POSTGAME QUOTES
Men's basketball vs. New Mexico State -- Saturday, Nov. 12
NORTHERN COLORADO HEAD COACH B.J. HILL
On what cost Northern Colorado the game
"We turned it over a bunch, and it led to easy baskets for [New Mexico State] that we couldn't defend. We told our guys that coming into the game: that we can't guard bad shots, and we can't guard turnovers, and so we were going to have to limit those as much as we could. And we didn't do a very good job of that tonight when you look at the fact that we let [NMSU] get to the free-throw line 41 times, and we turned the ball over 20 times."
"We cannot turn the ball over 20 times in a game and expect to win, especially against a team as talented as New Mexico State. And a lot of those turnovers were doing things that we don't want done, doing things outside our offense, and hopefully they learned from that. They are talented kids with really bright futures ahead of them. We just have to grow up a lot on the floor in a hurry."
On his thoughts at halftime
"For us to be tied at halftime, I was really happy. I thought the zone was good for us. With the foul trouble it helped keep us in the game. We had some mind lapses in the last couple minutes of the first half or else I thought we even could have went in up four or five points. Then in the second half we let the pressure get to us and dictate both ends for us. [The pressure] took us out of what we wanted to do offensively and then our offense dictated our defense, which we can't do. That comes from immaturity and not understanding those things that upperclassmen do."
On the play of sophomore guards Paul Garnica and Tate Unruh
"They shot the ball well, but they can't turn it over six times between the two of them. That's too much.
On if he saw any players distinguish themselves tonight
"When you say that, everybody thinks offense, and I'm not worried about offense. I mean, again, we shot 48 percent from the field; we shot 40 percent from three. I'm not worried about offense with this team. We need guys to separate themselves defensively. We can't give up 89 points and let teams get to the free-throw line 41 times. That was the difference and what made us successful in the past, is that those teams understood the importance of guarding people and having a sense of urgency every possession defensively. This young team doesn't have that."
On correcting the defensive mistakes
"Guys have to go through growing pains on their own. A lot of guys trying to step into new roles for the first time, they've never had their performance dictate a game before, whereas in the past they could always hide behind those four seniors last year (Devon Beitzel, Chris Kaba, Neal Kingman, Taylor Montgomery). [If] they had a bad game, a bad practice, it didn't affect the outcome of the game usually. Now, it has a big outcome, and that's what they need to understand, and that growth takes time. Hopefully we start taking bigger steps—with this game and the upcoming games—hopefully we start taking bigger steps than what we have in practice."
NORTHERN COLORADO GUARD TATE UNRUH
On New Mexico State's defensive pressure
"They're an athletic team. We knew a little bit of that pressure was going to come, and we've been working on it all week. We just didn't take care of [the ball] like we can, and that was the difference in the game. I think we had, like, 20 turnovers--something like that. That's too many."
On the free throw discrepancy
"That was huge. One of our goals--we have a goal sheet as a team--and one of them is to make more free throws than the opponents shot, and I think they flipped that on us tonight."
On what made the difference in the second half
"Our problems come when we don't share [the ball]. [The coaches] just gave us a stat: we averaged, like, 1.7 passes per possession, and that's nowhere near where we need to be. So, us not sharing it and on the defensive end, we have a lot of work to do. Defense and rebounding, that's what we try and hang our hat on, and it just wasn't us tonight."
On Tuesday's game at Wyoming
"We'll see how we handle adversity, for sure. We're a young team, and we haven't faced any type of adversity or success, obviously, it being this early in the season. It'll be good for us--a good test to stay together. I love our chemistry so far, and it's going to be a good test to see how we do."
NORTHERN COLORADO GUARD PAUL GARNICA
On NMSU's full-court press
"They're pretty tall--they have some length on them--it wasn't too much pressure, just more a lack of focus on our part. That's what caused us to turn the ball over."
On dealing with defensive pressure going forward
"In practice just pressuring each other so we can get used to it and being strong with the ball."
On positives he can take into Tuesday's game against Wyoming
"If we don't turn the ball over and don't give them that many free throws, we're right in it with [New Mexico State]."
"We got our [loss], we're ready to come back and get a win at Wyoming."
