The Fighting Hawks posted a nice win at home against EW, and came close against Idaho. A young team. Not a great 3 point shooting team, or a good foul shooting team. They do start a 7 footer (Shanks) at center (who is averaging less than 4 boards a game) and a 6-8 forward (Bernstine) who does look like a decent rebounder (almost 9 a game). Interested to see how Braxton and Bolomboy (and Hill) match up against them. Their best player is 6 foot jr, Quinton Hooker, who is averaging 18.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Only one other player averages in double figures, Crandall a 6-3 freshman.
Looking forward to two home games this weekend.

Weber should be a 14-15 point favorite. UND 10th in BSC in fg% ,last in ft% and 10th in assists per game. 1st in steals and rebounds....

Like ISU, these NoDaks seem to be improved over last years version. We seem to always match up well with them. I expect this year to be no different.

I've heard of dog fighting and cock fighting, but hawk fighting is all new to me. I have a lot of questions. What does a fighting hawk even look like? Do they use some sort of a strap on device? Do they actually fight, or just float around and look menacing? Do they eat at regular cafes or just stop for road kill? Are they easily distinguishable from prairie chickens?

I may get some answers Thursday night.

Weber 85 NoDak 75. :coffee:

Looks like much of the same that we saw on Saturday other than BJ has better bigs than Bill Evan's thug squad and also, the guard line is a little more consistent. Hooker is a heck of a player but that is about the only thing Sioux fans can get excited about. I like Crandell and think he will be one heck of a player in the future and BJ does a decent job of getting a lot out of his bigs. They might not be the most talented, but they do develop into pretty good bigs. I don't like the new mascot and will continue to refer to UND as the Fighting Sioux. LOOOOL This is very Sir Velo of me!

Just because you live in an area dominated by numbers, inanimate objects such as trees, and letters as mascots doesn't mean that the rest of the country suffers from the same issues. Stop hatin!

ill write a letter to the ncaa (aka barney fife of organziations) to get rid of them all.

back to the thread...

i dont think there is much to say. we have never lost to UND home or away. we expect a 10-15 pt win on Thurs. home big sky losses as always (50+ yrs), completely unacceptable.

I'm not disagreeing with you about how the NC2A is a crap organization run by TV contracts, P5 teams notoriety, croynism, and well...abject corruption but one of the best aspects about college sports is the mascot. I like being a Wildcat...now, if we would have made the Peacock a permanent fixture, I would understand your disdain for mascots.

Why does Sir Velo hate mascots? They're fun!!!! I'm proud to be a Wildcat and a Scot. [I graduated from Ben Lomand & Weber State.] Teaching over here in China, I have a lot of fun with telling my UK friends (two of whom are from Scotland) that I'm a Scot.

Although I may think differently if I was from the same school as my friend in Oregon. He graduated from Oregon State [the Beavers.] He always gets a red face when I ask him if he's ever dated Oregon State's Homecoming Queen -- "Miss Beaver."

Of course, the University of Oregon's mascot isn't much better -- the Ducks.

You guys always seem to match up well with us because we get outcoached by you guys everytime. We are going to have our hands full with Bolomboy. Shanks is a 7 footer but as you can tell by averaging under 4 boards a game he doesn't play much like one very often. Hopefully we can finally get a W against you guys but I don't see it happening. We have some talent at the guard positions but outside of Bernstine are bigs are not very impressive. At the end of the EWU game we played with a lineup of Hooker, Crandall, McDermott, Seales and Bernstine almost a GSW like small ball lineup but we don't hit threes like them haha.

Not necessarily true.. We have already had the discussion about Rahe and his coaching ability. I think our athletes have just been better each time and that is why we win.

There is one coach that is worse at making in game adjustments, it is Brian Jones. He is the worst coach in the big sky. He has gotten some decent talent to go to the frozen tundra. His teams lack discipline and direction. If there is one coach in this league that is Randys biotch, it is BJ.

With tinkle gone rahe blows away the rest of the sky.

fact is plenty of teams have less success in the BSC than Jones UND and Rahe Weber...but hey do not let the facts get in the way of your narrative

Well we got out coached against SUU not once but twice last year... Dont forget getting out coached against a UVU team that didnt even belong on the floor with us.

Fact is im surprised Tinkle stayed as long as he did. I watched his OSU beavers take apart the rival Ducks this week. They were just sound and played good basketball. And hate him as I do, he is a damn good coach.
There is a reason no one has come calling for Rahe.

Look I loved what Rahe has done with our program and the kids he has brought to Weber. He is a great guy but... I think he has reached his ceiling. I think we are greedy and all want more.

Scout,
Is coaching all about wins and losses? A good coach gets the most out of the talent that he has. A good coach typically has a team that buys in to the system and executes the plan. I sit behind the opposing teams bench and like to look at how the other coach operates. Jones has never looked like he has had much control over his team. To me, undisciplined teams shoot poorly from the foul line, at 61% ND is one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the nation. They also have a low assist rate at 48.3 ranked 267 in the nation. Plus he had the same stain on his suit coat all three days of the conference tournament last time it was here, didn't shave and easily could have passed as a homeless person.

really you just summarized what the entire fan board has been saying all season since the usu loss but mostly since the uvu loss.

i think the only remaining question to ask is...is the 400k in total benefits received too much or just the going rate for a good program? should we expect much much more? are we getting about what we should expect? comparing to other sky teams is not a good comparison unless other coach is schooling rahe but tinkle is no longer around. i dont know how to compare rahe's salary to other programs.

Free throw shooting has very little if anything to to with bench coaching some guys can make em others do not most players free throws at a pretty even clip throughout their career independent of whom their coach is....I have never heard of a coach who does not incorporate free throw shooting in practice. UND leads BSC in rebounding and steals but shoot poorly...Coaching is about wins and losses... as that is the clearest and most objective measure of coaching success. Some programs have higher standards of success than others...Montana and Weber are the Big Dogs in the BSC and they probably b pay their coaches the most and expect the most....Jones at UND is making south of 100k and may be the lowest paid D1 head coach...So Jones has been a bargain for the hockey school

One really positive thing that came out of the ISU game is that we are attacking zone defenses with much more efficiency. Another is that we were handling the full court press very well. ISU's coach is known for having one of the best zone defenses out there, so this is a very good development for us. Last year, at this point, a lot of us were complaining about our weaknesses in these areas. It looks to me like our coaches and the players have made the changes needed to counteract those strategies.

I don't know what strategies these NoDaks will try against us, but I feel a lot better about our ability to handle most anything thrown at us. We didn't have one of our better shooting nights against ISU, and yet we dominated their zone, maybe the best zone we will see.

I know that we were trying to take away the ISU transition game, and we did. However, I would like to see us get a few more offensive boards. I would also like to see us get out in transition a bit more, to keep other teams from going after offensive boards like they do against us. ISU was sending 3 guys to the offensive glass because they did not respect our ability in transition. We've got to get out faster and attack faster. :coffee:
