From the article, it appears Hammer was the one who left and not Hill sending him off…seems small, but still a problem in that Hill is not making the moves to improve the team. Maybe there is more to the story, and it’s a way to save face…who knows.

At the end of the day, they still need a new OC. If Hill is truly wanting to take the offense where it needs to be, he will search outside the staff and hire someone who is innovative. I worry it’s just going to be a promote within again.

Still should be looking for a QB in the portal. I honestly think Weisser should have the edge of current QBs. He was showing a lot of promise until the broken leg. Barron is slow and digressing in his reads and his passing technique.

Very tough schedule in 2022. The Wildcats will need a lot of improvements just to maintain 6-5.

We’ll see how it plays out…but a promising start.

Agreed...let's hope that Coach Hill has the resources & is successful in getting the best prospect for the OC job. The article quotes Coach Hammer as saying the decision was primarily for personal family reasons & is reasonable in that he's leaving football at least for a while for something else. Hope it works out well for him. Thanks to him for the time & energy it required...he said he loved it all.

I agree. I wish nothing but the best for coach Hammer and our program going forward.

There may well be other changes coming. I'm hoping that it all makes our program better going forward.

We've got about a month or so before spring ball. The new OC should be hired by then and any position coaching changes made as well.

As always, the competition for all positions will be wide open. On the offensive side of things, the new OC will have most of the say in establishing a depth chart. Even if they have a good idea of who might start, they probably won't say much about it until late summer. That leaves us all sorts of time to speculate. A lot may ride on who they sign in February.

New blood and enthusiasm can get us all going. :coffee:

If anyone out there truly believes Matt Hammer just voluntarily walked away from WSU football then I have some great ocean front property here in Utah to sale you. I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors, and appreciate everything he did here at WSU. I'd be willing to bet that he will be back in high school coaching within the next few years and I really hope he is. He did a damn good job at Weber High and had such a positive impact on so many kids there.
I'm excited to see who WSU brings in as the new OC but I also realize they will be asked to run a certain ball control, time of possession type of offense. Jay Hill loves the Ron McBride/Kyle Whittingham model and it works great here at WSU as well.

Any candidates?

I'm going to throw out two:

1. Lehi's Ed Larson
2. Corner Canyon's Eric Kjar

Either would be an excellent OC and QB coach.

Hiring a HS coach is a bit of a gamble. Although, hiring any coach is a gamble. I would say, just take your time and get who you think will be the best fit and most productive. That might turn out to be another HS coach, who knows?

Those two guys are successful HS coaches just like our outgoing coach. It would be nice to know more about their backgrounds, like where they played and for whom. I'm sure there will be a lot of interest in the position. It's not a rush. We have a month or so to get someone going. :coffee:

I agree, it's a matter of broad, open scouting for the best possible fit. Just going the HS route is a bigger gamble than including a sweep of maybe some FCS staffs, Div II, etc. Coach Hill will sometime be moving on, hopefully not sooner than optimal, but consideration may be made of a coach that could become a positive candidate promotion to HC. Also, there is a limitation to be considered as to the resources ($$) to attract the best candidate.

It would be best to do a thorough search, not just a grab of a known acquaintance who is at a HS, a graduate assistant, or promote from the current staff. But Hill knows best, I just agree also that Chex made a good point on this thread. :coffee:

Not saying I advocate hiring any high school coach, but Ed Larson is not just any high school coach. He has been a college coach a number of times: BYU, New Mexico, Snow, Ricks, Dixie and Southern Utah. He has taken Lehi to the state championships, I could be wrong with this, but four times since he started coaching there in 2014. His player development, especially at QB is incredible. Creyton Cooper is one of his kids and he knows Bronson well. Not saying he should have the job, but I would give him a loooonnnggg look. I don't know much about Kjar. I know he has done a fantastic job at Corner Canyon.

Personally, like you guys, I would look at guys all over the place. Start with coaches currently in the program? To me, really there are only two options. Brent Myers or Jared Ursua would be the two I think could maybe do the job. Brent was an OC at UNLV and has quite the coaching pedigree. He definitely knows his stuff. Ursua would be a total unknown at OC. Is he ready?

Outside of Weber, I'd love to see Fesi come back. Not going to happen with the Y going to the Big 12, but this is a great location for him to get his first HC job. A good run could be the catalyst to get Coach Hill a better paying gig at a "bigger" institution. Fesi could slide into the HC gig.

Has anyone heard anything regarding who is actually a candidate? I would think they would like to have the OC in place in time for spring ball which is just around the corner. Hopefully they have an announcement at the football signing day party (if there is a party.)

Just going by what has happened in the past, we probably won't hear anything for a few more weeks. Likewise, we almost never hear anything about who the candidates were. There is a chance that someone is already in place and has been on the recruiting trail. I have seen these announcements happen weeks after the hire. For fan's, it can be frustrating, but we'll get through it. Hang in there for a few more weeks. :coffee:

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Weber is hiring Mickey Mental as their OC. Mickey is the HC at D2 Notre Dame college. I like that Jay is going outside of WSU for this hire.

Looks like it's a done deal:

If that is true, it would be a solid hire. His offenses have been really good, he's a good recruiter, and he has head coaching experience. He played QB in college and got looks in the pros. Sounds like he runs a balanced attack.

:thumb: This is a promising move & Coach Hill made a good decision from all appearances. This young coach can possibly be a likely candidate for promotion ( HC ) if all the ingredients work out...looks like he climbed the ladder at Notre Dame College. Love the new blood, fresh energy at OC, it's hopeful & positive. Adds some excitement to this fall, along with all the promising young incoming ballers choosing Weber State to demonstrate their stuff !

Very excited about this hire. Mental’s offense appear to be balanced, and he has a QB background. I am already looking forward to football to see what strides the offense can make. Wonder if he might bring a QB with him. If not, I’m sure he can help improve the QBs on the team. Still don’t think Barron is the guy. It will be interesting to see the battle for the starting job and how it plays out.

I will say I have been critical of coach Hill but like others on this board I am super impressed by what seems like a solid hire and one that shows Jay can look outside of the area for talented help. Coach Mental (that’s an ironic name) has proven results on offense unlike the previous fart-knocker we had running the O. He was 2-0 as a head coach against SUU’s new HC and had a tremendous overall record. Getting him as our new OC has given me renewed confidence in what our offense can be.

Even if this hire doesn’t turn out to be as successful as I think it will I’ll always give coach Hill an A++ for this effort. Coach Mental seems well schooled and has a balanced offense which is completely unheard of at Weber in recent years. I wish Mr. Hammer the best of luck in his future but I’m very excited to see a change of direction!!!

Less than a month until spring ball starts, cant wait to see what this new OC can do and i'm also excited to see who ends up on the schedule for game 1.
On a side note, if i read anything else on this fanboard about how Jay Hill has hit his ceiling or whatever then someone is gonna get pimp slapped because they are crying like a little beotch.
