Well it appears to be a done deal. Scratching my head on this one...not sure how he is going to "develop" our young linemen...I guess we can hope coaching runs in the family???

"Coachacpatterson 23 hours ago - Well since @FootballScoop found out before I announced it I might as well announce it now. I will be coaching oline next season for the Portland State Vikings. I want to thank Coach Barnum for taking a chance on me. Let's go win the #BigSky and Go Viks"

Coach AC Patterson just graduated from UTEP this month. Dec. 11, 2014 - A total of 23 UTEP student-athletes will graduate from the university on Saturday.A.C. Patterson (Football) - A.C. came to UTEP for the 2011 season after an All-State campaign at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. He earned a spot on the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll in 2012. He is a Multidisciplinary Studies major

Sounds like he redshirted then played a season or two there and then knee injuries may have ended his career early at UTEP? (Note about UTEP recruiting linemen from May 2013) - After the loss of backup A.C. Patterson to multiple knee injuries, there was a huge need to find some depth at the center position…

Bio of his father this year at Minnesota Vikings…
Andre Patterson
Defensive Line; Held same position with Vikings in 1998-99. Has coaching experience at all three levels: five years coaching high school, 14 in college and 10 seasons as an NFL coach. Has head coaching experience with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo from 1994-96. Patterson has coached with the Broncos, Browns, Cowboys and Patriots. Played collegiately at Contra Costa College and Montana.

A divison 1 coaching job offer less than three weeks after graduation? Talk about opportunity knocking early.

Is it me or would it be a bit weird to have your position coach be of the same age as you (e.g. John Wolfe)?

First we have Burton with no experience at HC, now we've got an OL coach with no experience at anything? Is this the best PSU can do? Consolations: his salary won't cut much into the budget. And he won't be second-guessing or challenging our new head coach (with no experience at HC).
Remains to be seen if Montana's doing any better.

Is he the oline coach or an assistant to Morton? I can see him being an assistant but not sure about running the oline himself at such a young age and with lack of experience.

Kind of curious on this one. We have a lot of young talent on the oline and I'm certain Barnum recognizes this. I'd be really surprised if he squanders it by hiring a coach with no experience to bring these kids up.

They still have Morton listed on the website as O line coach. That would be down by now if he was out. This kid is assisting.

Being that you asked, Montana went with the coach from Colorado Mines.

As far as Patterson, it is what it is. Uncertainty over Barnum's "interm" label will keep better coaches away. Why take a chance on a one year shot, not knowing if the coaching staff will be back the following year? As seen by Riley going to Nebraska and the Wisconsin coach coming to the Beavs, most coaches will bring in their own staff. But, you have to start somewhere.

• Bruce Barnum is still in the process of putting together his PSU football coaching staff, but he already has hired what may be the nation's youngest coach.

A.C. Patterson, 22, who played briefly at Texas-El Paso before injuries curtailed his career, will be one of four "young coaches" Barnum will employ.

The 6-foot, 310-pound Patterson, a center during his playing days, will assist with the Vikings' offensive line and help in the weight room. It will be his first coaching assignment after graduation from UTEP.

Patterson is the son of Minnesota Vikings defensive line coach Andre Patterson, who played for Mike Price at Washington State. Andre Patterson and Barnum coached together at Western Washington, and coincidentally, Barnum was there on the day A.C. was born in Pullman, Wash.

"I've known A.C. all his life," Barnum says. "All he has ever wanted to do is coach. He is champing at the bit to get started. I can give him that first assignment in a profession I know he'll excel at, because of the type of person and worker he is. He's 22 going on 45 as far as his football knowledge."

Thanks for the link.

Interesting side bit about Geving and the yoga. Paying out of his own pocket...

Fry, Sekona Join Viking Football Staff In Time For Spring Practice

http://www.goviks.com/news/2017/3/28/fry-sekona-join-viking-football-staff-in-time-for-spring-practice.aspx
Portland State Football Coach Bruce Barnum has added two new defensive assistants to his staff for 2017, Colin Fry and Hansen Sekona.
Fry, formerly at California Berkeley, spent four seasons as a graduate assistant for defense with the Golden Bears. Sekona comes to Portland State after spending the last two seasons at the University of Washington. Sekona was a graduate assistant on the defense for the 2016 Pac-12 Champions.
"We are lucky to have both of them here," said Barnum. "Hiring the right staff is the most difficult thing I see as a head coach. We hire our coaches to make our players better. With Colin and Hansen we have two coaches with experience at a high level and two that are proven recruiters."

Fry coached the nickel and dime packages for the Cal defense, while assisting with the secondary and linebackers. Fry also specialized in recruiting defensive players.
Prior to his time at Cal, Fry was a defensive assistant at Nevada from 2010-13. There, he assisted with the coaching of the secondary, broke down game film, assisted with recruiting and was part of the 2010 WAC Champion Nevada squad.
In 2009, Fry was an assistant coach at Elsinore High School, working with the linebackers and the receivers. His team was the 2009 Sunbelt champions.
He was an assistant coach at Temecula Preparatory in 2008, coaching quarterbacks and defensive backs, while also assisting with fundraising.
Fry received his bachelor's degree in general studies from Nevada in 2011 and his master's degree in public health from Cal in 2015.
Prior to working at Washington, Sekona was at the College of San Mateo in the Bay Area where he coached linebackers - including former Viking Mosa Likio. In 2014, Sekona helped CSM to a 9-2 overall record and coached a defense that allowed just 237.2 yards and 15.9 points per game.
Sekona, who attended Aragon High School, began his playing career at College of San Mateo. From there, he transferred to Kansas State, earning two letters as a linebacker for the Wildcats. Sekona played in all 24 games during his Wildcats career.
He earned his bachelor's degree in criminology from Kansas State.

Spring football begins on April 5 for Portland State. Practice time is 8-9:30 a.m.
