New Development on the Way?

Sweet. Me thinks the "surveys" are going to be cooked and this thing gets shoved through. Finally that vote I made way back when will actually materialize.

I think the decision on the events center (or SEC as it is going by these days) will be announced tomorrow...

Ignore my comment above, I'm a week behind (thanks State Hornet for being on top of the ball with updated articles  ). The student advisory board unanimously approved the recommendation to proceed with the fee to expand the union and build an events center. Next step is for Gonzales and the Board of Trustees to take into consideration the student advisory recommendation and make a final decision. I won't get too excited until a shovel hits the ground (the goal for this is later 2014) but it is pretty evident that the events center is all systems go.

I attended the Master Plan Forum last night. I have to say that AC Martin, the architects/planners leading this effort are doing a tremendous job. A lot of cool concepts and ideas have been generated and the plan has incorporated a lot of feedback received from various on-campus groups and attendees. A link to the presentation has yet to be posted, but here is the jist:

General
  • • The goal is for 5k on-campus beds. This is about 3k new on-campus residents. Would push for about 20% of students to be on-campus residents.
    • Most of the planned resident halls will be along the river (south of the existing housing) and the south east entrance on College Town and University. Some were even put in the south west corner of the campus by the RR tracks and Folsom Blvd.
    • Increased access to the river from campus, primarily for bikes and pedestrians.
    • A lot more parking structures. Most of the new residence halls are built on top or next to a new parking structure. Another big one is planned to go east of the current athletics building.
    • New science building next to Guy West Bridge is a lock. I think this has a federal funding component to it.
    • Those old crappy buildings in the middle row are going to be demolished as new buildings are built.
    • A new tunnel under the RR tracks will be completed and a transit center near HS/Well will be completed to tie the campus to the LR station at 65th. This would be for shuttle service but not city buses as the tunnel will be a low profile one. This was planned with City input with the goal of reducing traffic in the area as well as parking needs on campus. I think this would also encourage people to come out to HS for events.
    • New admin building south of the J St loop will serve as a gateway building. Possibly some kind of an arc that leads to the quad to the south.
    • Performing arts center south east of the big parking structure.
    • Most of the new academic buildings are more towards the middle of campus, some currently where the old buildings are and some southeast of the new parking structure.
    • A green beltway stretching from the arboretum to Folsom Blvd. Will also incorporate ways to mitigate stormwater.
Athletics
  • • Event center (SEC) will be placed between the new parking structure and the union. Also the SEC may be built such that offices, conference room space, exercise area wrap around the new parking structure such that it will cover up north and west side of the parking structure. This location will serve the Union expansion well since that is what the new fee is also funding.
    • New baseball and softball fields/stadiums north of the current softball field. Soccer field will go where the softball field and tennis courts currently are, and it will be rotated 90 degrees.
    • Practice track/field will shift north and take up the area where the current baseball field is. Not sure if it looked as though it is big enough for the location of a new T&F facility but I don’t think that is the plan.
    • Hornet Stadium was shown with no track and with permanent seating in a horseshoe set up with the open end on the south. This will obviously change thanks to the new track fiasco.
    • No changes shown to Yosemite Hall and the gymnastics area. My guess is the Nest will serve as practice facilities once the SEC is built.
Concerns/Issues Voiced by various people
  • • At build out, the Alumni Center is shown as being demolished to make room for another academic/admin building. Alumni Association representatives were not happy and this will probably be changed. Apparently the AA is selling off naming rights to the building and the conference rooms and they are worried potential donors will see this and balk at making a donation. My guess is the plan will be changed so that it does not appear that the AC will be removed.
    • Not enough intramural fields. My recommendation was to use the top level of a parking structure as a field, similarly to what SDSU has done. I also think they will find a way to free up more open space.
    • At build out, virtually no tailgate space.
    • Resident halls in southwest corner too close to RR tracks.

Lots of other stuff was covered but those are the main points that I can recall. I will post a link to the presentation once it is uploaded to the Master Plan website.

Thanks SD, excellent observations.

1). I see some concerns too, namely $$$. Baseball/softball just spent $5M on upgrades over the past decade or so, and in the sport bio they are proud that home plate has not moved in 50yrs. Why give up that unique tradition and at least $5M for new construction to move 300yds. down the campus? To what advantage? If it is a matter of the baseball field needing re-grading and resurfacing that can be done for far less than $5M.
2). Will the new track have artificial turf for constant wear and open to intramurals? With 5K on-campus students there will need to be more outdoor activity space, as SD noted above.
3). Tailgating is big, where will there be room to expand rather than contract this event?
4). What about a Greek village?
5). What specifically is Hornet Village?

