Is this a good hire for athletics?

clawman,
We will just have to wait and see. Our Provost that was in the running was overlooked, maybe someone on the BOT doesn't like him? I hope that is not it. I am concerned what will happen to Athletic Program, hope she is not one to hate what we are striving to do for our Facilities. Let us all keep our fingers crossed, wait and see, give her the benefit of the doubt. Hope this doesn't sound negative. Vic

When I first read this story http://www.columbian.com/news/2014/may/18/southern-oregon-president-finalist-e-washing/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I thought, well they won't be picking her! What's there to like. With her financial problems at WOU I don't expect the Gateway project to get underway anytime soon.
This part from the story Vic linked to doesn't get me excited either: number of years in the California State University system.
Hope I'm wrong about her but too bad we didn't get Jim Tressel!

Wow that is very unsettling indeed. Based on this article I'm left scratching my head wondering what in the f@#& the hiring committee was thinking. Why in the heck would we give the top job to someone that fell a couple votes shy of being removed from her old job.

Eagledawg,
After I read the information on your thread, I am more concerned about our Athletic Program. I must give her the benefit of the doubt, but with a heavy heart. :? :? :x :x :x Like one other individual have said, "what the hell was the selection committee thinking when they selected her, didn't they see WOU had financial problems?
We had our own Provost in the final three, I taught he might be picked, found out differently yesterday. These are times that we are all going to really miss "President A". Surely hope she hurry and call a meeting so we can all sit in and listen to what she has to say about "The Gateway Project". Here is hoping for the "BEST" for our University, Students, and All Programs at EWU. Vic

To All,
After reading the letter from Board Of Trustees, Dr.Cullilan, is from Southern Oregon University (SOU), Ashland, Oregon. I was saying Western Oregon University (WOU). Vic

Who here thought Dr. Arevalo would be as good as he was for us when he was hired? Not me. I see similarities in Arevalo's and Cullinan's experience, and am hopeful she will continue where Dr. Arevalo left off. Honestly, I see her vote of no confidence at SOU as a positive. Faculty there were upset with her budget cuts that eliminated programs with little relative value, but she focused on SOU's long term viability. She knows she has big shoes to fill at Eastern and says as much http://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140617/NEWS/406170310" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

This. Not all is clear when you're on the outside looking in. I trust our board of trustees must have seen something of value in Cullinan, or they would not have hired her. I will give her the opportunity to prove herself.

This news isn't thrilling from my standpoint. I was in town last weekend for graduation and had heard the final two had come down to Dr. Fuller and Cullinan. There weren't many positive things being said about her and her previous decisions at former institutions. Once again, EWU proved they don't like to take care of their own by choosing someone from the outside to take over the Presidency. :ohno:

I also heard some disturbing news about the Gateway Project. I hope they are just rumors, but has anyone heard ANYTHING recently about the progress?

What did you hear about the Gateway Project????

I know we are all now concerned what will happen to "The Gateway Project", now that President will be leaving. I am just like both of you, willing to give the New President the benefit of the doubt. Just can't wait to see what will happen. Hope it is in all of our interest.   Vic

Not trying to start a panic, but I heard that the whole project was made out to be a lot closer to happening than we all want to believe. It was also said that whoever the architect was for the project, wasn't really an architect, but a buddy of a high ranking member of the university and therefore, the project is basically a pipe dream at this point. Again, I try to stay out of rumor mills, but these comments came from some people I trust and the long "silent phase" we find ourselves in seems more and more fishy everyday.

Rumors have been flying around for some time now. I do not know much more than many of you and possibly less but I can say with all certainty the architectural team was and is legit. They ARE licensed architects.

Deep breaths people.

Relax, worry about the things you can directly control. I think everything will be good.

Enjoy the sport. 8-) 8-)

This lady seems like a blamer to me. She is quick to take credit for positive things that happened at SOU, but blames all the problems on the State of Oregon and faculty. No wonder her staff wanted her out, who is motivated by the boss that takes all the credit and gives all the blame. I hope I'm 100% wrong about this chick, but she reminds me a lot more of Drummond then Arevalo.

Hope she toured the campus and took Washington St. by the stadium. Hope she noticed the second rate visitor stands and said to herself "hmmm, this is a Division one athletic program?" This is what potential students think when first visiting EWU's campus, whether they are athletically minded or not(is this a big time school?) before they even get onto campus.

*Side note; SOU Football team was pretty impressive last season averaging 47 points a game, scoring 56 points on Sac State and beating Montana Western(who we play 8/30) at the end of the season 51-16.

I have no idea where fundraising stands with regards to the stadium expansion... and for the record, I've long supported moving to a trimmed-down version that can be done now rather than later. But I know Eastern is out selling this as something in the works, as I now some big money people who have been contacted and donated to the cause. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those people. More of a small money guy, myself... :ohno:

Can't say I'm thrilled by this. We've had two good Presidents in a row and I am hoping this one doesn't reverse course on everything Jordan and Arevelo has built thus far. It'd be hard to get much worse than Drummond.
