Next Seasons Schedule

Will the new schedule be out soon? I've seen some of the other west coast teams have theirs out already.

The 2007-2008 schedule didn't come out until early September last year, so it may be a while.

Here are a couple games that we'll see on it...

At least we get to host a Bracket Buster game. I hate the Bracket Buster game since it takes focus off of Big Sky play when we are deep into conference play, but a home game isn't that bad. Heck, maybe we'll even get some TV coverage with our tourney run last year....

ON CAMPUS: Vikings in Great Alaska Shootout

The Portland Tribune, Jul 9, 2008

Portland State will play in the 31st annual Great Alaska Shootout preseason men's basketball tournament next season, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

San Diego State, Hampton, Northern Illinois, Louisiana Tech, Western Carolina and host Alaska-Anchorage also are in the field, the newspaper says, with an eighth team to be determined.

Shows how much travel costs are affecting teams. No major or even semi-powers. Ouch. Hope it still gets televised.

Well, I think PSU will get a couple of wins out of that event, but it would have been nice to have some bigger names and chances to pull an upset or two.

The powers have the money to travel. This shows how far the GAS has fallen. The Maui tournament seems to have all the big names these days. Surprise?

Yeah, the GAS has fallen in talent. Remember 15 years ago the programs that were going up for it?

Maybe a big name program will come in for the 8th spot.

Question: Do you consider this a step up from the Top of the World Classic from last year?

I think the GAS still has some lustre, though big names have fallen off the last couple years. We can't expect the Top of the World every year - at least, until we win the Big Sky again this year. It'll get progressively easier.

Yeah, it will be a nice stepping stone for when we're winning the Maui Invitational and Coaches vs. Cancer. ;)

Finally, it's out. :-)

Some thoughts....

Rice? You'd think if we're flying all that way, we could play an SEC team or something. Rice didn't even win a conference game last year.

I like the Baylor game, but that's a brutal road schedule in December. 7 of 8 on the road at one point.

Fullerton is a solid program, and I like the fact that they are coming to the Stott.

I hate the bracketbuster games, but I think I hate it a wee bit less since it's at home this season. I seriously doubt we'll get it picked up on ESPN, but you never know. At least we have four games on TV at this point with more to be added. I would suspect that the Gonzaga and UW games will be on FSN, and heck, maybe we can work our way into the championship game in the tourney up north and get on ESPN2 or something. Funny how a tourney run opens up the TV possibilities.

And now the waiting. It's a good thing football is just about here. :-)

our cross-city school is going to give us more trouble this time.

Agreed, but I think PSU is still the better squad. UP should certainly have a height advantage, but PSU will make up for that in toughness. Besides, PSU won't need to get offensive rebounds if all of Nelson's threes are hitting the bottom of the net.

I don't see it being too difficult if they prepare more for Sikma this time around. That said, if they don't, UP has a good shot, even at the Stott.

I hope I can go up to Waco to see PSU/Baylor play in December. Anybody thinking about making the trip? If so let me know maybe we can have a meet and greet.
