New Radio Home For Hornet Football

I just heard that KTKZ, 1380 AM in Sacramento will broadcast Sac State Football this season. This is a major upgrade over the junk "network" stations that we have in the past that could barely be heard in the stadium.
I am not sure how far KTKZ's signal carries but it is strong in Sacramento. Last year KTKZ carried Cal Bears football and basketball and the Dallas Cowboys.

Thank goodness. While I appreciated 93.1's Sperbeck interviews on their website, the signal coverage was pretty poor in the Sac area. Glad Sac'll be back on KTKZ.

93.1 FM has a solid section on their website dedicated to their coverage of the Hornets. They also had an iheartradio app that allowed you to listen to the game so long as you have cell coverage. Will the new station match the outlets/exposure 93.1 provided? :?: Sure a stronger signal is important, but in this day and age online streaming is boss.

There are many ways to follow the Hornets online for us diehard Hornet fans. My concern is that for the casual or potential Hornet fan the program is practically invisible in the market. If you want to grow the program, you need to make it as visible and convenient as possible for the entire community to follow the team. 93.1 did do a good job with the ore and post game etc., I'm not sure how much of that was done by the station and how much was done by the radio package from the school. Bottom line is that both 93.1 in Placerville and KHYL in Auburn were low powered and located and located 40 miles from Sacramento, their reception was limited. KHYL in particular was useless, they also carry Cal and the Oakland A's, the Hornets were only aired when nothing else was on. As I recall they only carried the second half of the NMSU opener after the A's game. I listened to Cal games on KTKZ, they, carried the complete package, pre/ post game etc.
They also have been doing the Friday night high school game of the week for years, and they provide a live stream. I just think it is a positive for the program.

While I appreciate the boos in wattage, I have major concerns about this move. A check of the new station's website shows that it is largely one of those low-powered AM Christian-worldview talk stations. I have no problems with Christian music stations (national Christian rock station Air1 out of Rocklin is my primary station), this new station has ZERO sports coverage on their website. If GL's description of previous sports coverage is correct, we'll be third banana to Cal and the Cowboys. Additionally, if my experience with similar talk stations holds true here, there will be little in the way of on-air plugs for our teams' games.

I hope I'm wrong here, but it seems that this move may backfire on us....

I think you got it wrong SH. The main station is KTKZ 1380 AM it's primarily a news talk station. The station that you are talking about is KFIA FM a low powered christian station that may also carry the games. I haven't heard anything about the Cal games or the Dallas Cowboys being on KTKZ this season. We may be the only game in town.

Well I’ve done some poking around the new radio stations website and its pretty much a steaming pile. The red text on gray background does wonders on the eyes. There is no sports section and nothing proclaiming that they are the new home for Hornet football radio which is a stark contrast to the perceived excitement 93.1 had on their website when they landed the Hornet radio contract. Hopefully they get something up on their website. The tunein.com area for this station does list Cal and Sac State as provided content, no mention of the Cowboys, and KTKZ is available on iheartradio so there will be at least one mobile streaming app that caries this station.

SDh, From Salem Communications which owns both KTKZ and KFIA the christian station that SH referred to;

KTKZ 1380 will carry the Hornets and Cal, KFIA 710 AM will carry Nevada and Stanford. I'm not sure who will get the nod if schedules conflict, but they have been promoting the Hornets on air all week and haven't mentioned Cal. Both Cal and Stanford games can already be heard in Sac on the Bay Area Stations.

Did you read that press release? It had a dateline of 2005.

IMO, I don't think we are switching stations.

Wow, I just picked that up. I still think we are making a change, why else would KTKZ be plugging "Listen to Sac State Hornet Football starting on Aug 29th at San Jose State". They have been running the spots all week.

I haven't listened to KTKZ since thy lost the radio contract. Probably why I haven't heard the spots.

If we want the younger crowd (i.e., new support), you have to go FM or have apps they can download (e.g. iheartradio, like 93.1). They don't even sell devices that you can buy at reatail stores, like Target (close to Sac State) that receive AM anymore. Therefore, no one walking around campus is going to hear the advertising if we are broadcasting on an old AM station.

If you can remember records, like me, then the only sports AM that counts in Sacramento is 1140 (Kings and the faggies) or 1320 (Eastern Sports and Programming Network). Those AM stations equal sports that matter in Sacramento, no matter who you are.

THis is a mistake. Who's decision is this?

Go Hornets!

Leaving 93.1 was a huge, huge mistake. The FM signal and production was better than ever. And I loved being across the country listening to the game on my iheart radio app.

What the hell?

Well I just checked my iHeart app and KTKZ is on there so that's a good sign.

I feel this way too…but really in this day and age who surfs radio stations? No one I know listens to more than a couple stations, and everyone I know listens to music via iTunes/mp3 type of devices. I think it will hurt moving to a station that appears to not really care that they broadcast our games, but will it matter one way or the other? Did being on 93.1 bring in new fans? Will KTKZ? Probably a moot point when you crunch the numbers. So long as BigSkyTV can properly sync the radio broadcast with the video stream it will be all good.

I live 75 miles west of campus in the Bay Area and the FM station that carried us this past year came in better than the station we are going back to.

The announcement about the switch to 1380 KTKZ is on Hornet Sports, http://www.hornetsports.com/generalnews/ktkz1380" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They will also carry all the basketball games live and stream all broadcasts They have also been doing spots about the season and advertizing season ticket packages this week. I know there are some that are not happy about the change but I think it will benefit the program.

I think it is good that both marquee sports will be on one station. Per the Hornetsports release:
The package will include live broadcasts of every Hornet football and men’s basketball game, as well as a 30-minute pregame show during the football season. Broadcasts will also be streamed live and free on iHeart radio and on http://www.hornetsports.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
The deal is for 5 years. I would like to see a Hornet section on their website like 93.1 had with links to previous broadcasts as well as the pregame show along with any other interviews they might do. I sent the station a Facebook message (couldn’t find an email for this station) 2 weeks ago and have yet to get a reply.
