New coach??????????

Do you wonder if the new coach is still involved in either the NCAA or NIT tournament thus the lack of info out of the athletic dept.???

Hey Vic;
You usually have some good inside scoop, what are you hearing about a new coach? Anyone been on campus for interviews?

Clawman,
I was on Campus a couple of days ago, everything is very quiet. Spoke to someone this morning by phone, nothing is known. This is very secret this time. I remembered the four finalist were available for questioning in Showalter Hall four years ago. I did attend and ask questions. Will have to wait and see. Vic

This morning's Review reports that Ray Giocoletti (who appeared to be the first choice) has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching job at Northern Illinois Univ. Am I reading between the lines that this means he has been given the Eastern job? The NIU job no doubt pays more than Eastern can offer, but I've heard that he would like to stay in the Spokane area - his wife has a business in Cheney? I know there are some Eagle boosters who do not want him back, because of hard feelings over Burns' firing, but he was a winner in Cheney (was playing Oklahoma State in the NCAAs exciting?). Would we get a pipeline to Few's rejects?

The list of boosters/employees, etc. who would love it if Ray Giacoletti came back to EWU is a LOT longer than the list of those who are mad at him for defending one of his best friends. The bigger questions are whether Coach Giac wants the job and whether EWU can afford it if he does.

It's going to be interesting to see who ends up with this job. It would be nice to know who is interested and the current time frame for hiring a coach, but with the beat writer of the newspaper not being a "go-getter", AD Chaves being very guarded with information and the general apathy over the basketball program, it's likely we won't know anything until the university announces a press conference to name the new coach.

It would be nice to know who is involved in this decision. Obviously, AD Chaves and President Arevalo are. But who else? Maybe not names, but a number of people would be nice. Are public interviews with finalists part of the plan?

What is the wish list for the ideal candidate? Does a D-1 assistant have an edge over a lower division head coach who has not coached at the D-1 level? How important is it for the new coach to be able to recruit in Washington state and the Northwest? Should the new coach be comfortable with raising money? Will there be pressure to make a minority hire? I think there are only two minority coaches on the entire athletic department staff (Hunter and Adams with football) and only three women head coaches.

My gut is telling me four things and I don't know if I trust any of them being right. In no particular order:

1. The job will go to someone most of us never heard of, who has a past connection to AD Chaves.
2. The job will go to the best suited minority applicant.
3. It's coach Giac's job if he wants to take it.
4. Rodney Stuckey will make the decision by promising a big donation if his favorite is hired.

We will see. My guess is it should happen in the next week or two. And if it doesn't happen in that time, then I will be worried that they are not finding any takers among the best candidates.

There is no way I see Giacoletti coming back. The old saying, "You can't go home again." rings very true in this situation. He stands absolutely nothing to gain by coming back to EWU UNLESS he can't stand not being a head coach and this is the best offer he can get.

Whoever we hire has to have extensive ties to the northwest for not only recruiting but rebuilding the once proud EWU basketball camps. As a kid, EWU Cage Camps under Coach Krause were THE CAMP to be at and put Eastern on the map. The fact that we no longer have ANY camp is a sign of how far the program has fallen.

I heard there are talks that Clint Hull the coach at SCC could be interviewed. I think this would be a great thing, he also is a former player, young with energy, why not? Any truth to this?

Steve Bergum is a terrific beat writer. The Spokesman, like most daily newspapers throughout the country is getting killed, printing less articles, and if memory serves is even cutting mileage expenses to Cheney.

I don't see coach Giac coming back, I think he will have to take a pay cut from a zags asst. to eastern head coach, but correct me if I'm wrong, plus he did rub some people the wrong way after he left, although he was just defending a friend.

He is from N. Ill area so taking his name out of the running for that job means he most likely wants to stay in the NW.

Personally, I like the guy and he did a nice job at Eastern. If we are able to snag him, maybe he can bring some of the Zag kids over here as they have a big time freshman class coming in and no room for all those kids there.

The program can go nowhere but up...so i'm looking forward to the new coach, who ever it may be.

I don't have a problem with his writing, he is a fine writer. I enjoy what he writes each week. My point is that he is not going to dig around and spend time and effort to find facts that are not easily found. If memory serves, his predecessor on the beat did a lot of work on potential candidates and found the connection between Earlywine and Westfall. If no one is doing that work and if AD Chaves isn't talking, then we won't know anything until there is an announcement.

Yes, Trimmer was excellent also. Again, my sense of the coverage issue has more to do with what he gets assigned to and how willing the Spokesman is to send him out to Cheney to dig around. His time and effort cost the paper money, and with limited article space the intrigue surrounding the coaching hire of struggling local program may not be all that much of a high quality target. Don't get me wrong though, I'd of course love to see more coverage but I think it boils down to an editorial decision.

On a seperate note related to Giac, I don't think Chaves or much of the current administration were around to experience the bad blood. But I agree that it would be a suprise if he were to take the job. It seems like a sideways step at best.

I don't know if Ray G. is interested in EWU but remember there are only a 100 plus D 1 head coaching jobs in the country, but several thousand coaches. The Big Sky gets an auto bid to the Dance, so our opening is a VERY BIG DEAL to the coaches around the country. Our AD will have had lots and I mean lots of interest.
Coaches like Ray G. and others will look at the talent and chances of getting to the dance as a very big deal. The big payday comes later and Ray G. has already had one. I am sure half of the Pac 12 assistants have sent apps. They did last time, plus assistants in the Big Sky and all over the Mountain West.

I for one would love to see Coach Ray back at Eastern. I talked to him at Tony C's Funeral and he said that his days at EWU were some of the best he has had as a Coach.

Quit being an "Ass Kisser", should he Ray G. come back, I will boycott Basketball Games. I have no use for this coach after he ran the University down because of Burns firing. I know most don't care what I do,or say, but I will express my own opinion. They are like butt holes, we all have on, I hope?

Vic, If you do that, it will cut our attendance in half at the mens games.
Thanks, I don't know that I have ever been known as an Ass Kisser. The AD will not even talk to me. Have you told Chaves your ideas about who our new coach should be, he likes input from others you know. Who ever our new coach is I sure hope he has connection with NW high school coaches, I would love to have our H.S. kids back on the floor, and the big summer camps back on campus. After my own ass your second Vic, love.
Maybe we will know next week?

I apologize for what I called you. I haven't seen the AD in the past two weeks. I wouldn't give anyinput, they will make their own decisions. You made me  when you said if I boycott the MBB Games will cut our attendance in half. ;)

You know I don't talk about people, :notworthy: , when other personnel talk our our University, it frustrates me very much. I am sure you know what went on four years ago with all the firing that took place. W/O mentioning any names. So much for that. Honestly, I apologize for my name calliing.  Be 8-) . Vic
