New coaches

Coach Sperbeck may have waited too long to replace his assistant coaches. The Gov is going to put a freeze on all new state employment and not replace vacant positions. Just wait and see!
Next season is going to be a tough one with three less coaches.

FWIW:
What about the state’s job freeze? Capitol Weekly’s advertisement states, “[E]ven during a job freeze supervisors can ask for their positions to be exempt from the freeze.” The ad also states, “[O]ver 50% of the positions listed are exempt because of the extreme need or the need of a special skill.”
According to Jolley, Capitol Weekly exaggerates available state jobs. She explained that there is no state job freeze currently in place. Jolley said however, that the governor did order state agencies to reduce agency payrolls by 5 percent, figuring that this could be achieved through attrition.

I just grabbed the first article that popped up on a Google search. This one is from late May. I was surprised at how many old articles and info came up when I searched it. Who knows what really is going on?

The hiring freeze does not affect coaches at any of the CSU's or UC's. Nothing to worry about here.
SHA is correct, there is nothing to worry about, the new coaches are already hired. We're good to go.....

Here are the new coaches:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team continued its offseason movement with the addition of four coaches, it was announced by Hornet head coach Marshall Sperbeck.

"We are excited to welcome these coaches to our staff," Sperbeck said. "They each will bring new ideas which should help us continue to improve on both sides of the ball."

The group is comprised of offensive coaches Bush Hamdan and Fred Kelley and defensive coaches Andy Avalos and Shawn Howe.

Looks like Sperbeck brought on some guys with expereince both on and off the field and from various backgrounds.

Football scoops shows Coach Shawn Howe is now at USC. Looks like Sperbeck knows talent when he see it! Confident he will replace him with another great coach!

Crazy. That was a quick turnaround. I wondered why two coaches with DL experience were hired. I guess they figure Howe would leave if offered at a FBS school.
USC: We have learned that Shawn Howe has accepted the defensive quality control job at USC. Howe recently left Tennessee to join the Sacramento State staff as defensive line coach. Now, he has joined the USC staff.

When I first saw his job history last week, it struck me how much he had jumped around recently. A year here, a year there. I didn’t think it would evolve in to this much of a quick change!

While I'm glad Sperbeck can recognize talent, losing a guy a couple of weeks later doesn't do much for the program. What happens now? Are the pickings going to be pretty thin at this stage trying to find a D-line coach equivalent to the one that was fired, or his now departed replacement?

Whatever happened that made Sperbeck determine Coach O had to go, it certainly wasn't due to incompetence. While the HC must of course have subordinates in tune with his philosophy and direction, part of the challenge of leading an organization effectively is to get talented people with strong egos to work well together towards a common goal. Coach O's sudden firing had an impulsive appearance to it, not a well thought out strategic move.

Would you have to be a Pollyanna to hope that the differences weren't so serious that they could work out an arrangement for at least this season? It would take some manly sh*t eating on both their parts, but stranger things have happened. Look at the Billy Martin saga. OK, maybe that's not a good example.

Avalos has experience as DL coach and my guess is he will be mover there. Sperbeck will still have to find one more coach.
Avalos comes to Sacramento State from Nebraska Kearney where he was the team's defensive line coach for the past two seasons. In his first year (2009), the Loper defense led NCAA Div. II with 47 sacks, including 29.5 from the defensive line. The defense also led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in points allowed (18.1 per game) and had two players earn all-region honors. Last season, he coached Mason Brodine to the UNK career sacks mark.

Coach O is gone. It’s long past time to get over it. While I think we can all agree the whole situation could have been handled better, it is Sperbecks job to get this program to the next level. If he felt/thought the coaches he had at the time weren’t living up to the task, it’s Sperbeck’s responsibility to make changes. We shall see how it works out.

From Football Scoop:

Sacramento State: We hear former University of Minnesota defensive quality control Jordan Gigli has accepted the defensive line job. Another source tells us that Tyler Almond will join the staff as a defensive assistant.

Prior to coming to the Hornets, Gigli was a defensive assistant for the University of Minnesota for four seasons (2007-10) where he worked primarily with the defensive line. During his time with the Golden Gophers, Gigli was responsible for the initial scouting report for all opponents and also oversaw the team's defensive and special teams scout teams. He also coached the team's kickers, punters and long snappers.

Very unimpressive resume’. Minnesota’s record while he was an assistant there:
  • • 2007: 1-11, Last in the B-10 in yards/game allowed defense, last in rush defense
    • 2008: 7-5, 10th in the B-10 in yards/game allowed defense, 8th in rush defense
    • 2009: 6-6, 7th in the B-10 in yards/game allowed defense, 7th in rush defense
    • 2010: 3-9, 8th in the B-10 in yards/game allowed, last in rush defense
Hopefully he learned what doesn’t work so he should know what not to do. We’ll see how this pans out. :|
