New HC Blind Hopes and Wishes

Top of my list, Harding head coach Paul Simmons. Might be tough to rip him away from his alma mater as he stayed after winning a national title. He’s won 85% of his games as a head coach and is the absolute model for a Head Coach/Defense Coordinator hybrid.

Bring him in and half the harding roster.

We have two coaches under contract right not, Richardson and Fresques. Worst time possible to lose players, HS recruits, and miss on transfers. Not good.

Excluding Kris Richardson (the only viable internal option)... All depends of how much $$$ we can throw at these guys...

-Mack Leftwich (Tx St. OC)

-Daniel Da Prato (Tx St. Associate HC, Former Hornet)

-Junior Adams (Oregon WR Coach, BSC experience, recruits like a mo-fo).

-Andy Avalos (TCU DC - a reach, but former position coach here, would be ideal to lead to MWC or Pac-12).

-Hines Ward (ASU WR Coach)

-Eddie George (Tenn Tech HC)

-Kyle Cefalo (Utah State former OC?)

We need a real leader of the program and not so much someone that is a good coordinator that can learn the HC role. IMO Richardson is a strong position/coordinator that would need to learn a lot of thrive as HC. Not sure what the patience. I wonder if TT poaches Richardson as well

1. Mike Canales, OC Southeastern (FL)/2x Interim HC N. Texas/2x OC S. Florida
2. Angus McClure, Offensive Analyst, Kansas
3. Jon Osterhout, HC American River College

That said, Sting's choice is intriguing. While they ARE a D-II, Harding has been a national power at that level for quite some time, so the dude knows how to coach; it's not like Sting is advocating some random D-II. It's a choice I could easily get behind, even while I'm "stuck" (as some put it) on old Hornets. Sting's point that Simmons might not be willing to leave his alma mater could be a factor, though. But when you choose from lower levels, it's got to be from lower-level powers, and Harding certainly qualifies. While those listed above are just personal favorites, others who could be mentioned are Geoff Dartt, HC at always good D-III Mount Union; Scott Wooster, HC at D-II Grand Valley State; and Tony Annese, HC at D-II Ferris State.

That said, it looks like McLeod Bethel-Thompson's playing career is winding down; I'd like to see if his interest could be gauged in returning to Sac as QBs Coach.

Richardson was the HC that started the Folsom build into the juggernaut they eventually became. Taylor came back into the fold, full time anyway, around 2012 as the co-HC. But the start of it all came under KR’s leadership.

While Taylor is certainly the QB whisperer and the superior offensive mind wrt coordinating an offense, Richardson was the man behind the o-line and the reason for their increased physical and mental toughness. Also, KR coaches a bit more conservatively than Taylor, which might be the type balance this program needs.

Point is, I don’t believe he’ll need to learn anything more than Taylor needed to learn after only a couple seasons as a collegiate coordinator. And he was pretty successful right out of the gate. There’s no reason KR can’t do the same.

My only concern with KR is retaining Fresques as OC. But if he was named HC and parted ways with Bobby F, I’d be on board with seeing where that road leads. I just doubt he’d actually axe his friend.

Tim Skipper will be interviewing Orr next Monday. He’d an excellent choice if the program can provide the resources that he thinks he needs to be successful.
I liked Tim Skipper, but I do have concerns about head coaches with a defensive mindset. It seems like one of the reasons Fresno State decided to move on from him. But he does have ties to recruits and players seem to love him. Also, it would be very weird and take some adjusting for me to accept the fact that we hired the 2004 defensive coordinator from Steve Mooshagian’s staff as our new head coach in 2024.

I would assume he's come a long way in 20 years.

Just throwing darts at a board looking at who is available and came across Troy Morrell at Utah State… .875 winning percentage in across 15 seasons, one of the winningest coaches in NJCAA history at Butler CC which is a high caliber of football. Most recently at USU (top 10 in YPG and 32 point per game offense LY) as Associate Head Coach/Offensive Analyst, might be looking for a permanent role again as a head coach?
