New QB on Campus

QB NIck Green has enrolled at PSU, that gives us 6 QB's (pretty normal for D-1 schools) on the roster. 2 SR Collins, Howland, 1 JR Hubel, 1 SOPH. Kavanaugh and 2 REDSHIRT FROSH Hagan and Green) sounds like a lot but next year two of those guys are gone and Hubel will be a senior, amazing how fast time goes when it comes to college football eligibility

So tell us about Mr. Green. Where is he from and what can we expect out of him?

One note: Howland will likely get an extra year due to injuries.

He definitely committed there out of high school. I'm sure we'll hear more about why he made the move before the season starts.

Nick Green graduated from Central Catholic HS here in Portland. He committed to the Air Force Academy last year. He also was not only recruited but actually offered by Army, Montana St., Northern Arizona, Idaho St, Portland St, and I believe two other schools. If this is true, I would say this is an fairly big pick-up by the Viks, here is what ESPN had to say about him last year.

Green is one of those kids that isn't the tallest, doesn't have the strongest arm, but he is going to be a late bloomer and he has intangibles. He is so similar to former Boise State QB Jared Zabransky in a lot of areas. He has a good feel for the offense and shows very good competitiveness. He has experience on defense as well and is a tough guy. He?s an accurate passer. Is athletic enough to buy second chances in the pocket and he shows good awareness of the rush. He is technically sound. He does a nice job of following through on fakes and will freeze linebackers. He shows some zip on deep out and displays excellent touch on vertical routes and fade patterns. Is at his best when taking three-to-five step drops and delivering the ball right away. He?s a rhythm passer that can get on a streak and become very accurate and efficient. He throws a very catchable ball and does good job of leading receivers underneath on crossing routes. However, Green's size is a concern and he?s a pocket passer with a marginal arm. May struggle to make some deeper throws at the college level. Holds onto the ball too long at times and must stop patting the ball before delivery. The bottom line is that Green has chance in the right program and right system. Mid-majors should be all over this kid.

So he went to Air Force as a freshman and is now coming to PSU. Did he redshirt or play? Three years of eligibility or four?

According to our source, 2viksons, we'll have to assume he's going to have 4 based on his reference to him as a redshirt freshman. I also seem to recall that he had a knee injury his senior year of high school. Perhaps that's the reason he redshirted.

Ex-Ram Nick Green joins QB mix at Portland State

If he has four years to play three, I'm guessing he'll not play in 2009 and let the depth chart thin out a bit (due to graduations and potential transfers) before trying to win the starting job in 2010.

I have to think that if Air Force was interested in him, he can take a lick and get right back up when running the ball. We'd better see some pseudo-spread looks in the spring game, or I'll be headed straight for the beer line...

We will probally go from 6 to 3 QB's next year. (plus a new reruit in 2010) If Hubel starts again not sure Tygue will come back for a 6th year and ride the pine, I also wonder if PSU is obligated to give a sixth year non-starter a scholarship?? Anybody know???. I could understand if Tygue is the starter and excels this year that PSU will bring him back, but my guess is Hubel will start for 2 more years. Collins will be done and I can't imagine that Kavanagh will stick around for five years and sit the whole time, if the new modified run and shoot / spread offense emerges and Kavanaugh doesn't get a shot he will transfer to Lewis and Clark, so I can see next year having Hubel, Green and Hagan plus a new name. I really like the fact that players like Green and Hagan can stay behind the scenes for a few years to grow and learn, my guess is that Green will become a starter with Hagan a solid back up down the road
