New offensive X factor - Doug Steele

We're going to need someone to step up now that Jace is ineligible. We need that x-factor player. I think this year it will be Doug Steele. He reminds me a lot of Ryan Chesla. Good speed, nice size and catch the ball. He will make all-conference by the end of the year. What say you? Chris Morris? Dylan Orms? John Burnley?

I just don't know if this no huddle spread type offense uses the tight end at all... I think we'll be in 4 receiver sets most of the time.

I think we will see just the right mix of 4 WR's and 3 WR's with Steele...From what I saw in the spring game and over the weekend in the passing against CSU-Pueblo we look pretty damn strong with 4 wides consisting of Morris and Gunn on the outside and Peoples and Walker on the inside...very quick and very fast with plenty of playmaking ability then when you bring in Steele and go with 3 wides and a TE it provides a great counter-attack with the added addition of Steele's size and skills. They subbed in 3 & 4 wides pretty quickly and efficiently in spring and we still have camp to polish things up! :thumb:

I heard UNC beat CSU-P something like 42 - 7 in the 7 on 7. Is that true? Does anyone know the result for sure? Also, haven't heard anything about Chris Morris, Denzel Hutchings, or Darin McDonald. How did those guys look or were they even there?

Yeah, we rolled CSU-Pueblo and that should be expected. I do know Chris Morris tested a 4.39 on his 40 yard dash. He's not even the fastest guy on the team, Collins believes Peoples is. Player parent- do you know who was QB against Pueblo?

All the QB's played against Pueblo with the exception of Laboto who was not there and obviously Deen who is gone; they rotated amongst themselves just about every series which impressed me in two ways (1) that they left their individual egos on the sidelines and rotated themselves without issue and (2) that they were all successful throwing against the Pueblo defense...obviously keep in mind that this was in shorts and the bullets weren't flying but they did well!

@ #1bearsfan, Morris was there and looked good as I stated earlier; did not see McDonald or Hutchings but I heard a rumor that Hutchings may not be coming back although I am not sure about that so perhaps someone else can confirm or correct me. That said, I did see the kids from Florida and the WR looked pretty good...runs good patterns and is fast plus has a little confident edge to himself. Again, Peoples, Gunn and Walker along with Morris continued to present consistent issues forthe Pueblo defense so I believe as a unit we will be just fine without Jace and that is NOT a knock against him I just think those other guys are willing and anxious to show their worth and spreading it around should definitely make it tougher on DC's to strategize how to stop our air attack.

Yea, I was really impressed with Morris in the spring game and believe he will become a force to deal with. Not to take anything away from Jace Davis but I really think Chris Morris will step right in and not miss a beat !!

Yeah, I remember Collins after the spring game saying Morris has the opportunity to be one of the best receivers the school has ever had. He said he's running with the 2nd team and hadn't "earned" his way up to 1st team. I'm not sure if that means he's lazy or doesn't put much effort or doesn't know the playbook, that could mean anything. I still think Doug Steele will be the main factor in this offense.

I have been reading this board for a while now, this is my 1st post. The new offense and it's uptempo approach has BIG potential. Morris, Gunn, Walker, Peoples are tremendous fast guys, and do what they are expected to do. Steele runs great for a big man, and can pose some real problems for defenses....his speed and size make for mismatches for linebackers and safeties. He can play the slot or in tight. From what I hear, and read last year, he has great hands and can make things happen after he makes a catch. While he may be the X Factor, what about the offensive line? have the injured/returning guys from last year made progress????anybody know?

Welcome to the board! I wished I shared your optimism for the new offensive scheme, but maybe it will work. I just think it's gimmicky. Also, I think Dylan Orms could do very well in this offense but his injured knee still doesn't seem like it has healed up.

