New Jerseys

Why doesn't Sperbeck allow the players to have the names on the back of their jerseys? Montana does and they are the best team in our conference? We need to start competing with the best, to be the best!

This isn't a Sperbeck deal. This is a school tradition going back to the beginnings of Sac State football. My understanding is that it promotes teamwork over self-centeredness. The one time I can remember a relaxing of this rule was when EVERYONE wore the name of HOF coach Bob Mattos as he was dying of cancer a few years ago; the emotion welling up from that led to the incredible Mattos March, which ended a rather painful string of losses to the Farm Extension. I don't see this tradition ending any time soon.

Are you a troll?

C'mon! Putting names on the back of the jerseys will not improve performance. Getting the best coaches and team minded players will. FYI, USC, one of the best FBS footballl squads, doesn't have players last names on their jerseys either.

Not to mention it also costs more money

Actually that streak was broken the prior year. The Mattos March (thank you MBT for finding Reed in the back of the endzone) was the following year.

Names on the back of the jersey don’t affect the performance on the field. It would be nice to see have some replicas on sale in the bookstore or online.

It doesn't cost that much money for names on the back of the Jersey's... Sac State needs to start investing in the football program

And they have. Hence, they spent the money to bring in an offensive coordinator.

Is your kid on the team? Is this the first time you'll see the family surname on something positive? Or do you own a sports apparel, embroidery shop and you're attempting to gain business?

No I am just a fan and curious about not having names on jerseys all the top programs do. I do not think a name on the jersey has anything to do with being self centered. Are you sure we have the biggest football/athletic budget in the big sky?

Yes, $17.5M, UM beat us by $100K.

We also sponsor more sports than they do so must of our budget is eaten up due to Title IX. Last I heard UM was battling Title IX issues (aside from battling all the DUI and rape allegations) and were adding women’s softball to be compliant.

Good point SD, Sac has 20 sports and UM has 14.

Its certainly not cheap. I remember my dad's old boss was a booster for SJSU. One year they asked him to donate for them to get names on the backs of their jerseys. I remember they wanted a few thousand a year, and this was the early-mid 90s. While it may not seem like a lot, in these hard financial times we have to be looking to save money, not waste it.

Not true.

LAHF has already cited U$C as not sewing on names. Other "top programs" eschewing names include Notre Dame, Montana, Sam Houston State, North Dakota State, and Penn State.

Weber State is taking the names off of thier uniforms and replacing it with Wildcats, John L. Smith believes in players playing for the team, not for themselves.

"That's a philosophy I've always believed in," Smith said recently. "We're not a bunch of individuals. The name that matters is the one that's on the front. That's what I've believed forever. For us to be real good, we've got to buy in to the team aspect."

The two national championship teams have them LSU & Alabama! It maybe a small reason why they were the #1 & #2 teams ;)

The inconsistent BCS formula is the "small reason why they were the #1 & #2 teams". If you feel vehemently about this, then become a donor. I believe someone already stated that being a donor can help remedy that. Other wise the topic is like :dead:
