Background:
The Academic and Student Recreation Center at Portland State, located on the former site of the Portland Center for Advanced Technology (PCAT), is a $71 million multi-use project fusing recreation, academic space, and the future home of PSU’s School of Social Work.

The site will also house the city of Portland's historic archives, the Oregon University System’s chancellor office, and 20,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. The six story, 180,300 square-foot project is scheduled to open in Fall 2009, and is designed to meet or exceed Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification standards.

This is great. It'll open up Stott to be Athletic Department specific.

It is too bad that PSU didn't roll new arena funding into the bonds that were generated for this project. That is how most other Universities get their arenas done is in conjunction with a rec center.

They probably didn't have enough athletics advocates involved in the planning. Either that, or they didn't believe it would get funding with arena renovation.

It was a fight to get just the Rec Center. Trying to roll a new Stott Center into the deal would have killed it. With our administration, students, and the State of Oregon, we've got to take baby steps.

Campus Rec says plans in progress to make future rec center achieve LEED

It's good to hear that they're on track with LEED certification measures, but the author makes it seem like this is a rarity. However, I'm pretty sure there's a law in Oregon that requires all new state/public buildings to be LEED certified, so great, but no surprise.

I like it! Incidentally, I hope they get those fountains in the urban plaza working at some point. It seems like they've been turned off for one reason or another for about 75% of the time since the Urban Center opened 10 years ago.

More space to play

Campus Rec is celebrating its fifth birthday with a present for members: more space to play.

This summer, Portland State University’s Student Recreation Center is adding 3,700 square feet for fitness equipment, small group workouts and personal training. Construction is expected to be finished by Sept. 19 — just in time for the start of fall term.

The result will be an extension of the fourth floor from the current balcony to the windows, a stairway connecting the new area to the third-floor weight room and a better view of the Urban Plaza and Mt. Hood.

Campus Rec leaders say the changes will help keep up with increased demand and make the fourth-floor feel more welcoming. Up to 2,300 people use the center every day during the peak seasons.

"We're so excited for this expansion because it gets back some of the spaces we had to cut in initial construction and will help improve student health and retention," says Alex Accetta, executive director. "At the same time, we are reducing the noise for our co-tenant on the fifth floor of this awesome building, the City of Portland Archives.

Some areas of the Rec Center are closed and some equipment and classes have been moved for the construction work. But the pool, climbing center, outdoor program and most other activities are operating as normal.

Campus Rec has more details on its expansion page.

Student membership at the Rec Center is included in tuition and fees. PSU faculty, staff, alumni and other affiliates also can join.