Thanks again SD, great work. Next event looks to be in February.

The presenter mentioned this was a 15-20 year plan and obviously most of projects on the plan will not be immediately constructed. They did say retail and commercial type areas will be incorporated with the new resident halls, I just didn’t mention it. The goal is to turn the campus into a more 24-7 atmosphere with the increased resident housing so the accompanying facilities will also be a must to accomplish that vision. If you want to consider that a “Hornet Village” then so be it.

As far as the greeks go, surly they have some wealthy benefactors somewhere who can lead the way with a “frat row”. The school shouldn’t be responsible for supplying that atmosphere imo…or the greeks could get off their asses and show up to these forums and provide input. No one is getting shut out of this master plan process and the planners are very receptive to outside ideas.

I thought about the baseball move too. I would hate to see it move not because of the home plate thing, but I think losing the parking structure (our poor mans version of the Green Monster) would be the nostalgic thing lost. Ultimately I think the move has to do with facilitating more open space in that area and the current baseball facilities are hemmed in by the throwing pit (built a few years ago for about a quarter mil) and road so there is limited space to put in a press box, new clubhouse/locker rooms, and other amenities. Ultimately if moving the baseball field will get Hornet baseball top of the line facilities and keep Christiansen happy (and a Hornet) then I am ok with it.

SD, would you be happy with a Jenny Craig Pavillion clone for hoops. I was studying the design, capacity, layout, etc... and while I would love the 6-8k arena we were promised in 2004, if this is the best we could do, that would be perfectly fine with me. What say you?

Kadeezy, I could certainly live with having a facility like the Jenny Craig Pavillion. I've attended several games there, including the last WCC tourney before they moved it to Vegas and the place is great, albeit a little small for the WCC tourney; but it would be fine for the Hornets unless we got as good as the Zags - and it would certainly help recruitment versus what we have now.

I like Jenny Craig Arena, but I think 5K is too small for a school with 30K students. If we are going to market this in the community as an alternative to Sleep Train or the new arena for events we will need something that can handle more than 5K. Build for the future at 7-8K, it will be another 50yrs. until a replacement.

NO NEW ARENA

Why do I support this school?

Well can't say I am that surprised. I knew there was no reason to get hopes too high until a shovel hit the ground. Stupid move imo. Pretty much a 50-50 split by the students to proceed with the project and Gonzo pulls the plug.

Okay, I've had time to process and cool off since last week, but I'm still pissed. First we had the Causeway debacle, then this sh!tty news. I've been puzzled that with student support so evenly split, Gonzo decided to make his decision a big fat no, and leave the students, alumni and fans hanging once more. But I guess there is a reason for everything, I just wish I knew what it was. The event center is pivotal if we want to truly move forward and be taken seriously as a program and university. When I first read the Hornet, my reaction was we would be better off dropping to DII, and going CCAA. The university and department look uninterested and stagnant. All the talk of taking it to the next level and upping our exposure and community/fan appeal seems like a lie. Coupled with our recent incompetence at the coaching ranks, How can we be taken seriously at the DI level?

Now, maybe we a plan B waiting in the wings, which will restore faith in this institution and athletic program, and if so, it had better pop up soon. But I know that's probably wishful thinking, and Sac State is becoming comfortable being mediocre at best. I still think there is a realistic option of renovating the Nest and the old athletic offices/complex into something modern, larger, offering more amenities and a place that could become a decent recruiting tool. I've even drawn up some new amateur renovation plans, that would make our basketball/volleyball digs closer to the rest of our mid-major peers. The space is there, and it would be cheaper. I know its not what any of us want, but if we aren't going to build a real venue, lets improve and make the most of what we have. Maybe its realistic, maybe its not, but we cannot sit in that gym for another decade.

C'mon State, lets get our sh!t together!

SJ, do you have a link to your renderings for Yosemite hall? I seem to remember then being posted on the board a year or two ago.

Don't have the link, but I can PM you late tonight (at work) or tomorrow with the various concepts I've come up with.

A student called me tonight from the alumni association seeking a donation. I politely laid out my plan for no support until a new arena is built on campus and how disgusted we are at Gonzo for being limp (insert adjective here) about the funding. By chance, she has a meeting tomorrow with him and will bring up this topic.

Apparently, Gonzo got cold feet about the funding because the wages were raised for the people who would work there and it changed the funding model. Not sure how that would effect funding, but whatever. He is going to postpone the project until he has more time to review, he felt next semester was too soon and rushed to push the project through. That was her excuse.

I say excuses.
