"WEBER STATE
OGDEN — When Weber State athletic director Jerry Bovee was a kid, his parents had season tickets to watch the Wildcats' basketball team. The Bovee family's seats were on the 27th row — because they were the closest available tickets to the floor.
That was in the late '70s and early '80s when Weber State was a hot ticket and the Dee Events Center was nearly full. The Wildcats had their best attendance during the 1979-80 season when an average of 9,868 fans showed up.
Tickets are much easier to come by these days. Weber State hasn't averaged more than 5,000 fans since the 2002-03 season.
"I think the problem for Weber State is the same as it is for everyone else," Bovee said. "There's more that we have to compete against."
WSU is a commuter school. Students are generally older and have jobs, and not many of them are going to paint their faces purple and attend games.
The Wildcats' student section is showing some improvement, though. Weber State had its worst season of attendance in 2007-08, bringing in an average of 3,577 fans. That improved by more than 1,000 last season, and some of that can be attributed to more students.
"Once we get a good student base to support us, we'll provide a better atmosphere for college basketball," Bovee said.
Attendance is up so far this season. The Wildcats averaged 4,854 fans in their first seven games of this season with a high of 9,272 turning out to see the team's upset win over Utah.
Building a consistent winner would no doubt bring larger crowds. When the Wildcats set their attendance record in the 1979-80 season, they were working on winning their third straight conference championship. In the 1978-79 season, WSU earned its first NCAA tournament win, beating New Mexico State as a No. 7 seed in what was a 40-team tourney.
The Wildcats had momentum following their postseason victory and put together a stellar 26-3 record in 1979-80.
It's a school-wide problem at Weber State. The football team has gone to the FCS playoffs two straight seasons but isn't setting any attendance records."
