense overnight, but we think the unit as a whole will at least be competent.

Overall, the team is deep and peppered with NFL-caliber talent at several positions. This is definitely a pressure-filled season with a lot of expectations -- a good season (9 or 10 wins for most of us) would do a lot not only for the athletic department's bottom line, but to silence many of the program's critics. After how 2009 ended, Coach Ault knows what will be expected of his team, and I know our board is looking towards 2010 with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety.

Thanks Backer!

I don't expect EWU to come away with a W, but I'm hoping we can catch your pack snoozing. We gave Colorado quite the scare two years ago and should've won that game. Any info about EWU that Nevada fans would like to know, feel free to ask.

Some names you'll come to know September 2:

All-American RB Taiwan Jones (#22)... 4.3 speed and averaged 7.5 yards a carry in 2009 as a sophmore. Other stats in my sig. Only guy who ever beat him in track in HS was a guy named Jahvid Best. ;)

All-American LB J.C. Sherritt (#4)... 170 tackles last year. 'Nough said.

DT Renard Williams (#98)... He's got the size (6'2, 300lbs) to put pressure on ANY college team's O-line, FBS or not. He had 9 sacks, 5 QBHs and 1 forced fumble in 2009, his first year as a full-time starter. Those numbers will only improve this year.

6'5" WR Brandon Kaufman (#88)... talented young receiver who's emerging as SMU transfer and EWU starting QB Bo Levi Mitchell's favorite receiver. Hope you have some big CBs. Most of our other WRs are over 6-foot, minus one or two guys.

And of course QB BLM (#9). His numbers weren't great at SMU, but under a more familiar offense here at EWU like he played in HS, and down a level, he has the potential to do great things. He certainly won't be intimidated coming to Reno.

September can't come soon enough!