It's hard to say what kind of progress the offensive line has made or will make since there's not a true offensive line coach this year who's main responsibility is coaching and improving the offensive line. And this is a different offense from the one they played in last year. I believe that some of the o-line probably played the spread option in high school and this should help in the transition to Coach Collin's spread option offense.
From what I understand, most of the o-line is pretty healthy after last season's injuries which sidelined 3 of the starters at least for 1 or 2 games and in Gumb's case for the whole season after the Weber game.
That being said, the o-line returns all the starters from last year except for Tim McGraw who graduated. Right tackle Barbiaz (sp?) is a 3V, All Big Sky, and a pro-prospect; Shapiro, who played guard last year next to Barbiaz is a 3V, and All Big Sky. I've heard that he is moving back to center where he started for 2 seasons before being moved to guard last year. Amal Gumbs, 3V (1 on defense) should be back at guard after his season ending injury last year. Cody Gilmore, 2V (1 on defense) should be the returning left guard and Nick Candler, 2V should be the returning LT. Several of the backups from last year's team saw starting and playing time. This should be a pretty seasoned o-line when everyone is healthy.
IMO, you can never have enough o-linemen because this position seems to have more than its fair share of injuries. It would be great to see all of these men remain healthy throughout the season and become a very cohesive unit.

Yeah I feel that the O-Line should be decent, have a good amount of returning starters, and looking at the roster it looks like we actually have a little bit of depth there now. Even though that depth is kinda inexperienced.

On a different note, did Doug Steele get many balls? I saw that he had 1 reception....how did they use him?
I was also happy to see Chris Morris catch some....again, did they use him as a wide out or slot?

Sorry to bother with trivial questions, but I am trying to get a flavor for this new offense (and I had 91/2 hours on the night shift to think). Gunn w/ 1 catch???? Was it a bubble screen? did the scheme resemble Oregon (in any way) with the read/screen/qb keep progression? Did Downing get reps? did we run a fb?
Again, I appreciate the help of anybody who was at the game.....Once I am at peace with the picture, I can move on to the BEAT CSU mindset....Thanks in advance!

You have got to be kidding me Doug Stelle ? Seriously ? First off let's not disrespect Ryan Cheslea. That guy was prolly the best offensive player we've had here since Waggner. First Team all conference for a team that barley scored 13 points a game. Doug Stelle is no where near complete athlete as Cheslea. Thats a drunk thought that he's the x-factor to the offense stop it please! Ryan would have been an all-American anywhere else in the FCS but Dennis Darnell was a brilliant play caller ( joking). Let's never make this comparison ever again. No where near the skills or Talent as Cheslea.

This years X Factor should be Doug Steele's competition Darrin McDonald .bugger stronger .better athlete. But its a no brainer the offense lives in dies with Patrick Walker. Chris Morris is a joke with Stelle this offense is not build for the spread offense. Spread offense usually conduct behind accurate passers with speedy guys spread out in space. Peoples and Walker are those players. But who's the Qb either let Loboato or Baca run the show. Orms is a great player, but his accuracy may not be fit for this offense, unless you let him do what he does best run around and create down the field opportunities for his wide outs. Gunn has not improved over his freshman year. All the talent in the world but looks like it only gets you so far what is he like 150 lbs. Means someone is not hitting the weight room. But like I said the offense lives and dies with Walker. You have to find way for him to beat people in space and kill you for 3,5,13, then 65 yards like Wes Welker. Find a way to get your best players the ball

How could you honestly say that Morris can replace Davis and your offense not suffer hmmmm? That's tough seems like all the voters and coaches solved that one last year. And I mean the coaches from other BigSky teams . I don't think people clearly think before writing things like this. Morris shows small flashes of greatness when the game is over seems like he's scores when the game is already over. Morris is very weak against press and will not put up a fight against corners who will press him , I seen him just dominated in a game vs NAU years go thrown to the sideline every play they had to take him out and didn't see him much for the rest of the year including the next year as well. And yeah when your best player is not on he field your offense does skip beats it goes into to cardiac arrest in this case. Davis and Morris are no comparison. Davis is truly missed , Walker and Davis could've been great this year. Now Defense can sit in he box blitz our qb's to death because we have Morris and Gun on the outsides, not the strongest wideouts to get off the press. Then everyone eyes walker so There's your offense in a nut shell. Davis opens up too many things run and pass game.
