Next year I'm not drinking the Kool Aid

I'm just not going to do it. No matter how good the recruits look. No matter how much time our guys spend in the gym. No matter if one of our guys go and play with a national team. I am not going to drink it when someone tells me that we are bringing in a JC that will be the next Scotty B and a JC all American that will be the next Mook Otis. I am for sure going to pass on it when I see a key contributor that could have brought shooting and leadership leave the program before his senior year. I don't want to hear about the depth. We play 8 guys :blah:

I bought in this year hook line and sinker. The purple Kool-Aid turned out to be purple drain cleaner.

I was sure drinking the cool aid, from a fire hose. I was dispensing a little of it too.

I had really high expectations for this bunch and, in my opinion, they have way under performed. I really should have known better. We were starting 3 sophs and 2 jrs. We knew at least 1 or 2 true freshmen were going to see the floor. And, We knew that our lone senior was a work horse, but not a star. I should have tempered my enthusiasm with a little reality. I still have the expectation for them to continue to improve and compete for a BSC title. They may not win the title, but I expect them to be there at the end, competing for it. Anything less is a failure, in my opinion.

The nice thing about Conf. play starting up in a few weeks is that everyone gets to start over 0/0. What went on in the preseason is just window dressing at that point. The BSC is not going to get more than one team in the dance anyway. :coffee:

My expectations for this season weren't high having lost three starters, including the conference MVP. I thought there were going to be growing pains. Last season was more disappointing to me, even though we won the conference, because that team brought so much back. Last season's OOC was so frustrating.

Before we start slitting our wrist, the second season starts soon and we're not out of it! I'm thinking with the new line up and some maturation that we still have a chance. Still very bullish on next year! We are going to be in very good shape with almost everyone returning! The question is after 9 years, is Coach Rahe learning anything from this year? I'm not sure he's putting our best chance to win on the floor every night! :coffee:

I'm high on purple kool-aid!!!

Yikes...I should have know better losing four seniors from last years team, but I wasn't thinking clearly I guess. Our inside game has virtually been non-existent. We have been an extremely poor shooting team and terrible on the glass. Jeremy is establishing himself as a leader, which is great, but we need a lot more.

I for one really felt that Golden and Coston would have a far stronger affect on the program, but as of right now, that hasn't been the case. I think Coston, especially when a team is playing a zone, can do a lot of damage in the high post, but he has to make the easy shots in the lane. He missed four point blank floaters against the Y. Golden is a head case. He is trying to hard. He just needs to let the game come to him. He doesn't have to be the scoring leader, but we do need him to hit the open 3's.

Lastly, we need a lot more from Hunter, Richardson, and Hajek. Hajek will be getting a lot more mins. He will probably start getting between 15-25 a game. We will need, at least, 8 and 5 from Hajek to be successful. Also, Hill needs to give the Cats more. He turned it up in the second half against the Y, but we need him to rebound better. He is getting a lot better.

Utah Pirate said a while ago, that this years team is as much about this season, as next season. This team has potential and could really still surprise us.

One thing to keep in mind for next year is that 3 of our recruits will likely red shirt. Yes, it is a good class, and yes, they are talented. However, none of them are likely to win starters minutes as freshmen. One of them will be on a two year mission and won't play until 2017. My guess is that one of these freshmen will play a reserve role next year. Who that might be is a total mystery.

Before we start opening the cool aid packets for next year, keep in mind that this years team will be next years team, just a year older with our current red shirts added into the mix. Therefor, steadily getting better this year is hugely important for next year. :coffee:

Don't forget that we will need to free up a scholly for next year as well. I guarantee that we will still get to hear about the team needing time to gel and the new guys learning the system and that the season really starts in January. You have to remember that these two JC kids were touted as being the cats meow.

I'm convinced that JC kids are almost never the answer. Yes, you get lucky with one, now and then, but good ones are rare these days. Even if they are good, it takes them a year to get used to D1 ball and how to play defense. :coffee:

The purple kool aid better show its potential some time cuz as we speak the oral roberts team we needed a last second three to beat, is getting dismantled by an Oklahoma team we play next week. Drink up cuz that could get ugly fast!

Count me all in for the "Purple Stuff" for next year.

This year is a lot about growing into next. I was hesitant to climb on board the train this year, but several moves seem to indicate that we are definitely building for something big next year (and the year following).

Don't forget that Rahe's teams improve as the year goes on and are usually peaking late in the season. I'm anxious to see where he gets this team by year's end. If he gets them where I think he can, you can count me all in next year.

The "Lemon Lime" is pretty good. With Berry gone, the "Berry Calming" isn't quite as good.

So, next year, I'll probably be drinking the "Classic Grape" in big swigs!

I really feel you are on to something here.

Where can you buy that Purple Stuff? That would be great at coaches meetings and such. In fact, maybe a bunch of us could start meeting after games for a Purple Stuff at the victory spot (we would have to pick a spot). :thumb: :thumb:

It would help to get a victory or two so we can have a "victory" spot.

Now THAT is funny!!!!!

Ahhhhhh … that purple Kool-aid is so delicious and hard to resist. The problem is once you start drinking it you can't stop. And then you look like such a fool every time you say something because your tongue is purple.

There have been so many good posts recently about where our team is really at. Now that we are all back down to reality what can we expect for the rest of the year? My guess is that Rahe and crew will run with the recent lineup change as long as we see progress but that might also be short lived. I keep wondering if we can get any real chemistry going. You have to wonder what our record would be right now had we started with this line up from game one? Personally I think we would have at least two more wins and a lot more momentum going into conference.

I think the JC transfers were asked to do too much too soon, but I guess with our youth the coaches thought that might be best. They probably made commitments to them and that’s got to be tough to pull back on. I also think they stuck with the small line up and certain players too long. Perhaps they should have seen some of these shortcomings last summer? Also, at some point we need to develop the young guys. Shouldn’t that be now?

Great coaches turn players and teams into over achievers. Right now we are still seeing mediocrity and under achievement. I am anxious to see what comes next from the coaches. Can they get something from this group that we are not expecting? Or are we just going to see the same old thing the rest of the year? That is what I will be watching with great interest.

Understatement! I would have bet that you & 'talhadfoursteals' were selling it from a roadside stand last summer!

Tal is totally full of it most of the time. He doesn't know much, but he is a recruitaholic. He knows recruiting. alumniwsu, from what I remember, you were pretty much on board with everything they were saying. I know I was excited for this years team and I still am. I don't know why everyone is so quick to abandon ship? Its not like three starters graduated from last years team. Its not like over 50% of our offensive ability is gone from last year. You all saw that Golden was good in the exhibition games and thought he would do enough to make up for some of what we lost with Berry. Now we are turning on each other and our team. Pathetic

Nah, 'Purpleforlife' not really "abandoning ship" or "throwing in the towel" or "turning on each other"... just some in fun :poke: Yah, I somewhat bought into the early-on optimism, but as I've said, not a heavy drinker of the purple stuff, as some posters are. But as this thread's subject says, I'm learning to take it with a grain of salt now. Some of us just need to replace the unrealistic expectations with reality. Good that you're still excited about the team, as others. You all have a cold purple one, and get over the thin-skin reactions; enjoy the conference season & remember we all bleed purple. ;-)
